I love how UPSET people get about it too. "How dare you criticize me for masturbating to the thought of raping children! That's so INSENSITIVE!"

Re: 32

(Anonymous) 2008-03-07 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Mmm, not quite what people here are trying to defend. Although I gotta admit, I was pretty amused at all the strikethrough wank when it happened. "WHAT DO YOU MEAN, I CAN'T WRITE STEAMY SEX FICS WITH FIFTEEN YEAR OLDS WITHOUT REPERCUSSIONS?!"

Honestly, I will never understand why people write porn with kids who are ridiculously young. Granted, people were marrying their cousins when they were fifteen, but that was over a hundred years ago when people could only farm, procreate and go to boring parties in their spare time.

3-- I only ever shipped Newt/Anathema and the witchfinder sergent and the old lady in his building that he kept calling a whore. I thought Crowley and Aziraphale's relationship worked really well the way it was written and didn't need anything else.

30-- "Spaced" kicks ass! My roommate and I were talking about that part just the other day, actually.

32-- I accepted a long time ago that people have different kinks. I avoid incest/rape fics because I find them disturbing; having been a victim of both, I can never see either of them as anything other than horrible. I know other people either don't have that experience, or have a different way of coping with it than me. I think the same thing as you, I just never say it out loud.

59-- I feel that way about a lot of the fandoms I'm in.

65. I liked Miyako!

32. I agree. The amount of people desensitized to rape and incest in fandom these days sickens me.
37. I ship it so hard, you don't even know.
46. AGREE. Liking a character is one thing, but the girls (and boys, I assume) who say that they identify with Light and could even do it better disturb me. Seriously, is life so horrible is suburbia that you want to kill all those around you in secret? Hot Topic generation, seriously ...

32. It's funny, I never believed people who said everyone on the internet was a sick bastard. Then I discovered incest-ficcers and the "everything is okay" idiots who won't stand up to them.

(Anonymous) 2008-03-07 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
53. Hang on, they are books about overcoming oppression and orthodoxy. Just because it so happens that the oppressive authority in the books is an organised religion doesn't mean that the idea can't be extended.

(Anonymous) 2008-03-07 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I think what they're going towards is the fact that Philip Pullman can be an absolute ass about organized religion in real life. As in, apparently thinks the church in this world is as evil as that in Lyra's - least, that's the impression I've got from the interviews I've read.

2. Ooooh so pretty...

3.Thank you! Honestly, I hate seeing the Aziraphael/Crowley slash everywhere. It's not that I hate the slash, I hate that that's basically all there is to fandom. Sorry, when I read it, it never occurred to me to think that about them. I just liked their interaction.

Slash, I don't mind you being everywhere, but would you please still leave room for other aspects?

18. Given that I've seen a good many artists who draw phenomenally and can't write worth pants, don't worry about it. Now if by crappy art skills, you mean crappy visual story-telling skills, you might have something to go on, but really, it's a bit apples to oranges.

25. YOU FAIL AS WELL! Oi, people, stop doing that.

34. I'm sorry to hear that. Every now and again, our parents screw us up without realizing it.

51. Doug Tennaple (sp?) FTW!

53. I'm glad that somebody said that. Honestly, that's why I haven't read them--not just because they conflict with my faith (for a classic series, I'd be willing to try), but because in every interview and whatnot I've read, he's just brimming over with bitterness and vitriol.

59. What?
I have no idea what you're even trying to talk about?
The words are there, but they're not actually making sense.

You're not alone. I was so disappointed when I found out just how much of a tool Pullman was about his beliefs and regarding what he wanted HDM to be read as... kind of crushed my faith in writers in general for a while.

What? I was twelve!

And to be honest? I thought up until now that I was the only one who felt like that! Glad to know I'm not alone!

I really agree. I thought it was totally awesome when I first read the trilogy when I was twelve, because OH MY GOSH ANGELS AND DAEMONS AND LET'S SAVE THE WORLD PAN.

But then when he was like LOL ATHEISM I was all, "...way to ruin the ride, Pullman. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200." :(

[identity profile] andy-longwood.livejournal.com 2008-03-07 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
3. Most of the people I know who read Good Omens keep talking about how incredibly slashy it is and all the Crowley/Aziraphale subtext, but I never saw it. Not at all.

Newt/Anathema, though, I was behind from the start. =3

53. TY, Yes. I figured out the whole anti-all-religion aspect pretty early on, but even now I still try to recapture the fantasy adventure magic of the first two books every time I read them. Amber Spyglass, though, I've never really felt the urge to pick up a second time. I like my kid fantasy books fun and not beating me over the head with anti-faith allegories.

I had the same reaction when I found out that Chronicles of Narnia were Christian allegories, actually - a vague sense of "Really? What, really? Eeeehhh." When I was in second grade, they were just fun.

Really, for me, I draw from pretty much every religion I come across to assemble my own faith, so reading books that bash any specific form of faith-having still feels like something of an attack on my amorphous little 1-person religion. Why can't we all just get along?

[identity profile] lady-ganesh.livejournal.com 2008-03-07 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Spyglass was a huge letdown for me, because it was so damn heavy-handed. METAPHOR IS A GOOD THING, PEOPLE. LOVE IT.

44. Valant is freaking awesome. I don't write yaoi or het, but I want to write crazy love-circle fic with Valant, Zak, and Thalassa.

53. Kind of the exact opposite of the Chronicles of Narnia, isn't it? Once you see the religious message in Narnia, it ruins the fantasy. Once you see the anti-religious message in HDM, it ruins the fantasy.

Of course that's not true for everyone, and if you agree with one or the other message it probably enhances the story. It just leaves the rest of us out in the cold.

Re: 44 and 53

[identity profile] lady-ganesh.livejournal.com 2008-03-07 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm much closer to HDM's mindset than probably any other, and it was still too much for me.
