People really just need to get over the fact that some people hate-watch, I get that some people dislike negativity in fandom but whining about it won't really stop it.

I really just can't stand the attitude of "there can't be criticism about this show I love, EVER!" Like if you want to have happy fan times, fine, stay out of episode reviews then because you know things will not always be happy. Even when I still like a show sometimes I like deconstructing it and hearing about what people may not have liked.

And in regards to hate-watching for myself, sometimes I do it because I'm waiting for the show to turn around or in some series yes I really do want to see how it ends (god damnit introduce the Mother already HIMYM...)

This sums up my attitude on the matter precisely.

While I mostly agree with this, there are people that take it way too far on either side of the issue. You've got the people who can't take any criticism of the property and will try to shout down anyone that tries to rain on their parade, but you've also got the people that are hell-bent on dragging as many other people into hating their target as they can. It gets annoying when your discussing something like a specific episode or chapter and someone constantly buts in with, "That sucks, but then again the whole show has sucked since season 4 started" and then proceeds to derail the whole conversation while deriding anyone that expresses anything except absolute loathing for the property being discussed.

Of course, the criticism in the secret itself is valid as there's no reason a person should have to leave or stop watching something just because they think it's gone downhill. On the other hand, at some point even the more reasonable fans are going to get sick of your diatribes if your posting them outside of the actual discussions on show quality.

After awhile it starts to come off like you just want to shout your opinion at people rather than have an actual conversation, and that is every bit as annoying as the people who tell you to just stop watching at the slightest sign of criticism

That's true and I don't disagree with any of this post, BUT on the other hand, people who live only to complain are INCREDIBLY FUCKING ANNOYING. I have this one friend who watches things JUST so he can complain about them, and it drives me up a fucking wall.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
This. There are shows I've stopped watching even after several seasons, but generally when you watch something for a long time, you are invested in it. You want to know what happens to the characters. You often have some hope that the show might get better again. Even when you don't have hope, you're morbidly curious how the character assassination and the terrible plots will continue.

And it pisses me off even more when people say "just stop watching" when you only criticize one aspect of the show. Most shows don't turn from amazing to shit in one episode. Often you hate some things, but you still love others. I have shows I only watch for one character anymore.

Yep, that's exactly it.

And most shows DO have shit episodes or scenes (hell, even seasons!); I don't see anything wrong with discussing your feelings on the material. (That's what fandom is for!) No one has to agree.

Though TBH, after a certain point I just don't care to discuss specific episodes anymore. (Usually when I start disliking something, or my interest starts waning.)

Word on the, "I'm still watching X because I watched it a long time and liked it..." part. As an example, I've been a fan of Doctor Who longer than some of you have been alive (the early 80's, fwiw), but I'm supposed to stop watching because it's had a bad season or so (I thought season 5 was good)? Uh... no.

OTOH, yeah, after about half a season of Revolution, I decided I wasn't interested so I stopped watching. It's easy to cut a show free after a few episodes, but when you've invested years (or even decades) into a show, and you've thought a lot of that was genuinely good, it's harder to just go, "Fuck this show" and quit watching.

The only show I've done that with was House. Cause seriously, season 6 and 7 and a good chunk of 8 was bad. Like really bad. I only picked up the last 4-6 episodes of the entire series just so I could see how it ended, but it'll a LOOOOONG time before I ever actually finish the show, despite having seen all of season 1-5.

Every other show, I just kind of drift from and drift back to, depending, or I stick with, despite going down hill.

People who hate-watch are simply annoying. It's one thing to watch a show and complain about a certain episode's plot line or a the way a character is going. It's another thing to be 100% venomous about everything and rant over and over again about the same damn things. You want to hate-watch. Rock on. You want to whine about the same thing week in and week out and especially, insult the fans who watch the show because they like the show simply for the reason that they do like the show, go away. Or better yet, start a hate-watch community board, site, blog, whatever so that people who are still fans know which places to avoid.

Now that I think about it, there isn't a single show that I love unconditionally. They all have something that irks me, whether writing, acting or bad special effects, but I'm not going to stop watching or criticizing them just because I think that there's something they could do better. Loving something doesn't mean that you'd have to blind to its faults.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes.

Not only do I have faith that something I love will be able to recapture what made me love it (one show I stuck in the fandom for during a season I thought was okay and then one I thought was abysmal is now lovely again, and I'm so glad I've been proven right), I don't see why I should stop posting/reading fanworks set in season "3" just because it's now season "6", because I adored season 3 and I dislike season 6.

Hypothetical numbers are hypothetical. I don't have a particular show in mind.

The difference is, do you watch it solely to put down people who still like it? People who do that are the ones who piss me off. Fine, you're invested in seeing it through the end. Great. However, please don't belittle me when I enjoy an aspect of it that you hate. YKINMK, except not kinks. Well... in a non-sexual way, maybe? Is that a thing?

Though really, if people watch things that piss them off just to watch them, I have to wonder if there aren't better, and less stressful/aggravating, ways to spend your time... Like, can't you skip a few weeks and then marathon-hate?

As long as you stay the hell out of MY journal I don't care what you do - you can rant all you want in your own journal or on other communities. But the minute you come into one of my posts just to rant about how much the show sucks and you hate everything about it that's when I think you're an obnoxious asshole and need to get the fuck out.

This is literally the problem ruining soap opera discussions on Twitter. Folks who hate watch the shows busting into someone else's conversation to rant about how much it sucks and how stupid you are for liking it. ESPECIALLY General Hospital. Like, yes, the show isn't perfect, but let people enjoy it and stop harassing the writers/actors/fans who do like it.

If I'm going to be negative about something I tend to do it in my own journal or in a comm like this where people discuss all sorts of aspects of various fandoms. I don't go jump in my friends' journals and start trying to harsh their squee. Sometimes if I come across a post that invites a critique of the source material, I will chime in with negative comments, but never of the "how can you like this dreck, you idiot!" variety.

I come across this a lot on my friends' list because much of my flist is still loving SPN, and I am finding it unbearably ridiculous and sad. I've posted episode reviews to my own journal, but I haven't gone into my friends' squeeful review posts and stomped all over the parade. At least, I hope I haven't. :( In general, I just don't comment at all (made even easier by not having watched any of the eps since hiatus ended). I'm glad my friends can still find something to love about the show and frankly a bit envious since I spent solidly happy years with it. I wish I could get that feeling back.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I think if there was some way for the two extremes ("people who like this are idiots" and "people who don't like this are idiots") to completely avoid each other, you'd get a lot less people telling each other what to do. That said, this will never happen and there are people who either get defensive over everything or enjoy the way they can piss others off way too much. Oh, internet.

This is how I am with Big Bang Theory.

LOVED LOVED LOVED the first 3 season, but ever since then, it's been shit and I hate Amy and Leonard and all the misogyny and stuff....but it's now become a train wreck of a show that I can't stop watching. Even if there ARE some genuinely funny or touching scenes at times.

I AM TO FINISH IT, EVEN IF I ABSOLUTELY HATE THE DIRECTION IT'S GOING/GONE.

While no one can stop you from hate-watching, if you go to a fanspace of something just to rant on about how much you hate what they like, you need to understand that you aren't going to be popular. No one's going to be interested in what you have to say, and people are, yes, going to wonder why you're such a damn masochist. Think about a friend/acquaintance of yours that complains a lot in real life. After a while it gets really annoying, and you're like "God, so stop interacting with whatever it is you hate so much, and shut the fuck up already."

TL;DR - it's not your hate-watching that's annoying your friend, so much as the constant bitching, and "well why do you still watch it" is their way of trying to delicately hint at "please stop watching it so you'll finally shut the fuck up."

Look. I don't police hate-watching. I don't police hate-tagging on Tumblr and I think the people in my fandoms who attack anyone who 'tags hate' are assholes. (I think fandoms that are overrun with tagged hate should make a squee-specific tag like the Elementary fandom did, it's a good way to keep the peace without stepping on anyone else's toes)

But I do request courtesy in my personal journal and in one on one conversations. A while ago I had a fandom friend and we had a few mutual interests, but she couldn't resist extremely vitriolic bashing of a character I liked every time they were mentioned. It was like an auto-reflex---someone anywhere on the internet mentions this character, she has to come and call the character a useless bitch and insult their fans. I was censoring my fandom posts to remove all mention of the hated character to avoid another fight before I finally called my friend on it.

tldr: Cool, just don't be the police on the opposite end, telling people what they are and aren't allowed to like.

Yeah, sometimes there's something good and bad about the show. And you stick around for the good things but the bad things make you face palm as you watch it. Then you just have to get the frustration out on someone who will listen.

I watch Pretty Little Liars. I want to know what they'll do with this A plot, it's got an interesting setup. But oh my god is it stupid. And yet, that's part of the enjoyably for me. Fortunately, I'm a part of ONTDPLL which seems to have the same mindset as me. So I don't have to rain on the parade of someone who genuinely thinks Erza and Aria are soulmates.

I think it's interesting how many people are in this thread desperately trying to defend their right to behave like an asshole. If you find yourself saying people should just put up with your never ending bile in a place that they go to have fun and enjoy themselves then you really need to ask yourself what you are hoping to accomplish with it. Why are you so determined to piss on someone else's parade?

Hahah I feel you. While I usually just quit when I show starts to slide into the gutter (see: House, SPN, Homeland, Prison Break, Heroes, Lost) sometimes I'm just invested enough in the plot or premise of the characters that I ride it out anyway, even though the whole show has become a big bag of shit (see: BSG after the first 1.5 seasons). And yes, I will write about how shitty that shit is.

...And yes, apparently, the people who are still enjoying will jump on me for calling it a bag of shit. It's the great Internet Circle of Life.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really get hate-watching something. If it's at the point where I'm hating the show, I break it off in favor of finding something I do enjoy to watch. There's so many options out there and so little time to watch that I just don't get hate watching something. I'd think it might be a better use of time to watch/do something you enjoy, instead of getting hating and getting pissed off at something you no longer enjoy. For me, it just stresses me out and ruins my mood.

Me and Ɉʔɀɬing comics

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
This is how I have been with comics.

I stuck with superhero comics for a long freaking time and still look in on them. I had to fight really hard to let those characters go.

There's one webcomic I loved for years that makes me angry now, and I can see the artist's flaws, and it's important to me!

And then I noticed I'm making the same mistakes in my own work that drove me up the wall in those works, so complaining about those mistakes helps me try to stop repeating them.
