124. Sweetheart, I'm so sorry. That must be horrible for you, and there must be thousands of other fans who feel the same way.

Everyone will of course be chanting "But rape fantasies are just fantasies!" Well, we all have our own weird little turn-ons, and imaginary rape is a very common one. That said, fandom is sometimes not careful enough about separating the fantasy of rape from the reality of rape. In many cases that problem could be solved by a simple disclaimer at the start of the fic. (I've seen dirty books include a little disclaimer about safe sex, which is not a bad idea.)

IMHO, folx, if you're going to write non-con, you ought to do a bit of reading about the real thing first. I don't mean you have to derail your fantasy with the awful details of rips and bruises and infections and post-traumatic stress disorder - I just mean you should be aware of, and sensitive about, the difference between fantasy and reality. (Especially if you're going to defend your fic by insisting the two things are not the same.)

...I don't see what those awful details have to do with the fantasy, and I also think it's out of place to suggest that people who write nc don't know about them, since most people who write nc are women, and one out of three women...? Seriously, what's needed is better labelling (if you think it's unpleasant to be a rape survivor and run across fantasy rape fic, try being a rape survivor looking for fantasy rape fic and finding the realistic kind), not silly disclaimers like "everyone knows rape is bad in RL, right?" because everyone does, and those who don't will hardly be convinced by that, and the real problem is that there are too many men out there who don't actually get what rape is, like for instance they confuse "allowing you to pay for my dinner" with "agreeing to let you fuck me".

124 - You have a real point. I-I'm so sory about what happened to you. I totaly agree. 'non-con' just isn't a word to be used that way, when 'non-con' = rape. Rape is a dirty horrible crime, and I wish it would be portrayed like that more in fanficiton, when it has to be portrayed. I dunno. It's not something to 'get off' to, imo - it's something that makes me really FEEL for the character involved. And want to hug them and tell them it'll be alright. It's bizarre. I hope this secret makes people think. Rape is not sexy at all.

It's like they use the term "non-consensual" as a nicer way to say "rape" when they are, in fact, the same thing.

I can kind of see writing a fic where a character gets raped, because it can further their development as a character, with their personality and how they end up overcoming the whole ordeal. But to write one just for the sake of getting off to it? (I'm talking "LOL THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF THIS FIC IS TO GET THIS CHARACTER RAPED AND THAT'S ALL BECAUSE IT'S SOOOOO HOT OH GOD OH YEAH *fap fap*) What the hell?

And um...

I hope this secret makes people think. Rape is not sexy at all.

It won't. :') They're more concerned with making a barrage of "ITZ ONLY FICTION!!1" than realizing that it's just wrong.

148. Well said. I recently read a book called Representing Black Britain: Black and Asian Images on Television. The author, Sarita Malik, calls TV "the primary site where the nation is imagined and imagines itself". Examining and questioning its content is never a waste of time. 124-There is a difference between Rape and non-con/dub-con, and fan-fic rape OR dub-con isn't the "real thing" anymore than perfect, wonderful, fan-fic consensual vanilla sex is the real thing.

I've written m/m slash with an absolute verbal "No," and the mental acknowledgement by the other character that it was an act of rape and still labeled it non-con, based on fannish parameters.

My personal fanfic fetish is hate!sex and that can look a lot like either non-con or out-and-out rape depending on who's writing it.

I'm lucky enough never to have experienced any of those things even at the lighter edges. (Harassment, inappropriate touching etc.) But when it's hot and well-written and features a pairing that I go for anyway? I'm there.

143-Moffat gave me the real Captain Jack. I can forgive him pretty much anything.

144-Poor Sam! I'm still working out how my own responses, but I now that I'm going through the episodes again knowing how it ends, I don't think he had a choice. The foreshadowing of the finger cut in S1E2 is very telling. But yeah, it was sad. We never got to see him with Maya. :(

124. Not touching the main topic with a ten meter cattle prod but I just wanted to note that "non-con" doesn't always mean "rape". The way I've seen it used, it's a blanket term for any non-consensual sexual contact, whereas rape has a more specific meaning, generally. Yes, usually "nc" or "non-con" on a fic means there's a rape in there, but not always, and I think it's probably better to use a blanket term to cover all of it. Then it's easy to recognize if you're scrolling through a list of fics, whether you're looking for it or looking to avoid it.
