What are some canon couples you just never bought or enjoyed? (In general, not only same-sex couples.)

Re: Inspired by #1

(Anonymous) 2017-03-30 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
- I stopped enjoying Remus/Tonks from Harry Potter. I actually shipped them pretty hardcore before they were canon, but once they became canon it was a mess.

- Definitely Mitch and Cam from Modern Family, and it wouldn't surprise me if the secret was referring to them. I actually think they would work better as a new couple (like I said in a comment), because then I could at least see it as them trying to get "used" to their differences.

- Rachel/Ross from FRIENDS. They were horrible to each other. Monica/Chandler was the better of the series, if you ask me.

Harry/Ginny.

JKR tried not to make her perfect near the end of the series, but when you only see her through Harry's eyes mostly and the series has rewarded it's 'fiery and brave' heroes...yeah, it didn't happen. Never was sold on it, but I think they're both capable by themselves.

Jamie/Layla from X-Factor. I like the idea, but hate the execution. The ship was forced as hell and Layla was never more than a manic pixie dream girl.

Kira Nerys with every love interest before Odo.
It was like a series-long strategy to give her a boyfriends so boring that a literal beige blob would seem charismatic in comparison.

I JUST started watching Legion. I'm two episodes in and I'm really liking it so far, but I'm really NOT liking David/Sydney as the seeming canonical pairing. The whole "no touching" issue is undoubtedly supposed to make their relationship more interesting, but to me it just feels forced and unsubtle. Plus, they just establish the pairing and serve it to us on a platter in episode one, which has got to be the most boring possible way to do it. I'm really hoping that the show is being misleading about this pairing, and that David/Syd doesn't end up being a thing.

Clark/Lana in Smallville. I just find them incredibly boring. I mean, neither of them is really all that interesting on their own, and then you pair them up and it's like boring squared.

A lot of the couples in HP tbh, none of them really worked for me and while I liked Remus/Tonks to begin with it went in a direction I didn't like. I still like them on some level but it is a lot more muted than it was.

Castle/Beckett, I just never really got why they were together. Like they solved cases together and shit, which was great and they made for good friends but I never felt like that romance made much sense other than because he was the main guy and she was the main girl.

Kurt/Blaine on Glee, but then I didn't really care about either of them much. Same for Rachel/Finn, it mostly bored me.

Matt/Karen on Daredevil, part of it is certainly because I actually preferred the idea of Karen/Foggy but in season 2 especially I found the Matt/Karen scenes dreadfully dull.

Emma and Hook on Once Upon a Time. And it gets worse because their shippers insist it's because my Emma ship "lost," because no one could possibly hate Hook otherwise. Except for the bit where I don't ship Emma with anyone unless the alternative is Hook, in which case I suddenly ship her with everyone who's not him. He's gross by himself and Emma became a completely different, selfish, codependent mess when she "let down her walls" for him.

Ron/Hermione. With other canon couples I didn't buy in canon (Remus/Tonks, Harry/Ginny), there were fanon versions I could see working. But with Ron and Hermione, they'd need a lot of work and a lot of change to both characters for me to believe in their romance. Like, years and years down the line.

Chakotay/Seven. WTF was that even?

Robin/Ted. Not in the early seasons, but at the end. It made no sense. Robin made it clear she had no feelings for Ted, and the show made it clear why they wanted different, but equally valid things, and why they did not work as a long-term couple.

Willow/Kennedy. I don't even hate Kennedy, but I just didn't feel the chemistry. And I think Willow needed more time. It was very rushed.

Buffy/Riley. I didn't mind them in season 4. But in season 5 I really disliked Riley. Suddenly he became the guy who couldn't handle having a girlfriend stronger than him (and everyone else then blamed her for leaving, which sucked).

Emma and Hook. I don't care enough about Once anymore to anti-ship anything else. But I still hate this ship even though I don't even watch the show anymore.

I never really cared about Usagi/Mamoru. I always watched Sailormoon for the senshi and I never really bought their miracle romance (no matter what version, original anime, manga or crystal.) Thankfully Usagi and the other senshi are strong enough characters that it's easy to ignore anytime it gets particularly heavy on the Usagi/Mamoru romance (especially in the original anime since they often gave you breaks from any romantic drama.)

Some of the smaller romantic plots in Sailor moon were better, and in the original anime my favorite couple was Haruka and Michiru.

Re: Inspired by #1

Honestly? Almost any main canon het couple on a popular show/movie.

The way most (het) relationships are written in fiction is so dull and uninteresting to me. Same sex couples are sometimes better, but like the OP in #1 mentioned, a lot of times they're really stereotypical, so they're not always better.

To me, pretty much the majority of couples in most things aren't that great. Usually I see way more chemistry/interesting dynamics between characters who aren't a couple and never will be, and the couple times pairings I've shipped have actually gotten together, the writers then proceeded to destroy everything that made them interesting/made me ship them in the first place.

Lunafreya/Noctis. Not only is it forced and simply one of the most badly written "romances" of Final Fantasy (even Rinoa/Squall pales in comparison), it's also skeevy as hell. I absolutely hate that "romance" and especially the post credit scene.

More general: I usually can't stand any canon couple that fits the "pair the spares" category. Especially if it's like in Harry Potter, where just absolutely everyone has to have that "married with children" ending.

Most canon couples tbh.

Probably the one that sticks out the most though is Anna/Kristoff. I don't really dislike it, I just didn't see any chemistry at all between them.

Also rewatching recently, I didn't like House/Stacey at all. Just... the whole mess. The slap slap kiss, the infidelity, just... ugh.

Gil/Sara
I've said it before. They just didn't seem to fit. Gil was so open-minded and she was so closed-minded. They didn't seem to share any common interests outside their jobs. He often looked like a deer-in-the-headlights when she was coming onto him in aggressive way. And, when they were together, they had terrible communication. I didn't think the actor chemistry was right for a romance either. Still bummed the finale was hijacked by their relationship.

After the events of the Season 2 finale, I couldn't buy Clarke having feelings for Lexa at all (and it didn't help that for their Season 3 relationship (by necessity) was really rushed). Hate sex, maybe. True love forever? Hell fucking no.
