137. I know how you feel!

151. ...

...
...
Um... It's okay if you feel that way? Because... Uhh...
maybeidotoo?

164. Looking for Alaska is, like, my all time favorite book. I cry for hours every time I read it.

106

[identity profile] captain-katze.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Me and my little brother used to watch that show every - fucking - time it came on. Even back then I wondered about the "boy and girl" host. I'm sure my brother would find it creepy if he knew I was pairing them up at age 9 or 10, haha.

154

(Anonymous) 2009-01-06 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I probably could tell by your self righteous wankery about houw OMG UR THE BEST FURRY EVER AND THOSE GUYS IN THE FURSUITS ARE CREEPY AND WE'RE NOT ALL LIKE DAT BAWWW

Atleast the guys dressing up as animals and fucking eachother aren't ashamed to admit it.

134. Better be a white Christian, then.

[identity profile] pkbitchgirl.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Is she a racist religious bigot then?

In that case why was she even allowed on the show?

131.

[identity profile] tenshihitomi.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Don't feel bad- I would too. Tool has been one of my favorite bands for years... Ænima changed my life. Also, I'm reminded of the end of the song "Maynard's Dick" when they're all belching. XD

(Anonymous) 2009-01-06 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
165. But Jennifer is an insult to women. That is the point. Her refusal to stand up to a couple of brats resulted in the death of everyone around her. And worse, she spun the entire thing around to make it look like she was the victim.

You can like her or hate her based on that; I mean, I'm not saying she's not an interesting character, and I even like her myself! But saying that she's anything but an "insult to women" (or some other choice phrases I could think of) is faulty logic.

Re: 165

(Anonymous) 2009-01-06 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
But to some extent, she was a victim, and even if you believe that everything that happened is her own fault (instead of, say, the fault of Gregory, the murderer, or Wendy, who manipulated him into it), it's hardly likely that she did it on purpose. I'm pretty sure she couldn't even remember what happened in the first place... Great circumstances to intentionally play the victim, right?

Anyway, I don't care if people like her or hate her, but calling her an insult to women is kind of missing the point, don't you think? Jennifer was a weak person who couldn't stand up for herself, and when she finally did it was too late. That was part of her character development, and you could argue that she has or hasn't changed. But can't she just be a character that needed badly to grow a spine instead of a representative for all of her gender? It's not like people go around saying that James Sunderland is an insult to men. Seriously, nobody in Rule of Rose is meant to be a role model. Everyone had issues, with the possible exception of Brown. Maybe. Flawed characters are more interesting, and if people had to write female characters as a representative of their gender, then we'd get perfect two-dimensional action girls all the time, which often aren't really characters.

At least she tried to fix it, right?

No. Just no.

Eragon is an uninteresting book that balantly steals from other stories. The quality of the writing is mediocre at best.

On the other hand LotR has defined fantasy for our generation.

132, NS!2

[personal profile] cleverthylacine 2009-01-06 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
132. You know, it's okay with me that you find him boring, but don't tell ME why I like him. I don't find him boring. I find him really, really interesting. His family problems, personal conflicts, religious conflicts, canonical kinkiness and family history interest me. I like the way he interacts with the kids on the show and generally tends to defend them. All of this may be boring for you, but it interests me. Sure, I like the way he looks, but the second thing I hear out of every butthurt fan of some other supporting character's mouth, right after "omg people are so ---ist, they don't like my favourite character enough" is "but Cameron/Foreman/whoever they like is HOT!!!" In point of fact there are no un-hot recurring characters on House, so you cannot blame the fact that some of them are more popular than others on their hotness or lack thereof. (OK, I don't think Taub is that hot, but I'm sure somebody out there does. However, Jesse Spencer, Omar Epps, Jennifer Morrison, Olivia Wilde and Kal Penn are all SCORCHINGLY hot, ergo, you cannot say that the fact I like Chase, 13 and Kutner much better than Cameron and Foreman has to do with their hotness or lack thereof. And in fact I like Taub, even though I do not think that he is that hot. Everybody on House is good-looking.)

NS!2: The reason that people judge Ginny for her sexual behaviour is not that she has large numbers of past partners; it's that she dated boys who really liked her while secretly using them all as stepping stones to get to her ultimate goal of being with Harry Potter. That is skeevy and I'm sure she didn't say to them all, "I know you like me, and I like you okay, but really I like Harry more, and I need to pretend that I'm over him so he won't think I'm a freak who's still emotionally stuck at the age of 10." I don't think her behaviour would have been OK if she were a boy. You may not like the word "slut" because it is typically applied to women and not men. And I'd even agree with you about that. But we need a word--not a nice word, because this kind of behaviour isn't nice--for people who engage in dishonest, deceptive, dishonourable sexual behaviour. "Slut" tends to be the default because most people who do this shit are promiscuous, but many of them aren't, and many promiscuous people are honest and pleasant. People who cheat on their significant others, people who sleep with their friends' partners without permission, people who pretend they like you more than they really do in order to get you to take off your pants--there needs to be a word for this. I would like it to be gender-neutral, and not used specifically to shame women. But until we come up with such a word, there are going to be people who use the word "slut" not to shame women as a whole but because they need something to call this kind of crappy behaviour. And many people who use the word this way use it to describe men, too.

And yes, Ginny was just a kid. That makes the wrong things she did understandable and forgivable, assuming she's better behaved as an adult. It doesn't make them not wrong. We all do wrong things starting out in dating, very few people manage to get it right the first time and never hurt anyone or never be dishonest. But it's still wrong, and we don't see enough of her as an adult to have any idea how or if she changed.

I think the word for the person who engages in that kind of behavior is "skeeze," or at least, that's the way we used it back in undergrad. It's kind of a combo of skank and sleeze, and it was applied without respect to gender. I think it works.

101 I agree. It should be translated unless there's absolutely no English equivalent (ie. words like "sempai")

106 Oh my god, someone remembers

113 Bitch are you for real

122 So how do you judge me knowing that you're probably 100% unfamiliar with my favorite series?

139 At least you're honest. It's not like I'm down on people for being into it for the slash, it's when people try to get intellectual and defensive about it that I get annoyed.

143 I judge a series if it has bad art. How is that any different than judging a series for having poor writing or terrible characters? Quit acting like the art isn't a major part of what is a VISUAL medium.

139

(Anonymous) 2009-01-06 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
So basically people who say they aren't in for the slash are denying themselves? Gotcha, so the reason I'm in it for are completely invalidated. Great to know.

I think he's interesting because we don't know much about him and we can speculate. My favorite episode in season 1 was the one where Chase's father comes to PPTH. To me it seems like a lot of people dislike Chase because of the Vogler thing and never changed their mind since then.

Re: 132

(Anonymous) 2009-01-06 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not talking about you, but I've noticed that a lot of people seem to like Chase for the same reason they dislike Foreman: "We don't know much about him, we can speculate." And Foreman: "We don't know anything about him, he's boring." Which.. I don't get.

No offense to this author specifically, but AUs in the Merlin fandom just seem so...ugh. When I see a new one pop up, I always think, 'Why doesn't the author just write original fiction?' They could retain some of the personality traits, even say, 'This character looks like Bradley James and this one looks like Colin Morgan', and for some reason, I think I'd like it better. Merlin and Arthur as modern day frat boys, or whatever, just seems weird and pointless. But I'm pretty sure I'm alone in this, and hey, if everybody else is enjoying them, that's great, I guess. Just thought I'd get that off my chest, lol.

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. There are a number of shows that I have watched and loved and never really got into the fandom. Or if I am in the fandom it is not on LJ.

So yes, I agree with the idea that you can enjoy the canon of a particular show even if the fandom drives you right up a wall.

113. Yes, because everyone knows that grand, all-encompasing plots, the most detailed and beautiful world-building that a fantasy series has ever seen, a vast array of fascinating characters who all grow and evolve as the books continue, and absolute mastery of the English language are nothing compared to OMG PRETTY BOYS IN DRAGONS ^_^ Paolini DID write a bitter story!
