Oh, don't worry about it, hon. I'm in my 50's and have been in some form of fandom since my teens. You are not too old.

If there is anyone who bothers you in fandom, you learn to ignore them. There have always been fangirls and fanboys.

You will find where you fit in with people you like.

150: Yay for finally realising why we all like him so much... but I still wonder why you didn't understand us all before the timeskip. I think he's equally wonderful then. But then, to each there own matter of taste. *shrugs* But then... I do think he's wonderful all the time (yes, even when he's being an egotistical bastard at the very beginning).

101. I hate people who like this. It's not fandom's fault, it's just that your sister might have some problems detaching from it. If it that serious, get some affected and influential family members and talk to her about it if you're not doing about it. I can bitch about certain addiction some of my close family members and friend had but I never blame the source.

108. That's nice you're not in slash, I guess. And not slash fans are there only for the guys either. If someone push anything, just ignore them.

123. I know the feeling. I'm 24 and the fandoms are dominated by 16-18 years olds. I don't like to converse with underage fans too much either because it creeps me out in that regard.

124. You're right, no one deserves rape, but I'm pretty sure that people at least understand the ramifications of how emotionally and physically damaging it is. However, rape is a very popular fantasy for women (to the point there's services that stimulates rape for women who want it). I agree with calling it non-con rather than rape is not to cheapen rape, non-con fics play more on powerplay that people get a kick on. I agree I wish that original BL can chill with the non-con (personally, I don't see it much in my fandom, as much as dubcon anyway) because overused, annoying trope is annoying and overused.

125. This can apply for all fandoms, seriously. I'm tired of "YOU'RE NOT PLAYING THE WAY I WANT EVERYBODY TO PLAY!" Honestly, I don't care how people like to play around, I mean I wish people know that you can step and create whatever you want. Honestly.

136. If you seriously think so, don't. Also, the anime sucks anyway.

137. Wellll, I understand if they no longer feel safe in that house....

148. But it's fiction, that's why they tell you to care about actual people. And most of the time, those accusation of racism and sexism aren't really there.

115. Well, fictionalised people tend to be idealised and often have aspects smoothed out.
The problem with crushing on IRL people is that they get so OOC all the time

126. I always figured that the 'good fans' were the people who were fun to be around and the 'bad fans' were the ones you wished would go away. It had nothing to do with how snarky their humour is or how obscure their tastes are.

108. Luff. BTW, you should check out BBC's Robin Hood--soooo slashy! J/K. I don't like slash either. But honestly, that just makes the blatant fanservice funny.

114. "Liked?" As in, someone took out the religious subtext? Or just a sort of anti-secret in response to everyone who liked them better before they realized they were religious in nature. Personally, that's one of the things I love about those books. Well, that, Edmund, and Puddleglum.

116. Yeah. Though making a secret about it... But I get it. I feel the same way. It makes me want to go back to enjoying this show in a vaccum with only myself and my best friend.

143. Oh honestly. Yeah, it's totally shocking that people actually freaking enjoyed Coupling! A statement like that just makes you sound like a pretentious twit.
I want to know exactly how freaking sexist it is, really. I've read an article with maybe two statements that could be taken in a sexist manner, and even then I don't think it's as ZOMG RALLY THE TROOPS!!!! as so many people make it out to be. Maybe there's more to it, fine; in fact, I'm sure of it, because if it's all I've seen, then people need to cry moar. (Nowhere near as sexist as, say, Wheel of Time or anything). The only time the attitude bled over into Doctor Who in a way that was visible "hurh?" to people who aren't hyper-hyper sensitive to those sorts of things was the end of "Forests of the Dead."

Just finished showing my best friend Jekyll. I have never seen anyone make better use of 300 minutes of screentime, and it's filled with kick-tail women who generally rock socks.

144. Awww... That's so weird. I don't mean that in a condescending way, just... when I finished watching that show, I ran out of my room, found the first person in my dorm, and gave them a huge, giant huge, and ran around feeling amazingly happy for hours. I think it's a testament to how very good that show was that it can take something I'd normally find awful--jumping to your death on purpose--and actually make that an upbeat ending to me, where it was the only thing I wanted him to do. I wanted him to go back. And he did.
It kind of helps that I never really see these things (stories, that is) in black and white, so I figure he's not actually dead, not in any way that's important. He's just hanging in 1973 with Gene and Annie, happy and crime-solving his way through the afterlife. Or something. There couldn't've been any other ending. Him having stayed would've been too sad.

148. I agree that argument is lame: "Gosh, you think about things. They're dumb; think about other things." But I'll also say a lot of "sexism!" I've seen cried in fandom is a little...I don't know... I used the phrase hyper-sensitive before, and I think it holds true. Not always, not by a long shot. But a lot that I've encountered recently. Namely, a lovely debate that Fables (the comic) was totally sexist (because one of the main, strong women had kids and got married! Oh man, that totally undermines women everywhere!).

[identity profile] degreve.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 01:41 am (UTC)(link)

140. A good portion of X-Men fans surprisingly don't read the comics at all; they rely on the cartoons/movies for their entertainment. It's kind of upsetting when you're a comic fan and all anyone can talk about are the cartoons/movies, but hey.. what are you going to do? :(

Re: #140

[identity profile] zeepuppetsdance.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
*gives cookies*

I can agree with this on so many levels, but... It's also easy to understand how hard and daunting it might seem to new fans of the characters. With the cartoons and movies the characters are there and that's the canon. Neat with a wee bow attached.

With the comics... there is just SO MUCH to read to understand some things in canon. Good god, the Summers family alone can make a person cry with the complications.

124 – Others have said it better, so I won't go into too much detail.

Rapefic writers write for any number of reasons – which often include getting over the trauma of their own rape – and are no more likely to be rapists than murder mystery novelists are likely to be murderers.

146 – I listen to "The Sharpest Lives" whenever I feel down. MCR make me happy – I don't care what that says about me!

"Rapefic writers write for any number of reasons... and are no more likely to be rapists than murder mystery novelists are likely to be murderers."

I really dislike that analogy for the simple fact that the intention behind the acts in question. In a murder mystery/crime novel, the murder is not positively reinforced-- it's a crime and the person who perpetrated it must be brought to justice. In a lot of rape/"non-con" fics, the act is gratifying for the reader-- it's intended as a means of mental or even physical sexual gratification and arousal, and therefore justified or made acceptable. Obviously this doesn't include fics that deal with more realistic emotional and physical ramifications and don't glorify the act, but a lot of it does.

Also, I think the point the OP was trying to make was the term "non-con" is a copout term to skirt around the word "rape" and all the emotional baggage the term carries with it. I believe she wanted people to call an apple an apple.

124, 148

[identity profile] likespring.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
124. I think it, like anything, can be a very valid subject matter if handled properly -- as in, not romanticizing rape or something equally ridiculous and offensive. As a kink it's not my thing, but I won't harass people for it. But some people never warn for rape, and that is not on.

148. Exactly. I can partake in discussions online as well participate in activism in real life; the two are not mutually exclusive.

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
101. Probably a troll. In the off chance you aren't, if you hate fandom, why don't you just... not have anything to do with fandom? It's not hard. And even if fandom was somehow fucking with your sister, that probably means she needs psychological help for letting something for-fun and meaningless start "killing her." Have you considered, instead of bitching about- oh- everything, maybe talking to your parents, or a school/other counselor, or a psychologist, or staging an intervention? You know- doing something productive and helpful for the person you care about, instead of just whining.

108. Eek. Try staying as far away from the retards as possible and hanging with the sane fans? There are some of us, I promise. ;) SIGNED A SLASH FAN WHO IS A-OKAY WITH YOU LIKING OTHER THINGS INSTEAD.

Plus loev for female characters~ I hate the way a lot of slash fans just shuttle them off to the side and insult and hate them for no reason. Urgh. >:

111. Eh, don't sweat it. I agonized over this for a while, but I realized I don't really care if shipping animal/animal-like characters makes me a furry. If I ship people, I'll be proud of it. (:

114. ... I have no idea why this is a secret OR what you're comparing it to. As in compared to the movie? Thaaat was chock full of religious subtext too, you know. :/ Confused me is confused.

116. Some days, I wonder if we will get through a day of [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets without a Doctor Who wank-secret. THIS FANDOM BOGGLES MY MIND, SERIOUSLY.

119. I DO NOT MIND THIS. ... Says the KuroFay and SyaoSaku fan. No, seriously, VARIETY IS GOOD! I'm just sorry that most of the fandom would tear you apart for it.

122. afhaksfj okay I have not actually seen Heroes yet but I've heard about Hiro and that picture = D'AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW ♥

123. God dammit what is this "too old for fandom" idea? Sure, I know a bunch of teenagers in fandom. I also know a bunch of young adults in fandom. I also know some adults in fandom. PEOPLE STOP SPREADING THE IDEA THAT ENJOYING THINGS HAS AN AGE LIMIT, ashlfsajkfa. >[

124. Iiiiiii don't get the "RAPE IS SEXY" thing either, because no. It's not. But I still am just fine with, even enjoy, rape plots- not even because of the rape scene itself (if it's even done in detail). But because of the reactions of everyone after something that major and life-altering occurs. But I agree, the people who can only get off to rape are kind of scary, and the ones who think rape is a good punishment for being an unlikable character annoy the fuck out of me.

I'm sorry about what happened to you, and I'm glad you're getting things back to normal. Good luck ♥

125. Hahahaha I wonder how many people want to have lucid dreams for fandom-related purposes? |D ME TOO, OP, ME TOO.

126. You're not doing it wrong. People have a dumbass idea about what "DOIN IT WRONG" in fandom is. It has nothing to do with what you enjoy, it has EVERYTHING to do with how you react to and treat others for liking what they like. You're not doing it wrong... they are.

128. So... why do you hide it? Geez, pretty girl is pretty, why are your panties in a bunch? :/

130. I- I'm sorry, this is only barely related, but I suddenly have the mental image of the Megatokyo comic where Piro is sitting in the shoujo manga section reading through all the manga, trying to find something relating to his situation to tell him what to do. :>

136. The anime sucks anyway. Read the manga, I would not recommend the anime to someone I hated. D: The songs are pretty, but the animation is sub-par, and by the second season Beetrain was fucking with the canon so much that the filler shit they pulled was actually going against clearly stated canon plot points (let's have Fay use magic to help him cook even though it's a huge deal that he never uses magic for anything, ever, even when his life is in danger! WHAT FAIL). Clamp totally broke ties with the studio and is now doing OVA's with another studio for the rest of the series. Seriously, avoid that anime like all hell.

That said, give the manga a try- just get past the noodly character designs cos real people sure don't look like that like... at all. XD

143. Coupling was good. Sorry. =D (The British version, NOT the American, but I think you were talking about the British, so!)

146. sdkjhdsgs I SUPPORT THE IDEA OF EVERY "_ SAVED MY LIFE" SECRET HAVING KAMINA GLASSES. That said, cool. 8D

147. That is me now with Pokemon. ):

149. SOLUTION: OURAN ORGY. ♥

150. TIMESKIP VIRAL BREAKS MY CAPSLOCK BUTTONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN okay no seriously he is amazing after the timeskip. Fuck yes. ♥

152. It really can be enough, sometimes. It can, and these people should be encouraged. But if there's any chance that something else might help, too, they should look into other things. Fandom might save you, or fandom PLUS someone you feel comfortable talking with might save you. You never know, and when a person's life is on the line, EVERYTHING that can be tried, SHOULD be.

155. Oh, it's okay, most of the people making secrets use it wrong. It's literally someone who thinks Japan > everything else, would prefer to have been a Japanese person born in Japan, thinks dropping random Japanese into conversations is grand, OTHER TONS OF STUPID RETARDED FANISMS etc, all of the above... It's NOT just a fan of Japanese things. I mostly hear it used in a humorous fashion or by retards who are using it wrong anyway, so it's no big loss not to know it.

not!secret #2: Riiiiight. So what, someone making an AMV is obviously a weeaboo? Stop being such a dumbass and be happy that other people have good taste in music. (Not to mention making music videos from things that aren't teenpop/Linkin Park).

134 - LOLOLOL HEARTS AT YOU. GENIUS WIN _b

148 - Thank you. I also personally think that if you take a stand against something, even if it's small, you're actually MORE likely to be doing something about several important issues at the same time. It's the people who go 'Oh shut up, [this] is more important' who sit on their asses and don't take a stand about anything at all.

I don't really think that whining about sexism in popular culture is taking any kind of "stand" against anything, because you aren't changing other people's attitudes and ideas towards issues of sex and gender, or the patriarchal society we live in).
