Seriously, there are so many more things to get offended over than freaking Hetalia. It's just a silly little comic that pokes fun at stereotypes and presents historical facts in a cute way. Am I going to cite it as a source for a resource paper any time soon? Hell no. But is it a nice distraction when I'm bored? Hell yes. Lighten up. So many other things have made fun of WWII (and other wars) in so many more offensive ways. Aim your efforts at the people who really deserve it.

[identity profile] seolearo.livejournal.com 2008-11-30 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL.

I like both. There's nothing wrong with graphic novels, OP. Nor does it make you stupid if you prefer those to books.

Take my brother - he has dyslexia and ADHD and is an artist, so he prefers to read graphic novels (they keep his attention, and otherwise just appeal more to him). Does that make him stupid? No, it doesn't. In fact, he is very intelligent.

My point: don't assume like that. It's rather foolish and makes you look it.

But I must say, I'm curious. If that's how you feel about the readers, then what do you think of the creators?

101.

(Anonymous) 2008-11-30 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It feels like you're mocking people who dedicate their time to making those things you consider people stupid for reading. Both have their own merits. Sure, reading books with only text (should, at least) make people better readers (Twilight? Really?), but just generalizing like that is pretty dumb in itself.

You might as well say people who watch movies are morons compared to people who read books. It depends on the content and person, really. Maybe some people who prefer to read manga are tired of reading textbooks, ya know?

[identity profile] emagehtni.livejournal.com 2008-11-30 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
101. That, or they like the different medium. *shrugs* Personally I don't prefer them, but I think it's silly to make assumptions on someone's intelligence based on what kind of medium they like their stories told in.

115's fandom tag is amazing.

And I love 116's "You are NOT the coolest thing since refrigerators" analogy.

128. Who doesn't?

133. I have to disagree; I thought Simba's Pride was amazing, and Toy Story 2 wasn't half bad itself.and HSM2 was faaaar superior than HSM3... not that I've seen them. >.>

147. I think it is possible, yes. My interpretation of 'weaboo' is the person who is absolutely obsessed with Japan and Japanese culture and inserting Japanese phrases into everyday speech. If you like a few series of manga and think Japan is cool, then no, I don't think that's weaboo material.

155. Oh man, it's a Magic School Bus secret. ♥

[identity profile] likespring.livejournal.com 2008-11-30 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
bb, be open with your HSM-watching self.

HSM2 was great. I like HSM3 for a lot of things -- although it didn't flow as well as the others, the song/dance sequences were amazing (hello, "I Want It All!" and oh, "The Boys Are Back") -- but yeah, I think HSM2 was better overall.

101. Well, that's a wanktastic statement. Your secret makes me think you're too stupid to understand personal preference. Also, not all comics and books are created equal. The Sandman series is worlds above any Danielle Steel novel. Watchmen is a masterpiece compared to any Stephen King book (granted, that's also reflecting my personal tastes, though many would agree with me). So get off your high horse. Your superiority complex is obnoxious.

125. I hated Dracula, but it's all about personal taste, really.

138. I don't get how people can make judgements about a person's worth or character based on one of their interests. It honestly baffles me. I have to assume it's just arrogance.

150. There are no black British people?! No wai!

Can we stop complaining about Twilight and all things related now. I don't mind if it something new to complain about but c'mon, guys. We know how much you hate it like 100000000000000000000000000000000000000 times now.

101. Or they prefer the pictures, man. Some people like visuals more. So sue them. It's old thinking anyway. And I say this as an avid manga fan and a lover of books.

103. Why would you want an manipulative, selfish asshole with too many problems to count, I wonder?

110. The true love "happily-ever-after" stuff is pretty overrated. A love that is unique to you and your partner is enough, trust me. But if you want a romance like theirs, it doesn't really exist like that.

133. I disagree with the Aladdian trilogy, Rescuers Down Under. But you're right somehow....

134. I lol'd hard because "ghetto novels" covers are made the exactly same way. I mean, I know it is to cut expenses but is it hard to find up-and-coming cover designers and newbies for these things? Ugly designed covers are fucking ugly and doesn't make me want to pick up to read the book although I would like to support a writer struggling to hit big.

138. Your respect isn't worth it, I say.

139. *sigh* war comedy != making fun of the actual war. Hetalia is more concerned of finding little known facts or factoids around the war and it's not ONLY about the WWs periods either. It's like an education manga that uses humor to make it palatable to digest the information. Not to say it can be offensive especially the stereotypes that makes part of the Nations' character, it isn't offensive in that light. Hell, Mighty Python and The History of the World, Part 1 were way more offensive in that area than Hetalia ever was (Spanish Inquisition, anyone?). You will not find anything in Hetalia that will go "LOL HOLOCAUST", it actually tries not to delve too much into dark matters like that and it does have serious strips dealing the darker things as well.

And even though people have been slashing countries before Hetalia, the countries in the manga are more like immortal avatars to the countries and they do have their own personalities midst the stereotypes and the slashing comes with the historical relationship between countries. Oh please, if it was full of het ships, no one would complain one bit, so come off it.

147. Yes, there is. Now stop worrying about it unless you're completely blinded and utterly obsessed with Japan.

154. Seriously, I think you need to quit it if you have no passion for it. It's one thing that Atticus inspired you into law and when things get rough and he's the character you draw strength on, and your case. Your life is your own, not what others dictate it because you're the one who has to live it. There is an off-chance that you'll grow to love it but if it causing you that much agony, I think you should think it over, even if it's going against your parents (although you're old enough to say no to them). I know how hard it could be because I was in your shoes when I was in college and studying psychology. Your parents will be pissed, but they'll prolly come around someday. Nothing is worse waking up at 40 and realized out basically spent half of your life doing something you hated. Plus this isn't an easy career, it will take a lot of you to do well.

155. This. I really wanted this. Ms. Fritz was the most awesome fictional teacher ever.

160. CAN'T UNREAD/UNSEE, DAMMIT.

139

(Anonymous) 2008-12-01 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh please, if it was full of het ships, no one would complain one bit, so come off it."

...As a het fan and history junkie who was going to look up Hetalia too see what the fuss was about, I've feel like I've lost interest partly because of stuck up, "bawwww yaoi is picked on by those prejudiced evil het fans baaaaw" pricks like you that probably are all over that fandom. So thank you, and kindly stfu. I doubt if it was full of hetro ships Hetalia would escape all the accusations of it being offensive. Isn't the main issue about misleading historical facts and making light of atrocities anyhow?

101. Just because someone enjoys graphic novels more doesn't mean they don't have the capacity to understand "actual books". Perhaps sometimes people just prefer an easier read.

125. Well, nothing will ever beat Dracula. But some vampire books are still pretty enjoyable. If you never give any a chance, how can you ever find them? (Twilight is definitely not one of them).

137. For me, it has nothing to do with being Jewish, I just can't read fic about people who slaughtered other human beings like that (not just Jews, but Slavs, Roma, Gays, Jevohah's Witnesses, Polish literati, ethnic Poles, the disabled, and anyone else who disagreed with them).

I have nothing against people who write them/enjoy reading them. They're just not my thing.

141. Ew, does he cut her brake cables?

101-Hmm. Wow, you're an idiot. In fact, I believe that there are many people, authors of big books that are considered great novels, that would also call you one. See, the pictures don't negate the intelligence of the graphic novel. Actually, they intensify the meaning. Just look at the last two chapters of Watchmen (the whole thing, in fact, voids your statement) and see how much the art and color of Gibbons and Higgins added to the story's quality.

132-I don't watch the show but that is the most adorable thing I have seen in awhile.

147-See, there is nothing annoying about liking a country because of what it produces; in fact, I'm sure that's one of the reasons to like it. When people, not like you, begin to think they are God's gift to that country because of the little words they picked up in some manga that is probably viewed as a horrible representation of the country, that's when it gets annoying.

I, in fact, love Japan because of both the contradicting elements of traditional vs modern culture and Hiro Nakamura (a fictional tv character).

Yatta, bitches.

150-I happen to find you not 'quintessentially' intelligent, secret maker. How about that?

159-Ohmygoodness'HouseofCox'. I am dead. You, secret creator, are a genius of words.

[identity profile] callmejude.livejournal.com 2008-11-30 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)

110. It's hard to find, but it's out there. I haven't found it yet, but my parents sure as hell have. Twenty-two years and still like dorky little newly-weds. XD

133. I can rarely bring myself to see any Disney sequels. Because I know they will not be as good as the first one. Period.

138. ...You know, I don't even quite know how to respond to that. And I don't even consider myself a fan (maybe of her music, but certainly not of her).

154. ♥ Atticus Finch!

159. I love the show for its medical genius, but I have fun with the shipping. :3 I don't see why it's such a big deal. Canon's boring, more often than not. And on that note...who is House "canonly with"? Because, umm...maybe I'm missing something, but his being a miserable lonely old cripple seems like one of the main points of the show. (I must admit that's one of the few crossover ships I'd look into, though. XD)

160. Fanfictions can do that at times. I will never be able to eat yogurt, carmel, apples or peaches without thinking of certain fandoms and smut fics. XDD

101. Yes, because any idiot could pick up a graphic novel like V for Vendetta or Maus and be too stupid to understand Twilight.

139. I like it for the history. No, it's not entirely accurate, but what representation of history is? It's something fun that I enjoy. But people have been poking fun at WWII long before Hetalia. For example, the Producers (that was 1968) and 1941 (1979). So Hetalia's most certainly not the first, and it's not "wrong" for Japan to be poking fun at history, anymore so than American media. We've done our fair share of shit, yes, even in WWII.
