Non-Fandom rants

[personal profile] philstar22 2014-04-24 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Another thread. Because I need to rant about group projects. I hate them. Especially when the other people don't do their own share. But even if they do, I always feel like i have ideas for the way I want this to go and I end up wanting to do all the work. I guess I can see the point of them, but they are still annoying. Especially when that's the only assignment in a class.

I feel you. I hate them because I feel more comfortable doing my own work, and it's a total lottery whether you'll get good group members (which is awesome) or terrible ones (which is terrible).

It's also unfair. Yes, we get that in the real world we'll have to do work with others. But that doesn't make it ok to make part of one person's grade ride on the work of others.

My rant: my herpetology professor refused to push back the due date of the term paper, even though he did push the date of the second lecture exam to the same day. I knew I wouldn't be able to do well on both, and I ended up turning in a mediocre paper, even though I REALLY need to bring up my grade in this class. Well he told us that he hasn't had time to start grading them yet because he's so busy with the test. REALLY? You're going to penalize us for not turning it in at the same time as the test and then let us all know you won't start grading it for a week? And not even being a little bit ashamed when telling us? >:/

"i have ideas for the way I want this to go and I end up wanting to do all the work."
you may already know this, but that's the whole point of group projects - to help people like you learn how to work better with others

As Diet_poison said, though, it isn't fair to have one person's grade riding on another person's. Its my grade, so I want to do the work necessary to get a good grade. Its not really the same as a real world situation. I'm just fine on group assignments at work. But school is different.

It teaches people like philstar how to work with others, yes. But it teaches people who fail to contribute that they can get away with letting others do their work for them.

I hate group projects. I resent immensely being stuck with people who don't care and routinely get grades a full letter or two lower than mine. I have no desire to pull their weight for them. They're going to be my competitors in the job market someday, and I'd rather they work for every grade they get, same as I do.

Grades aren't the largest criteria in hiring. Being in the right place at the right time to meet the right person is sometimes far more important. And you're missing the point of those assignments.

It sucks, but better get used to it. Learn how to work with people you don't like, learn how to get them involved (without being an asshole), learn how to communicate issues diplomatically <- these are all going to be valuable skills in a lot of jobs. Learning teamwork is important and if you can handle it right (get him involved, be a team player) you can use this situation in future interviews as a "time you overcame adversary" and basically any teamwork related question ever.
(Also good management material is involving everyone and working this stuff out diplomatically - not taking over and doing all the work.)

/currently working with a good team in my job and one really uncommunicative, demanding person who has us all really baffled on how to tell him this is NOT a competition, this is a JOB and to complete the job we actually do need to work together and find ways to use each others skills. There's no grades, there's no competition. We are a team and we need to work as one.

I hate that too.

Is there any way you can be assigned to a new group? I requested that once, and it worked out. I think once or twice I was also allowed to submit something on the side.

There IS truth in the fact that you have to put up with that shit at work, as teachers often tell you - but that's not really the point, is it? The point is that it sucks now. :/

Nope. We picked based on topics (love the topic we're doing, so there's that), and its due in only a couple of weeks. I'll get through it. I just did like 2/3 of the research and then the other two decided they wanted to divide our project by topics in a different way which just happened to mean that I'm now sending them what I've already done and doing a whole bunch of new research. I just wanted to rant.

I feel you. For the most part, I hated group projects in college. I hated feeling like, no matter how much work I myself put in, I would be judged according to the work of others. There was one project I completed where the professor promised to judge us individually, and despite the fact that my partner flaked and didn't do a damn thing, it was still my favorite of all the projects I did, simply because I knew I'd be recognized.

There's this notion that these projects are supposed to correspond to the working world (and some people are responding to this post in kind), but in my experience, they really don't. In the working world, there are real stakes, and supervisors notice when a particular team member isn't pulling her/his weight. It's a very different set of circumstances, and I'm not sure that a college course can duplicate them.

I hate that I can't ever have political discussions on the internet, because there is no such thing as good-faith disagreement anywhere. I want to discuss the flaws in Republican ideas, not rant about how they're simultaneously evil and brainless. They're people just like you and me and they are allowed to be wrong without it meaning they want to ruin everyone's lives. There was a thread on here the other day about how they must all have mental disorders, ffs.

Shut, the fuck, up.

Jesus Christ, this is the most obnoxious tired argument from dictionary pedantics. And it's almost invariably by oppressed groups to dimiss an article or something getting pulled down because they're against it, without thinking of the broader implications.

I just found out the brand of headphones I have been buying for 7 years has been discontinued. JVC Marshmallow Earbuds. So now I have no idea what to do.

Man I hate cooking.

But I also hate how expensive instant foods are.

Aww man you want a group project rant?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
So it was a semester-long project in Technical Writing class that you had to have a partner for...I did a lot of the work the whole time, but you know, whatever. THEN. On the final class day, when we had to do our presentations and turn in our final project (in our case a brochure + essay + cover-letter type thing) she didn't show until class was almost over. When we had signed up to be the first people to present! AND she was the one who was supposed to do+bring the powerpoint! So I did it by myself, with no powerpoint (I drew shit on the board from memory). Then when she came with her part of the final project (the brochure) it was clearly and shoddily printed at the last moment. I snuck it out of the envelope and replaced it with an earlier draft I'd done.

Fortunately my teacher knew she sucked so I got a good grade and I think she's the only one that was marked down. But still, group projects will always suck.

Re: Non-Fandom rants

(Anonymous) 2014-04-25 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Not really a rant, but I find it hard to balance between being myself and making people think I'm overwhelmingly chatty and weird, and being quiet and making people think I'm antisocial and weird. I'm getting better, but it's still hard to be entirely myself. It doesn't help that I feel people I know give me mixed messages. One minute it's "be yourself!" But the next it's "maybe you shouldn't make random Star Wars jokes, though." That's who I am, though. Yeah, you have to make sure you act appropriate in given situations, but at some point you're either too you or not you enough, and I have no idea where that middle ground is.

One of my friends has yesterday, today, and tomorrow off work and I do as well (though I have to work this weekend and she does not) and I was looking forward to going to the aquarium with her today but at the last minute my dad asked me to go to the DMV with him to resolve an issue. ='( So I couldn't go. And I might not see her tomorrow either because I have to take my younger brother to his doctor's appointment. I miss my friends. ='(

I also hate my boss. He's really into micromanaging the fuck out of our department and makes up rules as he wishes and he never follows said rules. But on the bright side he transferred this chick from another department who everyone knew was crushing on him and on a night they and a couple other coworkers went out drinking she got in his car and refused to get out until he threatened the cops on her. EVERYONE heard about it and began gossiping that he was dating said new employee. He seemed rather regretful of being the topic of interest for the week. I sat back and watched the drama unfold (though the lady tried to get me involved but I quickly withdrew myself from the situation).

It pisses me off that someone in my household with a degenerative neurological condition is basically sitting on their ass waiting to die instead of fighting. They're not that old, there are methods they can take to slow its progress, but they want to sit and complain and expect to be felt sorry for instead.

I'm not in with that bullshit at all. I used to respect this person a lot until they became a total quitter because "life is too hard."

Btw their mental faculties are fully intact. It's a physical issue, not mental.

Re: Non-Fandom rants

I was a lazy ass, but the few instances I really did work my hardest was in group projects, because I didn't want to be that person everyone hated for dragging the group down. I actually managed to still be somewhat lazy, because I always volunteered to put the presentation together (and I made very good ones) because that way, I could get away with doing my stuff last. It really sucked not getting the material for the slides, though. One guy gave me his notes in class the day before the presentation - handwritten on ripped out notebook paper and I had a really hard time reading it. And I don't know how often I got other people's material the evening/night before the presentation (as in 11 pm and later).
