Ha! Oh, yeah. We can be a DAMN elite lot.

But... honestly? As someone who has read the comics and all that jazz? I adore them in the movie too. Those actors brought so much more to the characters than ANY writer or artists has so far.

And both have influenced how they're being drawn these days, so really, you're ahead of the curve.

ALL fandoms are at least half about how others are doing it wrong and how you are the only one doing it right.

The best fans are just those that can STFU about it rather than keep going on and on.

101. I don't hate fandom as a whole, there are things I like about it (or, obviously, I wouldn't be in it), but you have listed several things I hate about fandom. For example, I *HATE* Fandom_Wank, and the very, very little I've seen of Encyclopedia Dramatic was so full of stupid it almost killed me... I like the funny pictures and LOLcats friends link me from 4chan, but I've never been to the site proper and am pretty scared to go... There's a lot of memes and new fandom words that I don't understand, and, I used to like badfic sporking, but now I hate it and avoid sites and people who are really into doing it... Oh, and I hate porn. I know, *gasp!* I'm a heretic! Yeah, I hate a lot that "fandom" has to offer, but the things I like keep me here - still, I think you have a point. (if anyone flames or trolls me for this, I'm gonna talk about waffles or something).

108. I LOVE YOU. Thank you very much. I feel exactly the same way. It feels weird... and lonely sometimes.

114. I have a set of the "old" versions, never read the new, edited versions. Narnia's just not *right* without the religious subtext. Lewis wanted it to be there. I don't care if the poor, impressionable children modern world "can't handle it." Almost like reading the Bible "without the religious subtext." (Again, if I'm flamed, it's waffles).

123. Nice image! I'm going to be 29 in less than a month. I feel the same way. I'm too old to be 12, but I don't wanna "grow up."

124. Some years ago, I wrote something that technically would qualify as a "rapefic" (I mean, there was a character who suffered it in the story). I didn't describe all the details and I never labeled it as a "romance" - it was a horror story, and said happenings in the story were portrayed as horror and the victim suffered emotional scars. People thanked me for that story. Be assured that with this fanficcer - it's the only *kind* of "rapefic" I will ever write.

154: *Can't stop laughing*

[identity profile] elfinpiper.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
114. Hard to escape it. That’s what the books were written for.

123. I know plenty of fans older than you. Don’t worry.

131. *ignores the secret and gushes over pretty Kenshin cosplay*

133. Snape is awesome. He’s a greedy, judgmental, arrogant person in many ways. I find him loathsome. Which is why I like him.

107, 108

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
107. Augh, come on. You think hating on the P3 fandom's whipping post makes you out of sync? If I had a nickel for every time someone dumped on Yukari for something the male cast did just as much of and ignores her own character development, I'd be rich.

108. See, I like slash and het (and yuri) and either side annoys me equally with "ew teh gay" and "ew teh girls". I make a point of only befriending people who see the forest through the trees, so to speak. (In other words, "girls suck" is just as offensive to me as "gays suck", no matter what bullshit pseudo-justifications the statement is qualified with.)

124. Eh, I know rape survivors who write/enjoy rape fic. Agreed that it should be treated as traumatizing/awful, though, even if there is a sexual motivation behind writing it.

#124:

[identity profile] lejic.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
124. *sigh* People deal with things differently. So if you came across a racist fic, even if the racism was subtle (ex: almost every black sitcom character being not-so-smart comic-relief characters) you might take offense if you had been effected by racism in the past.

You know what is so amazingly awesome about the internet though?

You can, like, NOT go to those places and NOT read that stuff.

The tubegirl exists, that's pretty gross but you know what I do to save myself? I don't go looking for it.

I'm not saying all this to be mean, I'm saying this to save you, honestly. There's so much shit over the internet and you need to stop being butt-hurt when you don't like things. The world is not, indeed, a grand conspiracy against you.

For your info; I was raped and molested for years since I was a little kid and couldn't tell anyone because it was a relative. It finally stopped years later but I'm aware that it has effected me.

I read rape/abuse fic. It doesn't "hurt" me. Hell, some of them are even hot. Just because YOU can't deal with it in that way doesn't mean that others can't.

134. I am proud (or possibly ashamed) to admit that, although I have not read the Empire trilogy--yet--I have read the Riftwar saga and thus knew who Shimone and the Shinzawai are. And that I feel like I am just as much of a dork as you are.

Seriously? I had that exact same thought when I was 21. That was 7 years and 6 months ago. :)

Fandom's really changed over the years, but I still lurk around fandoms occassionally delurking if I have a genuine question that I figured fandom can answer for me (since I tend to have less free time to think / obsess about it as much... sigh life.). I agree to disagree when opinions differ by simply not trying to be a ass about it if my views don't get through. (Not that I have ever, I think ... I dunno, back in my era mama never brought me up to be rude to strangers that we can't see. Really, the internet only really took off here when I hit 17...)

There is one bad thing about being older in fandom, as you will soon realise, is that you can't bring yourself into the wank (even if it seems fun enough and you have sufficent ammo to give people a run for your money), simply because you feel like everybody on the other side of the internet is half your age, and you'd either feel extremely silly and get mocked by your peers till kingdom come for declaring wank-war with a junior, or an utter douchebag for being one of those school bullies back in high school for picking on someone who doesn't know better. It's a lost cause even if you win the wank, so yeah, you're sunk in fandom far as arguing over fictional characters goes, rotfl. XD

The good thing about being old and being in fandom is that I can claim I understand young people and their fandoms and actually mean and live it. Strangely, I always did figured this might happen a young man lady...

Too big

101. You can leave if you hate it so much, and I really hope you weren't serious about how it's killing your sister. Fandom should never become important enough to destroy someone; it's not World of Warcraft. Hopefully she can break out of it.

108. Fandom is not totally comprised of slash. It's a big part of it because most of us are genuinely into slash, and fandom is a place where that is accepted and even encouraged. But I think the majority of shippers in fandom are at least neutral towards het, probably having a few het pairings of their own. Sucks that you have to deal with the more diehard slash fans; they sound like they're ruining your party.

111. Just a little.

115. What if you fell in love with a really good cosplayer? What would that be?

123. Keep going! You have seniority; use it wisely.

124. You're clumping together all the authors who write rape scenes, both those who write it as a fantasy and those who write it as rape--in other words, the hell you described. Maybe you've just come across the fantasy types, but one is not the other.

125. Ditto.

145. Hey, I've learned a lot from Whose Line fanfiction. Reading any sort of literature--classic or fanfic--is therapeutic.

153. But the biggest question is: mask on or mask off?

155. Nope.

123,124

[identity profile] shadsie.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
123: What if you have "senority," but nobody really cares what you have to say? (That's where I am). I have no age-given authority, I'm just here, and sometimes mocked, often ignored. Fandom cares not for age. I've known people who were older than I am (I'm on the threshold of 29) who were MUCH more wanky and immature than I am. On the Internet, everyone is 12.

124: Sounds like the OP is talking about the former. I've actually written the latter, myself, once, as I said in my main body reply. They're two different things.

111. Goodfic? Where? Please point me in the right direction because all I've read is shit. :(

126. Word. Akuroku is popular for a reason, and not just because they're hot or whatever the reasons are. AU's are a good excuse to do whatever the hell you want with the setting and certain circumstances. I mean, there's such thing as too far, but until it gets there, leave the AU fans alone. And the Disney-neglect... sure, I love Disney, I always have. But in the games, the only important Disney character was King Mickey (to the best of my memory, anyway) and the worlds aren't the main focus, really. It just doesn't stick out as much.

Sorry for the rambling, heh.

Going to start off with what I'm sure everyone else has already said, since I'm super-late to the game here. I'm sorry you had such a horrific experience, people are horribly immature and probably aren't thinking before they insult and Fantasy =/= Reality.

Now, taking off the fanhat, I understand what the OP means in terms of language, but I also understand what the language means. Rape is rape - it's horrific and messy and definitely not sexual. Non-con means that the focus of the story in question is on the generic and wide-spread fantasy of having sex forced on the owner of said fantasy in such a way that they do not have to take responsibility for enjoying it. That's what rape-fantasy is all about at it's core for most people.

The only reason I'm replying to this is because I think that people need to own up to the fact that what they fantasize about may not be healthy if they attempted to live it, but that doesn't make the fantasy itself unhealthy or wrong. Fantasy is how we deal with many, many personal issues. We use it to explore feelings we're uncomfortable with or to get a grip on aspects of our real-world lives that we have no control over. By digging through this stuff in the safe, absolutely private area of our thoughts, we somehow cope. No fantasy, however immoral in the real world, is wrong in and of itself. I could hypothesize about how the idea of "thought = action" in religion has affected this, but I think that might start more wank. :)

For those who think it's wrong/sick/disgusting/etc... Well, that's your opinion, and you're welcome to it. But please do realize that you're only perpetuating a damaging sense of shame and guilt around female sexuality that has done nothing but harm. Go ahead and look up studies if you must, but you'll find that rape-fantasy is normal, healthy and not actually related to rape-reality.

I feel the same way. I don't write fic in my favorite fandom because when I first starting looking at comms on LJ, there was a friending meme going around and I was startled to realize that most of the fandom is teenage girls. I'm 36 and male, and just don't want to think about 15 year old girls reading my slash fic.
