Getting butthurt because other people think a guy who canonly liked to beat up and sexually assault people, might have grown up to be an abuser is something I would expect from a rabid fan.

I don't see why anyone else would get their panties in a twist over James being seen as a potential abuser.

I completely agree with you. Snape was a complex guy. Not being evil doesn't mean he WASN'T an asshole, and his super-fans' bendy-straw contortions of the story to try and make him into a perfect misunderstood little puff pastry are both ridiculous and super immature. You CAN love a guy who is both an asshole and a good man. Indeed, that's what I think is so great about him.

I've seen a lot of Snape threads around here lately but none where people were literally saying Snape was perfect/angelic/had no flaws? Of course given how often these discussions come up I probably missed some.

I should say upfront that I almost always like the "bad guys". To me they are always more interesting and have a better backstory. I like them because they are flawed, often wrong, and make mistakes. I have been intrigued by Snape since the first book because you could just tell there was more to his story then what was there. I don't think any characters in the series are 'born from angel tears'. Everyone in the series even Dumbledore is flawed including your precious James.

I'm usually into bad guys. Snape just hits too close to home for me and the all the Snapefen who excuse his abusive behavior have made me go from disliking him or being uninterested to hating him.

Yeah "abusive" is the new hot button word now, which is highly counter productive.

But James Potter was always an ass and I wish JK had portrayed him as a better man so that I could actually care when he died. It kind of cracks me up that she is sitting there scratching her head wondering why everyone loves Snape so much when she never bothered to make James likeable other than to say, "He got much better." So what? We want to see it happen damn it!! XD It's hard to care about a character unless we have a compelling reason to do so. And no, him contributing half his genes to Harry isn't good enough.

I thought the whole point of that arc was Harry learning that nobody was perfect, up to and including his parents. It deliberately flies in the face of the typical narrative of the sacrificial parent hero, instead showing that nobody - not even someone willing to go down the heroic sacrifice route - is a perfect person.

Honestly, the idea that nobody is perfect but that doesn't mean you can't do good things is a very key part of the Harry Potter series.

James Potter was a rich popular kid who bullied the social outcasts because it amused him to humiliate someone. Someone who does that isn't a good person.

He's an asshole.

That doesn't mean Snape WASN'T an asshole but James is still very much one.

On the one hand, I agree that the overly-invested fans can veer into very odd territory, with all kinds of rationalizations. On the other hand, this is fandom, and this kind of behavior is endemic. For instance, have you never come across the great woobification of Loki? The Snape superfans are hardly unique in fandom-land.

I never understand 'fans' who turn characters who are written as morally ambiguous or evil into saints. What attracted them to that person in the first place if they're going to ignore who they are? It seems pointless when there are *actual* saintly characters around.
