cooking thread

(Anonymous) 2014-02-13 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
What was the last thing you made/baked/cook from scratch? How did it turn out?

Do you have a specialty dish that you are famous for? What is it?

Last but not least, what's one food/beverage item that you haven't tried but would love to for whatever reason (money, availability, etc.)

Salisbury steaks with red gravy and mashed potatoes and peas. It was delicious.

I have a reputation for baking, cakes and pies especially. In particular, my carrot cake gets requested a lot.

I made Spanish inspiredish meatballs out of minced meat, filled with some herbs, garlic and Feta Cheese yesterday, I haven't eaten since lunch today and so that was the last meal I made, and as I don't really buy a lot of preprepared food so most of what I make is from scratch.

It was surprisingly good, I never put cheese in it before so that was new, but it worked, which was a great thing because the day before I made chicken and I put way too much spices on it so I had to take of the skin and fry it without it and add some other stuff to make it edible.

I am known for my cheese cake with berries oh and I am good with doughs, or whatever you call it in English, the word for bread/Buns/pizza bottoms and such as one thing.

And I really can't think of anything I would want to try that I haven't, there are probably loads, most of it is in the fruits/vegetables area of food, and also pastries of any kind.

I have already tasted pretty much anything edible from the sea, including whale*, also when it comes to meat I have eaten pretty much anything I would want to eat that comes from an animal, there is probably some kind of bird I would like to taste at some point. Which reminds me reindeer meat is quite tasty and people should really try that at some point in their life!

*I am Norwegian and not endangered whale

Roasted chicken and vegetables with thyme butter. Super easy, but really delicious. I made it for my sister, her bf, and roommates because they almost always cook something amazing when I visit so I wanted to cook for them. And it was a success as always.

My specialty dish is probably Moroccan rice with spice-rubbed portobello mushrooms. It's a little time-consuming in the prep department, but fairly simple to make. It's my go-to vegetarian party dish.

I think the last thing I made was apple turnovers.

I am known for cookies and muffins, particularly a super chocolatey cookie.

I would like to try really good English toffee but I haven't gotten my hands on any yet.

I hadn't baked anything from christmas, but I apparently do a passable strudel(both sweet and salty).

However, last thing I cooked was a tenderloin with sauce and millet(unsure about proper translation).

Chicken marinated in mustard, vinegar, olive oil, and various spices, backed for about 45 minutes and served with pasta shells drowned in alfredo sauce.

I made perlo. Which is a chicken, rice, kielbasa, and peas...thing. It is delicious.

I have no specialty dishes (does hot dogs and mac&cheese from a box count?).

I want to try a souffle. Especially chocolate. It is on my bucket list.

I cook from scratch most days but the first new thing I tried was this: http://joythebaker.com/2011/03/cinnamon-sugar-pull-apart-bread/ and it was YUMMY even if i do so so myself.

I just made carbonara spaghetti because I'm boring like that

Also I can make some bitchin' crêpes a Breton would be jealous of

It might sound stupid but I really want to try sloppy joes because it sounds delicious

Soup. Sweet potato and white bean. It was fantastic. Beans make a blended soup so silky and smooth that I use them instead of dairy now.

Soup. I make a lot of soup and it always turns out well. However, the one thing people ask me to teach them to make is risotto.

I've tried a lot of things, so it would have to be pretty rare. Maybe a super-old scotch.

I made taco spaghetti for dinner!

It's plain old spaghetti that's been boiled for half of its cooking time in taco seasoning. I add black beans, corn, diced tomatoes, and onion to it, typically, although I'd really like to add ground beef or a little bit of sour cream once I can afford it regularly!

My specialty dishes are Gram's meatloaf and my husband's macaroni! I made it on Monday night for my landlord.

I'd like to try Turkish delight, because I've wanted to ever since I was a kid reading the Narnia books. I have no idea what it's even supposed to be like but I want to try it. As long as it isn't infused with bad magic.

Last thing I made was a lemon cake with chocolate buttercream frosting. Ended up being a little crumbly in the middle because one of my cake pans is old and sucky and I had trouble getting that layer out, but that issue was neatly fixed by adding yet more frosting.

I don't know if I'd say it's my specialty, but I've gotten a lot of compliments on my triple chocolate mousse cake.

I made curry last night. Curry is actually one of my specialties, too! This isn't what I did last night, but my personal way of making curry is by kind of combining the Indian and Thai styles. Like, I'll make the sauce with Thai curry paste and coconut milk, but I'll also add chickpeas, spinach, and a can of diced tomatoes, and I season the meat with a few different curry powders while it cooks. I think it comes out nicely! :)

I'm a decent baker, too. The last thing I made was thumbprint cookies.

Last thing I made from scratch was a five-spice beef stirfry, and after making it a dozen times I think I'm finally starting to get the hang of caramelizing the beef. I was going to do sage and apple pork chops tonight, but there were Circumstances so I'm making them tomorrow.

I'm family-famous for my baking. I do baked goods baskets every Christmas instead of buying gifts, and everyone looks forward to them and half the stuff gets eaten before it ever makes it home.

I have not yet tried goat. I know where to buy it locally, but not how to cook it, and it's only available in large quantities. The rest of my household has already said that they will not even consider eating it.

I frequently cook and bake things. I have a reputation for bread, these days.

Last thing I made was tofu stirfry. The night before that it was pizza (Hawaiian) from scratch.

As it turns out, vegetarian ham tastes pretty much like ham from a pig.

1. I made scrambled eggs this morning. They were good, but I got distracted and almost forgot to eat them, so they got cold whoops.

2. I make a vegetarian "stuffing" for Thanksgiving each year. My family really likes it (as do I). :3

3. lots of things tbh. uh. well, one thing that comes to mind is venison. I don't eat any red meat - haven't for, uh, like four years - but if someone offered me venison I would try one bite just to see what it tastes like, because I have never had it and been curious for a while.

I am known for my peanut sauce noodles, soup, and baking. People always really enjoy my baking.

I make good burgers, mini-omelettes, and noodles, and that's about it.

I can't cook anything else. I can't even make regular-sized omelettes. When my boyfriend cooks, I'm basically not allowed near the stove. In their defense, I have actually managed to mess up a bowl of milk and cereal (twice!) and burned boiling pasta. In my defense, I was either jury-rigging something due to missing ingredients/components or I was heavily distracted.

I just made sugar cookie dough tonight (I'll bake them tomorrow) and they are definitely my specialty, I probably make them at least once a month.

I'm known for my baking, particularly scones and brownies, but I do almost every kind of sweet treat - sauces, butters, breads, cakes, bars, cookies, pies, cream puffs, granola, mousses, doughnuts, candy, cheesecakes, etc.

I can't think of anything that I want to try at the moment

I just finished making shepard's pie (ok, the corn came from a can, but the ears were more expensive!). It's the best I've made yet!

I make great peppermint bark.

I still haven't tried the avocado milkshakes so popular in the pho places around town. Just... weird, man.

I made Onion Soup this Wednesday! It was damn tasty, but eating it was sad, because I'm home alone and eating by myself it's just not the same. (I used to be fine when I lived alone! But after being back in 2010 I get lonely 0_0 What happened?)

- - -

I don't think I have an "specialty" right now, because I'm always trying to learn something new, but a friend of mine recently made my recipe of pasta with cabernet/funghi sauce and her family loved it. I felt so proud u//u

Nothing comes to mind in the "stuff you haven't tried yet", sorry :( It's late here, ok.

We cook most of our meals from scratch. This week we made shrimp curry over rice; miso glazed green beans with grilled steak and roasted cauliflower (which is so awesome; cauliflower is so underrated); and matzo ball soup made with homemade chicken stock.

My specialty dish is French onion soup. It is better than the French onion soups I ate in France while studying abroad. My husband makes an amazing dal.

I have never tried ramps. I go to all the farmers markets and try to find the ramps but I never do. *cry cry*
