Meh, TV fantasy isn't reality - everyone's got a few fictional characters they'd switch teams for. If it's that hard for you to come out to family, stop stressing it, and wait until you actually start dating someone that makes your "bi-ness" obvious. That way you don't have to have the TV discussion at all - just be like "well, I really like this person and I'm dating them, so I guess I'm bi."

What are you trying to unlearn?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-10 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Cheers, I finally have somebody I can ask about this!

How do you imagine this dynamics in canon setting? I mean, it is a super homophobic environment, and they themselves are likely to be absolutely terrified by the very thought of non-platonic relationship.

There are so many things wrong with this (mentor-student situation, age difference, Marty being underage in the beginning (?), same-sex relationship being illegal) that the only reaction I can expect from Doc is to curl up in a very dark corner and die.

Not aggressive, just curious. I've always wanted to encounter a person who ships such a pairing in a "realistic" manner, probably because the only ship present in my fandom is of the same kind, and the only story that exists for it has the couple being happy and all that, which weirds me out to no end, since I know the historical context quite well.

ASOIAF maybe overestimated SPOILERS

I don't mean in terms of quality, but lately I've been feeling like people think GRRM subverts fantasy tropes a lot more than he does. Yeah, there's a lot of rape, murder, incest, etc present in his world, but I don't know, I've never honestly felt surprised that a major character died. It always felt like he was obviously leading up to it, or sacrificed characters whose death made sense.

I only feel there are two characters that are meant for the end game: Dany and Jon. They're the two that get away with the most stuff, have the most disproportionate power building, etc.

It's just that I'm always hearing fans go "OMG GRRM kills ~everyone~ you love!" and I feel like I'm taking crazy pills since it seems so obvious who he was trying to kill. How could I ever be surprised Joffrey died? He had almost no relevance that couldn't be filled by another character. Renly looked like meat the second he declared himself king.

I'll admit I'm surprised by plot turns and whatnot

Well, I think if writers want their female characters to have a baby together, there are still some realistic ways to pull it off without having to venture into complete Suspension of Disbelief areas. It's not quite the same with male characters. Also, there's that weird feminization thing that a lot of yaoi fans are into, so that might also be part of it.

I assume the poster means this:

I personally don't think it's interesting enough to hate it. It's just a bit of fluff really. Hats off to those that participate and enjoy it. It's harmless.

body horror/transformation, humiliation kink, feminization kink ?? And then you can apply hurt/comfort and domestic/family fluff on top of that.

Mpreg is not usually my kink, but I think maybe I have a neighborly sort of relationship with it...

I don't think discovering your sexuality because of a TV show is weird. It was Katie Cassidy's portrayal of Ruby on Supernatural that made me realize I'm bisexual (or rather, allowed me to come to terms with it). I mean, that's the thing about TV shows. They're not always *just* TV shows. Sometimes they mean more. There's nothing wrong with that.

What, Americans are supposed to boggle about that? New England has like twenty different accents!

I followed it a bit last year. Some of it was hilarious, and there were some amazing gifs and really clever campaigns. But a lot of it just got really unkind. I love the competitive stanning side, but I don't understand how anyone can enjoy actively trying to make other people angry like that.

Well, Awakening IS my first Fire Emblem game and I'm rather enjoying the plot and the characters. Although everyone's crush on Chrom is very, very silly.

(And I feel no regret for taking Olivia and Virion to S-level after meeting her child)

LOL

then... don't participate and ignore it?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-10 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
For those who don't know what it is:

http://f-march-madness.livejournal.com/

Basically, characters from various fandoms are paired up against each other, and fans vote for who they want to win. The rounds keep going until there's only one winner left. Last year, Leslie Knopes won.

I'd be really curious if everything was really, totally fine before this happened. In my experience, falling into a fandom vortex usually happens when I'm already unhappy or scared. But god do I know how you feel. I thought about asking for help too.

A+. Would lol again.

LOL well it is called 'Fandom Steel Cage Match March Madness' for a reason tbh.

But yeah, I get what you mean.

I think part of it stems from the archaic (but surviving) 'man planting his seed' thing that surrounds pregnancy in general. Cis-women have no seed to plant, as it were. I think the other part is that cis-women are biologically the child-bearers so there's generally a lot more mindfuckery involved in a cis-man coming to terms with bearing a child. While there are a lot of deliciously angsty places one could go with a cis-woman who accidentally gets pregnant and absolutely in no way ever wanted to have a child (one could even go so far as to having her have a pregnancy phobia), I think the whole 'I should not be biologically capable of doing this!' angst from mpreg is what pushes a lot of people's buttons.

Of course the 'verses where they're like 'yea (cis-)men have babies here all the time. That's just the natural thing!' hold very little interest for me for that exact reason. (i.e no mindfuckery)

I feel like fandom is largely about wish fulfillment (which is not a bad thing; that was actually a major part of the reason why I entered it in the first place), and, although self-insert is usually less welcome (since it is very personal and normally does not bring pleasure to other fans), I don't think it should be kept secret.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-10 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It really is. It is so much fun. Even if you're not even running and just using it as an audiobook, it's still entertaining. (Though you should probably run.

You said it better than me.

Then you have a city like Boston, where my cousins say you can tell which street someone grew up in by their accent.

This happens all over. Even in smaller towns and cities.

I grew up in Virginia Beach. We have a strong Mid-Atlantic accent, think The Wire, that would never be mistaken as Southern. But you go to the the next town over, Chesapeake, and lo and behold, there is the missing Southern Virginia accent. And you go to the next town over, past that and it becomes even thicker.
