Re: re (most of) the rap threads from yesterday

"I didn't get that impression...? I don't think that people recommending white rappers means that they're dissing black ones. Rap has become a very large and varied genre over the past decade and it is filled with all kinds of people of all races that reaches many demographics. "

I think it mostly meant that people in the thread didn't know or listen to any black rap artists.

I think everything else you're saying is mostly true. Although there are really good female rap artists out there and I wish I knew more about them to recommend but I'll just throw out Azealia Banks. Also Big Freedia isn't really a rapper but I don't care everyone should listen to Big Freedia I mean seriously

this...outpouring of concern in this thread really bothers me on so many levels.

there are a lot of people out there in need. they are living hand to mouth, barely making ends meet, suffering from many hard and tragic events and afflictions. they talk on LJ or whatever blog about the hard time they have but because they aren't 'well known fanfic authors', they don't get near the outpouring of such deep concern.

so it appears that only if you're a personality in fandom are you worthy of notice for when you hit hard times.

stay classy, fandoms.

It must be because it's a bit late over here and I'm a bit dozy (also multitasking. and sarcastameter, lol that sounds great.

I completely agree to your first point! I'm a reasonably attractive lady but last fall I cross-played a character to the point that I didn't look remotely 'hot' anymore (wig, sunglasses, bulky vest-- unrecognizable as a woman from a distance). I was stoked about what I put together but I wasn't getting many picture requests despite having a stupidly accurate costume... but I found someone who did a genderbent version of the same character and we ended up taking a shitload of pictures together for novelty's sake. And I made a friend! We said hi to each other for the rest of the weekend, even though we didn't have complementary costumes for any other day.

Let's be honest, OP. It doesn't take much to make a SJW's head explode these days.

All I know is that there were a lot of hot guys and that sparked my brief shaved head kink.

In some cultures, insults are a way of revealing your sexual desire for another. Tell me how much I turn you on, anon.

(Okay, okay. That culture was a Star Trek race. Sorry.)

"It's not that it's just for black people, but that some things by black artists can be hard for white listeners to relate to because they don't have a similar experience."

I really don't agree with this, at all. I mean, I really, really think that, past a certain point, the things that rappers are talking about are basically universal human emotions. It comes from a different part of life in a lot of ways, but it goes to human themes.

I mean, we're talking about a board that's full of people who can relate to stories about people who can cast spells, about people and aliens flying around on spaceships, about people fighting vampires, about people fighting wars with sword and shield and horse, about all these completely alien things, and finding meaning in them and being able to relate to them. Are you really going to tell me that Notorious BIG is more alien than Spock and Worf? Are you really going to tell me that the world that Nas, or Scarface, or Jay-Z is talking about is more bizarre and difficult to relate to than Homestuck is? Are the things that rappers are talking about really that much more removed from our experience? I find it really difficult to believe that.

ayrt

Azealia Banks is brilliant :)

I haven't given Big Freedia a try, but I think I will now!

I agree that female rappers should get more of the spotlight. Rap is just such a male dominated genre (or at least men are the ones who the lion's share of attention). But I'm hopeful that more ladies will start breaking through in the coming years

That's the argument. It seems that if people use their lives as a TV show a la Kardashians (while yes, reality TV shows are very staged, so it's not really 'real life') that's enough to make RPS about them less creepy, since the characters in question have sort of made themselves into fictional characters, in a way.

And the other way around too, like, Sarah Jane had a pretty sweet relationship with Three, but she really clicked with Four because their personalities aligned just right.

I suppose my kneejerk reaction was because I see people say things like that seriously.

(like on deviantart. There is so much derp on deviantart I don't even. I swear one time I saw this girl who was all "I hate this celebrity she needs to die." and when people called her out she put up some ass saving edit 'I didn't mean she needed to DIE just that her career should end'. I was like "bitch either take accountability for what you're saying or shut up" )

I've been going to our annual zombie walk every year since 2006 and it's hit or miss whether I get my photo taken, but I definitely think the key with Zwalks is to go as some kind of 'character zombie', not just a random regular dead person. It doesn't have to be elaborate, but I've noticed that I've had friends pose for way more pictures when someone can refer to them as something. Like, "Hey did you see Bike Messenger Zombie?", or Pregnant Zombie in Onesie Pyjamas, Prom Queen Zombie or whatever.

Snerk. My immediate thought was, is OP fat? It sucks industrial strength, but that's the most likely reason why shallow people don't care how good their makeup and costumes are. Either that, or OP is wrong about how good their makeup and costumes are, and really they are terrible.

I wasn't sure what it was about this that was bothering me, but you just hit the nail on the head.

I'm sure someone will come along and try to defend it by saying that internet personalities with problems raises awareness for all the rest of the poor slobs who are suffering, but they don't really. All the concern goes to this person or that person who is having such a hard time. Their life is so hard, let's buy them a new laptop! They're in a rough spot, let's start a fandom auction to send them to Comicon! After all, this person in another city/state/country deserves it because they're poor but they write good.

Meanwhile, back in your own neighborhood.... but who gives a shit about them, what do they have to offer the fandom?

That's not what they're saying at all. They're saying gay men seem more likely to enjoy something girly like MLP.

I think it could be interesting to explore. You might be interested in an upcoming series - Do No Harm.

From wikipedia:
The series focuses on Dr. Jason Cole (Steven Pasquale), a successful neurosurgeon with a secret. Every night at 8:25pm, Cole is switched into an alternate personality named Ian Price. Cole has been able to hide Price by injecting a strong pharmaceutical mixture but due to recent events, that's no longer the case. Cole's alternate personality is focused only on creating obstacles for Cole to endure, which could cost him his life, romance and career. The series is a modern take on the classic Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde story.

It's set to premiere on January 31, 2013 on NBC.

3 and 4 same op?

seriously, it's the same graphic design in both, similar orz topics

I like to headcanon that sometime later on, the Doctor went to see Donna again and gave her a chance to decide for herself whether she wanted to die or forget. I know he said that "if she remembers for a minute, she'll burn" but in The End of Time she DID remember and she just did that energy-shooty thing and fainted, so I think there could possibly be a window of time that he could use to actually ask her...

I didn't really think the movie was advocating eugenics, just saying that maybe people shouldn't dismiss the pursuit of knowledge so much. In the United States anyway, there's a general antipathy towards learning in general

Warning for insufferability. I promised if I behaved in class I could brag here.

I am exhausted and my period finally showed up so I unthinkingly took a knockoff Midol on top of a Benadryl. Both of which make me drowsy. Thankfully the combination did not put me into a coma.

However it did make me forget that I had a six-thirty Electricity Principles class prior to my eight o'clock lab for that class. So I waltzed into the class at eight thinking I was on time. Oops.

I am the only girl in the class and the only one without any prior experience working with electricity and all the dudes are kind of dismissive towards me because of it. Last class I had to remind everyone repeatedly my name was not "sweetheart" or "the girl".

They picked on me for being late quite meanly actually. Well past friendly joshing. I ignored them.

Then we had to take a test on the material they covered before I arrived. It was multiple choice, open book, and pretty basic. We were allowed to work in groups but it seemed pretty straightforward and I was ignoring everyone so I did it myself (some of the answers were still on the board, ffs!). I breezed through it and then read some Lemony Snickett for twenty minutes waiting for everyone else to finish. I second guessed myself a couple of times but decided not to show weakness because I got some side-eyes for finishing quickly.

Towards the last ten minutes a guy asked for some help and the rest of the men ganged up to convince him not to listen to me because "She can't even read a clock, what do you expect her to know?"

Cut to the guy grading my work checking every single one of my answers off as correct as the teacher went through them. I did not make eye contact with anyone else in the class. I did not say "So there motherfuckers," or even make a slight sassy face. I just calmly collected my test after it was graded, wished everyone a good night and left the class. Like a boss.

Does it count as being the bigger person if I did it to feel even more superior and smug?
