He reminds me of the teacher from Glee.

ROBOJEAN

I had a feeling before clicking it was going to be Arm Joe.

Best video game tie-in ever!

That shouldn't necessarily be the case. Hell it definitely shouldn't, we're electing them as political figures not models, and it's representative of an unhealthy campaigning system.

I mean for cultural reasons all your politicians look like hollywood villains, sure, but you could have them be like the UK and all look incredibly slimy and grotesque - in a sort of 2001AD way.

It kinda does... high risk is just that. A risk. This is a guaranteed bad end.

simmer down

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

AFAIK we say it for like "tucked into bed" or "tuck in your shirt." But maybe not for eating food?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Shit, I'm guilty of this. It's just so repetitive to say the same namse over and over again that you get self-conscious it sounds stupid.

BECAUSE HE CAN DO NO WRONG.

AND YES, THAT MEANS CYCLOPS AND TONY WERE WRONG.

If Spiderman and Captain America have the same thought, this thought is right and correct and beyond all questioning. And the only explanation you deserve for questioning it is a shield full of justice.

and generally speaking it's not the same people in both of those example posts you give that are commenting.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you mean in fandom or in the canon material? Because I really don't see it in the fandom. Most of the time he's treated as the "innocent little boyscout without a clue about the modern world".

PFFT I think Romney looks ridiculous with his Reed Richards dye job

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, *intense* -- as in his eyes make him look like a freaking serial killer.

But hey, to each their own, I personally prefer a person's inner beauty to their being a mysogonistic, Republican, walking, talking asshole.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I never said anything about whether it should or shouldn't be, simply that it is.

You'd end friendships over a ship? Holy shit you got problems.

N!S

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2012-10-13 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
N!S poster, was... this some sort of attempt to get political discussion going here... or did you just forget to finish your secret before you sent it?

Ugh, I know. "Use overwrought dialogue attributions instead of repeating yourself because repetition is THE WORST."

No. Please don't. It's terrible.

What boggles the mind is that any writing tips article worth its salt will advice you not to do this. Do people just avoid reading those?

Yay :) We have so many of these "I was inspired by this" but I always love seeing them.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I read a fic recently where a character in Chicago was idly watching QI reruns on TV. HEY FIC WRITER! We Americans who watch QI have to work to find our illegal pirated episodes, okay! Have some respect for our hardships. :P

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
For someone who could qualify as a senior citizen it's pretty damn good.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I vote we start using "Ameripick" the way "Britpick" is used. It's intensely aggravating to suddenly have British slang creep into American characters' speech when Brits get so uppity about the opposite. You'd think they'd take the time to find a beta.

Which is not to say that it's not intensely hard to write in another dialect. I've written longfic in BrE before and gotten told that I was raping the language after I'd spent months combing over it and had a beta. The beta just didn't do a good job, apparently.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes. This. I think it's okay if one uses the occupation of the character (like "the scientist" or "the spy"), but "brunette" and "blonde" for some reason completely freak me out. Well, I don't know, maybe I have some issued with hair colour. "Red", by the way, doesn't really annoy me.
And all those "blue-eyed", "the older man" and "the yonger girl" are disastrous.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Yep. It's what they're intense about that's the problem.

"Taking the piss" is another one I see British writers put in the mouths of American characters, and nothing could be more hilariously jarring.
