You don't have to care about fashion to think that clothes look pretty. And the nice thing about daydreaming is that you don't have to deal with all the quotidian details and obstacles between you and your fantasy, like caring about fashion and knowing all of the details of how dressing all fancy works.

I did cry at this episode a lot back in the day but I don't now. I don't know if this is I'm desensitised or the retcon removed some of the gut punch and not for the better. I think it's a combination of both.

But The Sting still makes me cry. Along with the one about Fry's brother.

Eh, Good Guy Tom isn't nearly in the same tier as any sinfest character ever. He's a deliberate two dimensional background character and has been from the start . Tatsuya MADE his previously complex characters increasingly 2d, which is much different.

Generally speaking, Modesitt's heros/heroines aren't supposed to be particularly loveable. In the fantasies mostly they start off dense and kind of grow in understanding until they are reasonably decent human beings. In the sci-fi ones, they mostly start off dense and kind of grow into the understanding that they will have to do terrible things and then try to manage to live with themselves afterward because not doing the terrible things will result in even more terrible things happening. IMO the sorceress books were not his best series, however.
