109) You are gay with an exception. Plenty of people are straight with an exception (or three). Personally, I wouldn't call you bisexual unless you were attracted to men at least 25% of the time. Bisexuals gotta have standards.

114) I think fanfiction is a way for people who are inspired by the show to share their ideas with other fans. It helps to think of fanfic as not being "more" of canon, but rather "complimenting" canon -- filling in all the places that canon didn't, couldn't and shouldn't go.

117) I solved the problem by not reading Rose or Martha fic. I'm looking forward to seeing who the next fan is.

120) The Anime was much more about who the characters are, and a lot less about what they do, and the plot was rather secondary to the characters emotional states. The manga is much more straight up plot oriented shonen-style, where relationships are put on the back burner, and everyone concentrates on solving the intractable problem. I like both, but I like them both for different reasons. I can understand how someone who is more into exploring interpersonal relationships and character interaction would prefer the anime. However, from the point of view of a powerful story and plot, the manga whoops ass.

Ultimately, the manga is a well written story targeted to the things that excite and appeal to boys, if shonen style doesn't float your boat, then it's not for you.

126) I like beards, too.

133) Boggling -- those graphic novels will become classics, remembered for generations. Twilight ... not so much.

160) You can be a fan without being crazy and creepy. Chill.

106) You'd be surprised about the sheer amount of people who love Hobo-tan

131) You and me both.

132) I thought he was? Last I heard that was a photoshopped picture...

145) I think everyone to an extent has to do that though, OP. There a lot of times, you just have to not say the right things sometimes and you kind of have to keep mum about how you really feel, I mean if I'm reading this right, then you really shouldn't worry so hard about it. ack, I'm sure this is coming out all wrong...D:

No, the secret's true. That shot of Naoto isn't a manip. D:

The photoshopped image you're referring to might be the MC/Yousuke one. I lurk too much on the GFAQs boards...

102. ... Why, exactly?

106. kjasfhksajhf HAVE YOU SEEN THE REACTIONS TO HIS DEATH ONLINE. You are not alone, bb, you are not alone. ;_;

109. askhfkufsjas this comes up a lot, it seems. Being attracted to a fictional character, even if he's played by a real actor, does not actually determine your sexuality. Being attracted to a real guy who's a star? Maybe. I don't see what's so wrong about being bisexual- you might have very, very vague bisexual tendencies, have a heavy leaning towards women but some men can do it for you. It wouldn't be too surprising or too big a deal. Most people aren't on the very extremest ends of the Kinsey scale anyway. :/

111. Umm... I don't get the problem with this at all. Can't someone acknowledge that being pretty/attractive/beautiful/sexy/wtfever is a part of them as much as anything else? And I don't get why they should only cater to their straight female (and... gay male?) fans, if that's what you're saying, and ignore their straight male and lesbian fans? IDK WHAT THIS MEANS OOF.

112. O-oh man that thing is epic fun. I NEED TO LEARN HOW TO DO THAT SHIT. LIKE FUCKALOT. ♥

113. I have to agree with this if only because I love DDR, it's fun, I am decent at it, and I get a workout! Whereas I fail so hardcore at Guitar Hero that I make the little plastic guitar thing cry at being so utterly misused. XD

114. ... I don't see why fulfilling fantasies is such a bad thing anyway? ?_? Everyone IS in this just for fun, right?

117. IAWTS SO HARD. SO GODDAMN HARD except for the fact that I don't think any fan could make me dislike any part of the actual canon. Just anything fandom-related for them. ;; THAT SAID, THIS IS WHY I DON'T SET FOOT IN DOCTOR WHO FANDOM. Holyyyyyyyy shit. I would like to be allowed to like all the wimminz and all the men and all the goddamn Doctors without feeling like I need to hate at least one person and preferably more to be a proper fan. >[

120. I like the manga, but am not OMG IN LOVE WITH IT. I think it handled some things better and parts of the plot made more sense overall- Maria getting accused of the murder of Maes Hughes is the biggest thing that springs to mind- but the anime will always be my love of the two. :>

123. Why can't it be all of the above? The people I'm friends with discuss things. We love creating and storytelling and everything like that. We love coming up with theories and trying to make things work in a cohesive way. I love characters for both their designs and their personalities, and squeal over characters, particularly cool scenes, and story arcs. I don't see the problem with any of them. In the end, we're in fandom to have fun. Some of us find our fun in more serious ways, and some of us find it in fluff, or porn, or wtfever. Some of us find it in all of the above!

Less tl;dr fandom can be both enlightening/provoking and entertaining/titilating, and neither is the more valid way of being in fandom. You aren't better than anyone just because you only like the former. People are on this planet to enjoy themselves and help other people enjoy themselves and not be unhappy as best as possible, and you're seriously coming across as being disgusted by the fact that people are having fun in a way you don't particularly like.

128. I honestly didn't know The Golden Compass had an original UK title! =O Slow reader is slow. It's cool! I do agree that Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is much cooler and makes a lot more sense, though.

133. O-o-ouch. If someone dismisses an entire genre in the first place I feel they're being needlessly harsh; if you mean they're actually dismissing all English graphic novels in general, they're not just dismissing a genre, but an entire storytelling medium and aksjfhakfjasfklasf. HOW DOES THAT EVEN WORK SERIOUSLY. I feel for you. D:

138. I think a lot of people can relate. XD This secret made me laugh a lot, though!

144. That is, hands down, one of the greatest music videos ever made. XDDDDDDD GO GO WALKEN. YOU... FUNKY MAN.

148. Random ship is random and kind of amazing. XD

151. Not even touching this with a ten foot pole. Just saying: Kairi seems like she is stronger than you're giving her credit for. And holding out faith isn't always a bad thing.

153. I think this one is a repost!

155. ... Is it absolutely necessary to compare them?

156. OH MAN I will love both so much. *^* SO, SO FUCKING MUCH. YES.

160. Goddammit why are all of you people coming out of the woodwork. IN THE FANDOM COMMUNITY, THE WORD "FAN" HAS CHANGED. IT MEANS SOMEONE WHO LIKES SOMETHING. I AM A FUCKING FAN UNDER THAT DEFINITION. And I think anyone who uses the word "Muggle" about other people in order to feel special is a bit of an idiot.

134, Jumping Jack Flash secret! I haven't seen that movie in years. I remember what great chemistry those two had throughout the movie, and they didn't even meet until the final scene.

147, the good thing about your secret is that no one else's gonna fight you for a piece of that. It's all yours, as the kids say.

Such fears are understandable.

Remember that no work of art can be all things to everyone and some people are always going to be rude about things they dislike. Do your best to create a story that meets your standards of good writing. Constructive feedback from trusted people will help refine your work and bolster your confidence when they can't find much to criticize.

As a writer myself, I consider interest from my intended audience to be far more important than possible mud slinging from the asshat peanut gallery.

Gotta love Adina.

101. It's not hard to handle it better than Kishimoto does.

106. Bawwwww Shinji. I knew he was going to die and it still broke my heart. But his line at the end, during the final, final battle? MADE EVERYTHING WORTH IT.

113. Despite both being rhythm games, they're both very different sorts of games... they're hard to compare, really. I love them both - after I'm exhausted and can't dance anymore, I sit down and play Guitar Hero! XD IT works out perfectly!

114. And not-fanfiction can't murder its own subtext and fulfill cliche fantasies? FAIL.

123. So you can't do both? Fuck, get off your elitist high horse and let people have fun. Fandom can and does 'enlighten and provoke' and 'entertain and titillate' in the same breath. See: ship manifestos. XD I've written porn AND analytical rambles, gasp!

128. What got me is that in the Canadian editions, they kept the UK title for the Philosopher's Stone but went with the 'The Golden Compass' for the other book. Consistency: we do not have it in our measurement, our spelling, or our children's literature, apparently.

132. 1 - you're spoiling me for a game I can't even flipping play yet - 2 - the mention of genderbending makes me want to play it like burning. AGH.

140. THIS.

149. I don't know who the guy on the left is, but I lol'd.

123 where have you been?

I feel that my particular fandom has a complicated and intelligent mythology.
Since you talk about stories... I wonder have you read Ishmael?

I wish there was a way we could converse about it. I guess the reassurance that someone else feels the way you do will have to be enough.

[identity profile] eibborn.livejournal.com 2008-07-19 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
151. I agree that they wasted an opportunity for a good, interesting character, but Kairi does have flaws. You listed a few of them.

(Anonymous) 2008-07-19 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
But those flaws the OP came up with weren't personality flaws, but flaws in the writing. It's not like she chooses to sit around; that's the role she is forced into and because of that we can't see her hidden potential.

129

[identity profile] neko-nny-okibi.livejournal.com 2008-07-19 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
I was absolutely in love/infatuated with Brian Littrell as a young girl. XD BBS was my favorite band, and Brian was by far my favorite when it came to looks, vocals, everything. Even had pics of him beside my bed. "That's What She Said" is on my iPod for cryin' out loud. Being a Christian I was pleased to find out he went solo in that genre - even if I've yet to get the album - mostly because I'm glad to know he's still making music at all. His voice is just so gorgeous and soothing.

[identity profile] urplesquirrel.livejournal.com 2008-07-19 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
109. I have a friend who's a lesbian. She's married to a man. He is the only exception to her lesbianism. She calls herself Otis-sexual. Finding one man attractive doesn't mean you're actually bisexual, it just means that the man is hot enough to overcome your usual preferences.

120. The reason I like manga!Winry better is cause I'm a backstory whore. The more backstory a character has, the more I'm able to relate to them. In the anime, her history is hardly touched on. In the manga, there's a lot more to work with. Easier to come up with fanfic.

Also, the anime's ending was unsatisfying, and the movie sucked (though the animation and the soundtrack were beautiful).

128. I can see where you're coming from, but I like the Golden Compass better as a title because it fits so nicely with its two sequels. The Golden Compass, the Subtle Knife, the Amber Spyglass. I like titles that fit together, and always try to use them myself. Northern Lights, the Subtle Knife, and the Amber Spyglass doesn't appeal to me as much. *sings* One of these things is not like the others!

But Philosopher's Stone to Sorceror's Stone pissed me off, and not just because I have always been fascinated by alchemy. I did a research paper on Nicholas Flamel in sixth grade. It's like... "Kids are scared by big words! Let's dumb it down!"

155. I haven't watched or read any of Bleach - but Ken, both as a character and a villian, pwns everyone. He has so much depth and so much strength, and I remember being stunned when I was eleven and watching the season finale of 02, because of the way he still carried the burden of his crimes in his heart. His friends had forgiven him, the digimon had forgiven him, but he had not forgiven himself. Everyone else got their greatest wish fulfilled by the illusion - but his greatest wish was to be killed for his crimes. Even in the dub version, this rang true to me, and it really affected me. I defy any anime to affect me as strongly as Digimon did.

164. Most people's first books are going to stink. The difference with Eragon and Twilight is that these books stink, but they've gotten a lot of popularity right off the bat and legions of crazy fans who think that they're the definition of good writing. Don't worry about it not being good, worry about not being able to accept that it's not good. As long as you don't get so caught up in your fame that you forget that there's always going to be something you can do better, you'll be fine.

(Anonymous) 2008-07-19 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
In that case your friend must be bisexual.

Whoa, I'm so late. :(

109: If you mean Captain Jack the character, he's supposed to have that effect on everybody, plus he's fictional, so I wouldn't worry about it. If you mean John Barrowman in the role of Captain Jack, then Kinsey 5 is not a bad place to be, and you can identify it as bi or gay as you see fit.

114: Freudian WTF!?! Also, I think your definition of 'subtext' is different from mine.

117: Speaking as someone who still ships Four/Sarah Jane, IAWTS. The Who-fandom has room for many, many ships, and no ship at all. Everybody take a deep breath and learn to get along. Your shipwars make One cry.

122: Someone else beat me to it, but have you considered a tattoo?

123: Speaking as someone who enjoys both a deep intellectual discussion complete with references to Joseph Campbell and Marshall McLuhan *and* a bout of squeeing, I suspect you're just looking in the wrong places. The former is, IME, more common in face-to-face fandom. Have you tried going to your local SF/Fantasy conventions and going to the more literary panel discussions?

126: Huzzah the chin-fuzz! I particularly enjoyed Boromir, Faramir, and Eomer's facial hair, myself.

134: Jumpin' Jack Flash secret FTW! (It was a sweet ending, wasn't it?)

140: I use the Myers-Briggs, but I do that, too. *is embarrassed*

He's not even that handsome. I think he is okay looking at times but his emo!face creeps me out. Also, looks really shouldn't be the reason why one watches a show but whatever.
I just don't get why anybody would find him that attractive. Than again, I also think that Captain Jack isn't the sexy and I must be the only person in the world who thinks so.

128, tb!1

[identity profile] alenxa.livejournal.com 2008-07-19 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
128: I just wish people would stop screaming about there being different titles in the first place. Have they ever looked at prolific character actors' pages on IMDb and seen how many different titles movies have in other countries? It's not a personal insult, folks. It's just media.

tb!1: Thank you. I'm also discouraged by the squee wars, and equally by the disturbing tendency of fandoms these days to turn on their source material for not being what the fandom wants it to be. However, I think both are products of the demographics of online fandom, i.e. its skew toward youth. Fandom that's not online (or heck, isn't LJ) has a little less mindless squee and a little less vitriol, and tends to be much more aware of the need to respect the story. (In some cases, it seems like the fans are the only ones who do...)

If that makes you feel any better, I read an article on Lesbilicious which stated that an astonishing percentage of lesbians are occasionally attracted to men, at certain times in their lives or as an exception. I believe sexuality is pretty fluid, tbh. :)

134 - "Where are you, Jack?"
"Two rows back on the left."
That is a great ending. Now I wish there was a fandom too.

144 - Best secret I've seen in a while.

109: You fancy one bloke. This is like straight people getting all weirded out because they once ever fancy one person of the same sex. One bloke out of how many women? As far as I'm concerned, on balance, you're still a lesbian.

117. I can't stand either one of them, lol. I occasionally consider writing crackfemmeslash of them to be annoying.

126. Well one of the featurettes has Aragorn and Pippin snogging, so that makes sense.

133. There's nothing you can do for that person. They have no taste.

147. Dude, the gun is good and what do we say about that other thing?

150. Yeah, but you could have had Ayame. Actually, now I think about it I'd love Ayame for an old brother.

169. My head is full of dialogue now because of you.

173. Here are your internets what you have won.
