103 - I like Tieria enough, but I don't see how he is the most likable character ever. He can really be a douche at times, and yeah, that appeals to me and a bunch of other people, but I can totally understand if someone didn't like that personality type.

170 - It frustrates me when people say things like that! There are definitely strong heroines out there. I find some people just don't even want to look at them because they're so absorbed in slash/yaoi, and the chicks ZOMGRUIN their OTP. (No offense to slash/yaoi fans, I like it too and know not all of us are like that. I've just encountered one too many who are.)

If you're not a Tieria fangirl, you don't have anything to look for in this fandom. Sad but true.

And yes, bitter anon is bitter.

141. Not to create epic!wank, but this sort of offends me. The actual murders happened near to where I live, and I know a lot of people (myself included) that were against that movie being made. It's not exactly a thing to get off to.

159. Dude, I still love Adventure so much. 02, too, if I can just ignore the WTFery of the epilogue. (Yamato becomes an astronaut? Huh?)

170. Katara is badass. Winry is awesome. That is all.

175. The psychological aspect is the only reason I can ship incest. I love psychology in a fucked up relationship.

159. Not just the epilogue, I'm pretty much against the entire world tour thing. Weren't the Digidestined "Chosen Children of Legend" or some such? Having every single person in the world with a partner just takes all the fun out of it, and that's pretty much what it seemed like...

Are you secretly my mom? Because that's all she ever talks about. About how they have great chemistry together, and she bets they're fuck buddies, and how they love each other.

I even wiki'd Rachel Maddow just to prove to her that she has a steady girlfriend who isn't that other lady, but she still thinks those two are going at it.

170. Agreed on all counts except...Sakura? No. In the hands of a competent writer she would have been, but sadly even though she improved post-timeskip, she absolutely does not qualify.

Re: 170

(Anonymous) 2008-12-13 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
No, no. You want not qualifying, Rukia does not qualify. Seriously, she spends HOW long being fairly weak and powerless? She even starts the series off as unable to defeat a hollow and needing a human's help, then she can't even get the transfer of half her energy right. She ends up being fairly dependent on Ichigo. I fail to see how THIS is a strong female character, whereas Sakura, who is actually a realistic character (especially since she's a young teenager), is weak.

103. Wow. Lighten up.

145. You too.

170. To be fair, even if American comics have strong women they also invented the "women in refrigerators" syndrome that tends to screw 'em over. :/ But that's the fault of the writers rather than the characters.

But otherwise, ditto. Especially because strength doesn't neccessarily equal asskicking prowess, it can also mean emotional strength, brains, level-headedness, etc.

170.

[identity profile] vivalanaomi.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a huge problem I have with the bashing of female characters. So often they're labeled as Mary Sues and are treated as if, somehow, Mary Sue is a creature that actually exists to crawl into otherwise good texts and seduce the precious woobie.

Rather than being characters underdeveloped due to weak writing.

101 Rod Serling pointed the way to television that was both high quality and entertaining. Everyone is still trying to come up to the bar he set, and only a few have accomplishe it. (And I agree, his delivery was amazing.)

104 In order to get a fandom, you need something that in some way appeals to fangirls, who are mostly 16-22, or older women who consume media as though they were 16-22. So good call on Sweringen not being hot enough. Bullock was, except fangirls are afraid of facial hair and most secondary sexual characteristics.

107 My pal Theo has a theory that all movie universes are actually part of the same gigantic universe, and therefore every character played by one actor is the same peron. So we arrived at the "Iron Man has fucked Spider Man" thing about ten minutes after the casting for Iron Man was announced. Welcome to the train!

112 Looking at the credits of the girls vs. the credits of the boys is almost as depressing as looking at the credits of Keira Knightley vs. Parminder Nagra (hey, ER again!) and just as telling about how much narrower the path is for actresses in Hollywood than for actors.

117 I agree. I've never found Mick hot, for one thing. But it's fanboys who determine rock band pecking orders, and rockist fanboys care about the blues more than soul.

146 I don't find that hypocritical at all, actually. I don't think those two ships are all that parallel, for lots of reasons.

148 Scotty is like, the totes awesome sauce.

162 Okay, LOOK: Perving on someone who you know is of age but is pretending to be younger is not pedo. That's just role playing. Jeez. Also, perving on someone who is young but who is being presented in the trappings of someone much older isn't pedo either--that's just responding to stimuli that have been knowingly manipulated.

104

(Anonymous) 2008-12-12 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)

Surely there are exceptions to this. Aren't comic book fandoms, for instance, usually dominated by young men?

Today? Today is awesome secrets day. Here we go!

101. I don't think I could ever love a woman who didn't love this series. Despite the fact that I can't watch it anymore because it still upsets me (yes, even after seeing every episode multiple times), I think it may have been one of the great brilliant acts in television history. I doubt anyone in Hollywood could write anything as trenchant as "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street," especially considering that Serling used to bang out drafts in a few days.

107. Columbia and Paramount have to reach an agreement. The Parker/Stark make-out movie could make eleventy trillion dollars.

109. Funny, because I think while outwardly Nine is way more gruff, Ten ends up being the bigger asshole overall. Ten uses people and tosses them off and generally thinks he knows best regardless of the situation, whereas Nine calls people stupid but really just wants to save them and keep them safe. But yeah, more Ten please, because I guess we can't go back to Nine in flashbacks or anything.

117. When it comes to the British Invasion, it goes as thus: Eric Burdon, then Pete Townshend, then everybody else. I like The Stones, but The Animals are where it's at.

140. Oh, wait, there's another thing that's awesome about Nine. Donna needs a man, and I can only imagine the crazy things which would have gone on inside that TARDIS if she had met him instead of Senor Floppy-Hair. (But mostly I just want CE to appear on the Catherine Tate Show.)

142. Me too! Kinda way too hard for someone who is so far out of the target audience. Well, I ship Sharpay/Ryan/Me, but that's just for daydreaming when I don't want to work.

148. Best secret ever? Aye. Best secret ever. (Me too, lad.)

161. The video for "Ricky" will make anyone take notice. Guy is actually in really good shape, and not bad to look at. The funny helps.

167. That woman can do anything. All her voices are great, and I wish she'd appear in more live action because, well, damn. Look at her.

[identity profile] batty-gal.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
130 - LOL Yes.

135 - Hey, I just took up knitting too! I suck at it, however.

149 - LOL

161 - Are you me? I found him smoking hot in that "Pentiums" video -- it's like the older he got the more attractive he became.

170 - There's rarely any strong female characters -- not that there's none.

[identity profile] ryuutchi.livejournal.com 2008-12-12 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's even particularly rare.

124. Oh gosh, the "Stop Having Fun Guys" crowd, huh? Yeah, I'll never really be able to compete with those sorts of people since I'm not that good, but...I think I enjoy it more when I've got a lot of variety and goofy stuff to play with. That's what the series is really about, isn't it? The ultra-serious crowd would probably have a better time with something like Tekken...

I left off at chapter 12 maybe over a month ago, and I still can't bring myself to continue reading. I think the problem is the characters...they aren't interesting.

108. Dude, I didn't know that the dude who played Iceman had a twin. Mind = Blown.

122. For some reason, I found it both hot and funny. God, I gonna cry when he leaves the show.

127. Dude, the point of Akito's character that she wasn't strong. If she was a strong character, she wouldn't had let her mother control her like that for years until Tohru came around, and their relationship is one of the most truly fucked up ones in the series (LOL I will sleep with your mother to piss you off). Tohru is a better example of a strong woman/girl in that series.

133. *sigh* Why do people just can't ignore it. Tell your friends that you're not into it. It's okay to have different tastes.

147. D: There's people who hate Kureha? She is one of the best developed female characters in manga I've come across. It took a lot of strength for her to not let what happened to her control her life anymore and she became so much more awesome after that.

161. I realized if he doesn't have his frizzy hair, he was less attractive to me. What?

167. Whoa, she's cute.

170. I don't think it's that they complain they don't, more like they rarely do. Honestly, I'm tired of people bashing Sakura on being useless and weak and completely ignore her development in the second arc.

Not!Secret #2. I lol because it's true, although Austria is even more anal than Tatsumi.

It probably has more to do with the fact that vampires are just more popular than westerns. Westerns bore me to be quite honest.

Yeah, I'm a True Blood fan (but not a fanatic), but I don't find Bill or Eric hot at all. Sam and Jason on the other hand...but, anyway. I watch it b/c it's Alan Ball and vampires and fun.

Well, if you haven't seen Deadwood, I highly recommend you try it out. I don't like Westerns either, but Deadwood is more of a drama that happens to take place in an old West setting.

I like Sam best too. ^^ I don't think it's wrong to enjoy True Blood, I just don't think it's even half as good as Deadwood, and I don't understand the fandom excitement that has sprung up for it.
