124. seriously seriously SERIOUSLY. I don't understand the fascination with rape in fandom. I understand that some people have rape fantasies and whatever, but it's so pervasively glorified in fandom it just... blows my mind. I do my best to avoid it, but god it is EVERYWHERE. Uggghhh.

First, I'd like to second the question others have been asking: How is fandom "killing" your sister? I really hope you don't mean it literally. DX

That said, I have to agree with you to a certain extent. I like fandom, but I'm mostly a lurker and not an active contributor for a number of reasons. I will admit there are many aspects of fandom I hate -- fandom_wank, ED, and 4chan ESPECIALLY -- and the mentality of the people that typically make and enjoy those places (no offense to anyone who does -- I don't mean to overgeneralize). I just stay away from those places, hit the back button when I encounter it, and look at the comms, fanfic and art I do like, or at the very least where the more mean-spirited fans don't hang out.

She is mentally impaired, and her fandom is more important then taking care of herself. Her brain chemistry is out of wack, and she recently has developed an addiction to both caffeine ( so she can stay up later to RP and watch anime, and play games, ect... ) and sleeping pills, because she can't go to sleep without them because of the amount of caffeine that is constantly in her system.
She's manic depressive and slightly autistic, 22 years old, and with all the help of my parents and I she still are unable to help her become stable again because, like I said, fandom is more important.

THANK YOU. I agree. I took extensive women's studies and gender studies course in college and came to the conclusion that sexism in entertainment, the media, even politics are just the symptoms of a larger underlying problem that isn't being addressed. The devaluation of women is rampant in society in general, it's only reflected in the entertainment we consume. So there's no point in RAGING at the sexism you see in cartoons. And 10 to 1 the person RAGING isn't doing anything to combat sexism in any other aspect of their life, besides bitching about it. (Which really doesn't do a lot of good unless you bitch at the right people.)

tl;dr I agree with you, you are awesome. These people aren't seeing the forest for the trees.

Good for you for not getting sucked into the mainstream then. :> Though it'd be nice if you kept in mind that not all us slash fans are so absorbed in the 'omg boi luv' that we completely ignore females of whatever series we happen to be pairing male characters in, or have biased opinions as to their role in the whole relationship, whether they be brainless fangirls of the pairing or be completely disgusted and opposed about it. I know the people you meet in fandom can make lasting impressions on you and forge your idea of the consensus of the rest of that fandom, but please be aware that there are always expections. There are just as many slash fans that love female characters. I myself am a part of a few fandoms where the only characters I like are the women, and see no appeal in slashing the men, nor am I even interested in some of the male characters (Hellsing is my best example. Seras, Rip Van Winkle, and Integra >>> everyone else in Hellsing).

119. Kurogane/Syaoran gets in the way of Kurogane/Fai, what other reason can there be? There's no harm in shipping something different, and doing so isn't going to take anything away from the universally accepted ships in the fandom. Besides, there's no rule that says a character can only be shipped with one other character. :)

I actually hope a lot of the people in their 20s now would stay active in fandom when they're older. It pisses me off how many rabid, stupid teenagers there are. I'm not saying all adult fans are better than that, but some actually take things in an adult manner — with real logic and all that! :O

It's really kind of sad that fandom finds it necessary to categorize "older fans" and "younger fans". Aren't we all just, oh, I don't know ... fans? Regardless of age? I always thought so, but hey, maybe my logic is ass backwards.
