125. A-fucking-men on that one. I feel saddened and dismayed when confronted with modern vampire lit, because so much of it sucks. (The individual clan book resources for Vampire: the Masquerade were about ten times more interesting than Rice's vampire books, and they're bogged down with game mechanics!)

139. I get where you're coming from on the WWII part, but...aren't these characters supposed to be individual people in addition to being the personifications of countries? If so, then I don't see why the HO YAY would be a big gripe. Being gay would just be one part of their personhoods.

141. Keep an eye out for your friend. Comparing her boyfriend's personality to that of an obsessive and abusive vampire stalker isn't the highest recommendation of his character. Watch for signs of abuse and be ready to step in or else call for help from others.

[identity profile] katmaxwell.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
re: 139 -- They're actually the personifications of the countries; which is why the "being gay" falls flat for me -- because countries' relationships are supposed to be reflected in their interactions with each other. The whole reason Italy and Germany are "gay" is because they were allied together, and have a longstanding history, etc., etc. Alliances often = marriages, colonies = little brothers/children... and more.

101) Apples and oranges. One isn't intrinsically better than the other, any more than art isn't better than literature.

110) You probably wouldn't want Wesley. He's stalkery obsessive, plays cruel mind games, and is completely unreasonable in his expectations both for himself and his bride. Sure he looks pretty on film, but to actually have to live with that would be the very definition of hell. Yay, fantasy!

109) Is this person worth that much thought and effort? Really?

115) Wow. You stole a customer's candy? What are you, six? What a retarded thing to potentially lose a job over.

117) Why? He's pretty much the same Rodney as every other season. Is it because he has a love interest (again?)

136) Again why? I can't see why these episodes would ruin a show for you. They were quite well done. Is it the religious implications? Or the fact that the guys have explicit het love interests.

137) And no one should make you feel like you should. We all got those lines where we just can't pass. Mine is RPS. Doesn't matter if it's outstandingly written, it's a squick.

147) Reading manga won't give you cooties.

157) Practice, study, work on your writing. If being an important writer for your fandom is important, study writing, look at techniques, try to understand why people like certain pairings. And write.

160) OUCH. Well, at least it wasn't a chili pepper, but seriously, ouch. Ginger is a pretty powerful irritant.

(Anonymous) 2008-12-01 09:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. These guys are so full of shit. And the worst part is, they get more attention even if their cosplays are mediocre just cuz they're guys and have a good figure. I mean if they do it for a passion that's fine, whatever, but the worst is when they do it for the "chicks". They could at least not be so obvious about it.

107. The East Coast is certainly not anything like Hogwarts. Move to Scotland to get that feeling.

134. Just to be the devil's advocate here (since I also hate those smashed together fiction "covers"), there are a shit ton of actual romance novels with cover art just as crappy.

134

[identity profile] sidewinder.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Scifi/fantasy books, too. Oh god, some of the shit photoshopped and bad digital art covers out there. It's enough to make this old-fashioned artist here weep.

[identity profile] katmaxwell.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
I am pretty positive there are a total of no comics where the express purpose is To Laugh at World War II. Making fun of Italy's perceived "weakness"? Yes. Turning Germany's annexation of Austria into an awkward conversation where Austria ends up making Germany make him sandwiches? Yes.

But there are no "lol people died!!!" comics. If you're saying the problem is that the comic only addresses the "lighter sides" of WWII (that is, instances where the military did interesting things or what-have-you), then please go watch Hogan's Heroes.

Also, Austria and Hungary are straight o noes so I guess it's okay if I ship them~ No, seriously. The relationships in Hetalia are based off of alliances, colonies, etc. Sweden calls Finland his wife because of history -- not because Sweden likes the penis. Finland just happens to be personified as a guy. Yes, obviously, it appeals to BL fangirls -- but regardless of the gender of the country, there would be slash of some sort at some point.

Okay, I don't follow this series at all, and have been skipping over the discussion about it, but your icon made me stop and read. And laugh. Lots. In the last 6 months, I've moved from the US to Sweden, and my fiancé and roommates like to give me little crash courses in Swedish history.

And now I will never be able to think of Sweden and Finland in the same way. By the way, what's the relationship between Sweden and Denmark?

101) Protip: When making sweeping generalizations about the intelligence of a subset of hobbyists that don't share your preferences, you'll look more confident in your ascertainment if you don't make the mistake of showing your own stupidity in the process.

106) I don't think that's weird at all when I consider the exploits of some fans towards actors. Hell, I fully admit that I'd love to meet Tommy Chong and Cheech Marin for a few drinks and a discussion about pot legalization in the US.

107) Trust me, there's nothing magical or happy about slowly freezing your harbls off here on the East Coast. Then again, if you live here for more than a year, you'll probably be begging to go back to someplace warm.

139) I'm sorry you feel that way, but insulting what you don't like just because you don't like it is just rude and dismissive. Why should you even care what other people like as long as it doesn't interfere with your enjoyment? And before you start, no, it doesn't. Fandom is big enough for all tastes and genres. Kindly move on for your own sake, if no one else's.

147) Dear lord, your insecurity is sad. If you like manga, you like manga. Don't let other people tell you what you should like or not like because they might call you a racist, childish name only suitable for 4chan; just like it. Just don't turn into one of those fans who likes to evangelize what you like because those people are just assholes.

155) Me too. Me too. Hell, why is this a secret? It's too awesome to be a secret. Everyone needs a Ms. Frizzle in their lives.

101

[identity profile] mondaisenshi.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
In theory, I could agree. Except that I'm a painfully slow reader. It's got nothing to do with how smart I am, it's got to do with how my mind reacts when I'm bored. Because the slightest bit of boredom and I just end up distracting myself.

So, no, I don't prefer comics to books. But I read comics more easily. And, I believe, I read them more often. But I'm a very visual person. If I don't have images, I make them. Not pictures of faces or scenes being described in the book, though. I tend to visualize shapes and patterns. And when I'm bored, that's where my mind goes, and I can't focus, anymore.

125

[identity profile] anogete.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
125 - Oh, goodness. I beg to differ, though I'm sure I won't be the only one. I will easily concede that Twilight is hardly a good vampire story, but there are many, many others out there in all forms of media (books, movies, TV show) that are outstanding. It's just become hip for people to say, "Oh, there hasn't been any good vampire fiction since Dracula." That way no one can argue with you on the merits of other vampire stories like The Vampire Chronicles or Tale of the Vampire or The Wisdom of Crocodiles or even something new like Let the Right One In. Don't play the safe card; go out and actually trying to find one of the fantastic pieces instead of bitching about Twilight over and over again. Everyone wants to be a hater nowadays. Sheesh.

101: agreed, agreed agreed, I get that Manga, Comics and Graphic novels are pretty but I've never found a picture that can outdo the imagery summoned in your own mind's eye by a really great book. and no; Twilight doesn't count.
150: who let the BNP into F!S?!
117: whilst I'm no jennifer/rodney fan episodes like the Shrine, First Contact and The lost Tribe have made me love him even more.
138: If ever there was a woman who needed to rediscover trousers for her stage act, seriously.
143: I also Firmly believe that Owen and Sassoon were very likely in love with each other, it breaks my heart how tragic their story is.

[identity profile] continuum.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
101. But graphic novels aren't about the pretty. Nice artwork helps, yeah, but have you looked through Watchmen? Sandman? Y: The Last Man? V for Vendetta? Road To Perdition?

The story is what's brilliant and draws critical acclaim; I mean, Watchmen is an absolute classic that takes on issues of authority and subverts the entire notion of a superhero. Especially for its time, it's an absolutely amazing piece of work.

I dunno, I always feel like people who reject comic books are missing out on a whole section of awesome stories.

Every time I read something like 117 I immediately think, "So you don't like McKeller?" *sigh*

Look, I hate the pairing too. Not because I ship something else, because honestly I just think this show would be better off without romance (most shows would, in my opinion) - but because they don't make a good match. Because even if you think they DO make a good match, they aren't going to last. Because she likes him much more when he's 'McKay Light' than when he's just 'McKay', and the seventeen times she asked him to 'do this' or 'try not to do that' in order to not embarrass her in the first FIFTEEN MINUTES of 'Brain Storm' makes me think she doesn't care for him as is the way she should. If anything, she acts more like his big sister or babysitter than anything.

THAT BEING SAID, I can't stand to see people saying 'I hate Rodney this season'. Blah. You people make me lose faith in fandom. Rodney is NO different than he was ANY OTHER SEASON. He is the same old Rodney; if you liked him season one, you should like him now. The only time he's that 'different' is when he's with Keller, but from previous seasons we've seen that he's ALWAYS been that way with his girlfriends. If you have a problem with Rodney getting more screen time, than okay, I get it, this certainly wasn't -my- ideal way for the series to end either, but it's not Rodney's fault, he's a fucking fictional character, why are you blaming him? Blame the writers who have such a big hard on for the geek getting the girl that they've made this show all about him and his epic search for a women who will stand him (instead of spending time on all the characters like they SHOULD be doing). It's not poor Rodney's fault, the guy just wants to be loved! (And hell, doesn't think he can do better either. This IS Rodney we're talking about; he'll latch on to about anything you throw at him in that respect.)

Sheesh. Just because you don't like the amount of time he's been given or the person they've paired him with doesn't mean he's turned into (more of a) bastard.

101. I used to agree with this, actually. But that was because I didn’t have an understanding of what manga was. Then I read one, and while I didn’t like it, it changed my opinion. I still don’t like manga. It’s one of those things that I tried to get into, but just couldn’t. But I can no longer maintain the opinion that they’re somehow ‘dumber’ versions of novels.

117. Yeah. Pretty much.
