I'm pretty sick of the fighting myself and need the hiatus to be over because it's getting to be annoying. And at this point, I'm rooting for the redemption arc for a variety of reasons (I want to see Ward heal from the thirty straight years of abuse he's suffered and to find out the person he can be without John Garrett's influence in his life) but I also want to see the haters seethe when it happens because they're so against it.

Why would anyone think the fans would like this?

A bad guy can be likable, but a Nazi's kindaaaa difficult to pull back from…

Not really. Hydra's kind of like the worse-than-nazis that Marvel came up with to keep from appropriating reality or going Godwin.

It's a little more complicated than that - Ward was abused by his parents and brother growing up. He finally snapped for some unknown reason and tried to burn down the house with his brother in it.

SHIELD agent turned Hydra traitor proceeded to kidnap said sixteen year old from juvie (he agreed but still a minor), abandoned him in the woods with only a dog for five years, killed said dog when he ordered Ward to do it and he couldn't, and physically and emotionally (possibly sexually too since some of his behavior is raising red flags with abuse survivors who watch the show) abused him for the next fifteen years. Pretty bad case of Stockholm Syndrome in action.

This is why I wrote this secret.....

I pretty much posted something on my Tumblr explaining that if you watched Captain America, HYDRA started out affliated with the Nazi in the films. However it was revealed the Red Skull/Hydra was in leage with their own. Modern Hydra has their own philosophy.

I'm just... kind of curious as to how they think having a sad backstory in any way makes Ward more redeemable than if he was evil for shits and giggles. There are plenty of abuse survivors out there who didn't turn into murderers and/or walked away from their abusers. Having a sad childhood doesn't make the people he killed (or tried to kill) any less dead.

To me the very fact that he isn't simply rotting in prison for the rest of his natural life, let alone that they're even considering bringing him back on the team, should earn the whole team (and most of SHIELD for that matter) a Darwin Award.

Okay, so I haven't been keeping up with season 2 news outside of casting news (holy shit! Lucy Flawless Lawless, you guys!). Was it confirmed Ward is back on the team or is this just fan theory?

Pretty sure that what you're actually angry at is the fan reactionand not the actual writing. Or maybe the writing's terrible, too. IDK, I rarely watch the show.

idk HOW they're going to redeem him...I feel you because I have ambivalent feelings about him. I like him as a character in that I feel his arc was interesting, but for another season? They kind of painted him into a corner characterization-wise. He wasn't a Nazi, he's not in it for the ideology, but he is a grown ass man and should have been able to figure out what's up. And threatening to rape Skye was all kinds of not-cool.

(I did like in the comicon panel when someone asked like, "Do you think Fitz will EVER be able to forgive Ward?" and Clark Gregg was like "Maybe if he gets him a monkey....")

The Ward apologism in this thread is pretty gross. I guess it's true that if you're a reasonably attractive dude in media, certain people will fall all over themselves to excuse your actions.

I'm not sure why you're blaming the writers for the fans' reactions. Do you really want them to write something standard and predictable* just so people don't get upset? Do you not realize that fans will latch onto any excuse to raise hell over an issue in fandom? Do you think the writers sat down and said "gee, let's do this because it will get the biggest rise out of everyone"? Your logic is dumb and your vehemence is misplaced, OP.

*yes, I know the "close ally becomes true villain/sidekick" trope is an old and classic one, but it was still a surprising plot twist and created a lot of controversy over this character; they could have done a simple "shoot villains, win day" ending to avoid stirring the pot, but do you really think artistic integrity and plot should be compromised to cater to melodramatic teenagers?
