Calories in, calories out. You can be fat in any occupation. If people like chubby Rikku, it's not unrealistic just because of her occupation.

This is just wrong. There are occupations where you cannot be fat and do your job. And "calories in, calories out" is SUCH a dangerous method to just spout like it's nothing. It's how you end with teenagers eating 600 calories a day and trying to exercise like it's their job. When that doesn't fucking work and can be deadly.

I'm very pro cheesecake but I think RHA is fun.

But I wish there was an inverted version for male characters. Boys need to slut it up more. WOO!

Is this really what passes for fat nowadays? The pic on the right is not what I'd call fat. She has bigger boobs and thicker limbs and a bit of a gut; she doesn't look like a beach ball.

The only thing that bothers me is I don't think all styles REQUIRE realism. That's not to say I don't want more diverse body types, because I do, but arguing "but but but reality!" in terms of favoring either a skinny, muscled or overweight body is not a great argument the more cartoony a style is. And a problem with some of the photoshop modifications people do is that they lose the sense of design that the original character had.

Diversity within an established style is what is important. Elsa shouldn't be a clone of Anna and they shouldn't both be a clone of their mother who is a clone of ever other cg Disney character. Designers need to challenge themselves to create women of all body types (though to be fair I won't put the blame entirely on the designers as it's often the higher ups who won't let diverse body types go to market.)

But I do think body type diversity is important, even in cartoony styles. This doesn't mean we need to lose the "fantasy" or that we can't have skinny characters, of course we can! But we can also have characters with muscle and characters with a few pounds on them, everyone doesn't have the same "fantasy" so we need to stop acting like we should.

If we're going to be talking realism then maybe fighting characters should be modelled after actual soldiers and athletes. But I don't think most of them look like Final Fantasy characters.

This reminds me of some parts of the of Haikyuu fandom. All the boys are athletic, exercise every day, and play volleyball, but are sometimes drawn and headcanoned as obese. I get wanting to have more fat representation, but the characters they choose to show that through makes no sense.

I'm all for fat acceptance but I hate the type of argument going "the story has dragons and airships so what's stopping fat people from being ballerinas or marathon runners?????"

No matter how outrageous your fantasy or sci-fi universe, humans will generally be humans with human limitations because they're the fucking point of reference. You can't create an immersive fantasy world without grounding it on some level of realism and familiarity. No, fat people won't be in amazing shape, children won't be sexually mature, dogs won't be rocket scientists, unless there's a specific context to make those things plausible!

I don't really mind it if people want it, I'm a larger lady myself, and I personally prefer playing as the skinnier characters so to each their own says I.

I do understand why this stuff is supposed to exist. It's sucky that only my preferences are being met on a large scale. However, I do think you're entirely spot on about why people do this. It's a shaming thing. The internet these days seems to be one big battle ground of "Them and us" and no-one seems to do anything "For us" they all seem to be interested in doing something "Against them", if that makes sense.

Also, I'm kinda sick of the number of people shaming me for liking big tits and small clothes. It's not "I want my fan service to happen" it seems to be more "I don't want your fan service to happen" And that whole "It's just for men" thing is fucking awful. Kinda shows the mentality present when "It's just for men" means "it doesn't matter and should be removed", like, even if only men liked it that would be a good reason to remove something? Cause men are morally wrong, right? If it doesn't make women the focus it actively excludes us and shouldn't be? Never mind how dismissive such an idea is towards the women who like it (Remember women, were the once who matter to you apparently? What about us? If we like something that's "Just for men" does that men we don't matter any more? Do we become honorary men?)

I should stop here. I could rant for days.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-04 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I agree with you. I enjoy skinny characters if that's how they were designed. I get that people want more heavier looking women represented in media, which would be cool. But honestly, you also have to look at cultural differences too. Rikku is from a game made in japan. Japanese people and asians in general expect people to be way skinnier than they would be in a western culture. This game was built with a japanese audience in mind so.

From personal experience

(Anonymous) 2016-02-04 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I am 5'4 and 120 pounds. I have been referred to as "thin" by multiple people. Still, my body doesn't resemble the first picture at all. (I'm a bit squishier in the middle and lack the thigh gap)

People want to see depictions of a wide range of body types because the cookie cuter "super skinny but with big boobs and butt" isn't how a mahority of women look.

I'm not saying there's a problem with beig attracted to that kind of thing, but when literally every depiction of "beauty" is this, what the fuck are you saying about real life women?

.....I don't mind teh occasional fan change (like teh idea i've seen floating around of a chubby!Jaina Proudmoore due to teh fact that she's obviously from a very wealthy family and chubbs usually denoted wealth in societies like that), but...Rikku is a very agile, small, Thief...her being that chubby just doesn't mesh for me.

And yes, I know there are larger people who can be very nimble. I've seen teh women who are do yoga and certain dances, but for fantasy games, it's very hard to suspend that kind of disbelief. It just doesn't work for Rikku.

"You burn fat when you work out!"

So true. I lost 20 lbs since I started working retail simply because I'm on my feet and moving around all the time. I'd gained weight at my former desk job because all I did was sit there. Once I started being more active, the weight dropped right off. And I don't even exercise beyond work and walking to and from work!

(Anonymous) 2016-02-06 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, please. Do me a favour, google Nia Jax. Then also google Kevin Owens, Bray Wyatt, Mark Henry and quite a few more erestlers. (Who are not thin who have a ridiculously physically demanding job and are very, very fit). I'm not saying any of what it says in your "bla bla". I'm saying you're just plain wrong and your assumptions are based on prejudice against fat people and the subscribing to incorrect and regurgitated steretypes.
