Yeah tbh I don't think anybody is actually saying DOGS is a good manga. I wouldn't really venture to call anything from Shounen Jump "good," but it's enjoyable, and sometimes that's enough for me. You can't always eat steak-- sometimes you just want a big, greasy cheeseburger, and that's basically what you're going to get from a manga about pretty boys shooting shit up. If I want to read something good, I'll go get some Tezuka, but I really don't understand why DOGS is worse than any other fight-of-the-week you'd get from a Jump imprint title.

53: Yeah, I loved them when I first read them, then I found about about the whole anti-organized-religion thing, and it kind of tinted them badly. I still like to read them, but I skip over large parts of Amber Spyglass.
Interestingly enough, the whole pro-religious-concepts in Narnia never bothered me, and I still have to squint to see them clearly. I guess Pullman was using bricks while Lewis was using sturdy cushions?

32. I don't like to bash people for having a weird fetish or paraphilia, since, well, I have one (not a rape fetish, but I don't like telling people what). Are they healthy? No, psychologically speaking, most of them aren't. But I have to hope that a lot of the reason that fandom is okay with rape fetishes is because, well, most of us don't want to tell another person that their fetish makes them a terrible person deep inside and that they must immediately seek counseling that they might not have money or time for. Seeing as there are some of us with fetishes ourselves, I assume that on the most part, fandom realizes that sexual attraction to and arousal from a strange, and sometimes unpleasant thing isn't something a person usually chooses to have.

But yeah. I think if a person doesn't realize that there's something at least abnormal (and slightly wrong, according to psychology) about their fetish, then they should probably be told gently. But most of us do live in the real world, and we do know that these things are often considered sick, and a sign that we're bad, immoral people. Fandom is the last place we need to hear it, if you ask me. But maybe I'm just internalizing this issue too much.


42. In a rational, thoughtful way, I find power fascinating. (Had to make sure I didn't phrase that otherwise, given my above secret-reply, or I'd get people trying to connect the dots =/) And suddenly everyone understands my screenname, I'm sure. xD I find myself really drawn to characters who have, gain, or covet power - it's just a really cool dynamic. Maybe it says something bad about you, but it might just be a fascination with something a little weird. As long as you're not eating brains or something, I don't think you need to worry about megalomania, at least. =Db


65. I identified with her too. xD I always just assumed people hated her because she got in the way of their precious twu wuv DaiKen, though, so once I realized that, the character bashing didn't bother me so much. It just seemed kind of sad.

58. On risk of apparently being one of two people who disagree on this...I haven't read The Fountainhead, but loved Atlas Shrugged. Hell, if they were in a movie maybe it would inspire someone somewhere to pick up a book and read it. Even if they disagreed with the philosophy it would be nice to have them THINK. To all the previous commenters who are so utterly taken aback by the fact that an atheist expressed an opinion in writing: get over it, dudes. Seriously, what? There are enough books out there written to dovetail neatly with your standard theology - if it's not too much to ask I'd quite like to have some pro-free-thought materials available for me to read and to provide for my (future) children.

ATHEISTS ARE PEOPLE TOO, GUYS. We do not just sit around in ivory towers all day talking about how stupid we think religious people are. We read books sometimes! And sometimes it's fun - however rare - to read a book that shares our values! And HDM is a great and well-written example of that.
