Depressing Stream #1

So, because Noodles enjoys fellating me, this week he has turned the shitstream movie list over to me! This week, the movies will not be shit! However, because I am a harsh benefactor I have decided that he shall play only movies showcasing the darkest ennui this world has to offer. You're welcome.

First up will be a movie recommended by blessezmoi, guaranteed to make you feel either sad or claustrophobic*, or both. Starring Ryan Reynolds, directed by Chris Cortez, and with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 87%, it's Buried.

Second on the docket is a fucked up psychological horror classic. Chock full of visuals that inspired the likes of Silent Hill and your second cousin's film school final project, it's Jacob's Ladder!



It'll leave you wondering if reality is real and where the limits of sanity lie.

And to end things off, we'll be turning to a lighter note with Stephen King's The Mist. Most accurately termed an action horror, this film is really a commentary about what happens when small town mentality is reduced to life in a metaphorical petri dish on the verge of what might be the apocalypse. It's a personal favorite, and is definitely not to be missed.

Don't despair though, intermissions will be happy baby animal videos and heavy drinking so we don't all wind up crying into our saftey blankets by the end of the night. Plus, as always, there's a porn parody for the after party and this week we'll be showing Tosh.Hole! Gay porn without skipping the sex scenes! It's a Christmas miracle!

Okay, here's a risky thread. Let's try to not get shut down in five posts.

Put aside our differences. What about your own 'faction' in all this do you not agree with? Difficulty: Don't eat each other alive. Just vent, just chill. Like a Christmas truce.

I'm pretty anti-GG, the reasons are at the moment not the point. But I'll give ya this one: I've REALLY come to dislike Brianna Wu and her open hostility to everyone. Friend, foe, doesn't matter, she'll get on you with the rough side of her tongue. She's argumentative and destructive, derailing, can't take a single criticism without lashing out in a completely disproportionate way, and while I appreciate her loyalty to those she herself calls her friends, sometimes she's really backing the wrong horse there.

Some of those friends are total assholes.

Anyway, she's part of why I don't really 'faction' up anymore. As any sort of figurehead for being against GG, god, anyone else. And you can't calmly criticize her in a forum where she hangs out, because it's the same insipid circlejerking defense of her that the 'faction' claims to despise on the other side of the fence.

Okay, I'm good.

Names you always associate with characters

There are certain names that have been almost tainted for me by encountering them early in fiction.

The surname Coulter always seemed glamorous and definitely feminine, thanks to Mrs Coulter in "The Golden Compass." I read that before I knew about Ann Coulter, fortunately.

Her name isn't right anyway - Anne will always look better with the E (but it's still not as romantic as Cordelia or Geraldine).

Every time I see the name MacGregor I think of the guy whose farm Peter Rabbit was trespassing on.

Lowell always reminds me of the racist family in the Baby-Sitter's Club (no, I don't think everyone with that name is racist. Duh.)

I'm eating an apple for the first time in years, and it got me thinking. My father used to buy them so often when I still lived at his place that once I moved out I didn't touch them for years. Same thing happened with certain brand of bread.

I also once ate a meatball that had gone bad (it had this... gravel-like texture) and I still can't touch meatballs.

donauwelle. i don't know if you guys know it since it's from germany (and austria?) but it's a cake made of sour cherries, buttermilk, chocolate and cocoa. the color (black, white, red) is also the reason why it's sometimes called Snow White Cake.

it's REALLY good but i had way too much of it at a wedding. like six or seven pieces of it. i didn't get sick from it but it definitely satisfied my hunger for it for the next eight or nine years. still can't eat it to this day. if i have no other choice, i'll eat it, but otherwise no, thank you.
