106. Hee! You know, a lifetime ago I used to be friends with the kid who did the voice of the boy in that show. (Can't remember the character's name now but hey ROBIN-BOY where the hell have you been?)

107. Sorry. I'm of that ilk that freaks out over BNFs. (In recovery now, thankyouverymuch.) I can't tell you what others think, but I can tell you that all I ever wanted was for you to be my friend. Unfortunately, a lot of it is a self-esteem problem turned egocentrism on my part - I don't like myself well enough that I think if a BNF likes me, that would be proof of my worth. So that's my pathological fan-jealousy psychological template. Hope it's useful, and I hope most of your fans are mentally more healthy than I am. (But, heh, I'd also really love it if you read what I have written for the fandom, let me know my stuff's good enough to pass muster.)

154. Don't get me wrong, but what's the definition of furry, then? It can't just be "likes animal characters," or every three-year-old would be a furry. Please elucidate? (Or tell me to go to Urban Dictionary and GTFO, but maybe you'd like the opportunity to explain.)

AGREED.

113. I do actually read Eragon, but...GET OUT, it is NOT better than LOTR!

Haha, Richter/Aster is my forever OTP. I love them more than I've ever loved any other pairing. But the key difference between them and Matt and Mello (that I can tell; I haven't read Death Note so I'm not too familiar with it) is that it's CANON that Aster was pretty much the center of Richter's world, so shipping them isn't a stretch at all. (Hell, I'd argue that you could almost consider it canon anyway.)

WHO ARE YOU, OP? I WANT TO FANGIRL WITH YOU.

109 - “insane, creepy, amoral, ludicrous”

I... what... no, really, WHAT THE FUCK? Dickgirls? AMORAL?

113 - *laughs head off* OP, I don’t care about your preferences, you’re free to have them, but calling a series with the sheer logical inconsistency of the Inheritance books better than Tolkien makes you look like a total freaking moron. XD

128 - If this secret is supposed to be synonymous with “I have such a huge girlcrush on this character asgsdfsdg but everybody mistakes it for me wanting to be like her”, ohgod I know the feeling. D:

130 - I HAVE TOO MUCH FREE TIME BUT I’M NOT A BNF. THANKS, OP, NOW I’M DISAPPOINTED WITH MYSELF. :(

137 - It’s decided. My next secret is going to sport the text “I judge you if you call FanFiction.Net ‘The Pit (of Voles)’.” Because you know what? If you look down on beginners and people posessing more enthusiasm than they are graced with talent (which a name like ‘Pit of Voles’ inevitably implies), I LOOK DOWN ON YOU.

*high fives OP*

141 - I HAVE NO DISDAIN FOR YOU, OP. LET US HAVE HARMLESS FUN TOGETHER. :D

162 - Only slightly related? Do I detect a Stardust secret?

153 - I'm a Spirit fan too! Much as I can understand Maka's hatred of Spirit for his behaviour, I'd like them to eventually reconcile somehow. He's a decent bloke who wants to be a good dad.

101. Wait, using proper English is elitist now? Then again, translations of one sentence in two different contexts should be usually different. However, phrases like "itadakimasu" and "tadaima" have English equivalents and should be translated.

But please, don't modify any puns and the like to English approximations, just translate them and explain. I saw
only one translation where puns were transformed into English puns and it worked.

113. Either troll or stupid, I don't care either way.

122. Me too.

113

(Anonymous) 2009-01-06 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Sigh.

I sometimes really think I am the only person that hates LotR. No, I don't think Eragon is better. Not at all. Yes, I realize that LotR influenced all fantasy after it ever, and I kind of hate that fact. I don't care. It bored me to goddamn tears. I thought reading the sections of the Bible that list people's genealogy for pages and pages was more interesting. I thought reading the catalogue of ships in the Iliad was more interesting. Hell, I don't even care that other people like LotR. I just hate being the only person that doesn't like it that isn't a complete drooling-faced moron like 113.

(Sometimes I want my mythology to have something different than pritty pritty elfs and medieval European influences. Would it kill somebody to write, like, fantasy books taking place in a world like, say, Mughal India? Anything else, honestly, I just pulled that name out of my ass. Seriously, anything besides this medieval swords and sorcery generic bullshit.)

Re: 113

(Anonymous) 2009-01-06 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind swords and sorcery, but I'm not a big fan of LotR either. It felt like there really was a good story underneath all of the longwinded worldbuilding descriptions, but I just couldn't build up enough momentum through those parts to actually enjoy the story. Maybe I have no attention span, but I like it better when worldbuilding is worked into the flow of the story a little more.

Still, it feels like to be a decent fantasy fan, you need to like LotR, and dislike certain other books like Eragon. I haven't read Eragon (the rampant hatred for it kind of scared me off) but I've heard people make intelligent cases that it had its redeeming points (such as the dragons in Eragon having more of their own motivations and goals than in some other series where dragons are major characters.)

Yeah, 113 didn't seem to make his or her case very well-- arguing that a large, cohesive, well-respected fandom is "just jealous" of a small fandom of a book regarded as so bad it's horrible... well, not only is it childish, but it just doesn't make any sense. But I have a feeling that even if the secret had been grammatically perfect and mature, it still would have been flamebait. What's so bad about not liking LotR, if you genuinely like it? Or what's so bad about liking Eragon, if you genuinely do?

not!secret 4 ; uh. I don't know what to say. This is just... strange. \:

129 ; ahahaha.

163 ; I have NEVER listened to any of their music. I don't intend to either.

164 ; AHHHH Looking for Alaska, one of my FAVORITE BOOKS. It does suck that there won't be a HUGE fandom, but maybe with the movie that I PRAY will come out, more people will hear of it. I still have to read Wallflower, but my friend has and says it's very good. (:
also LMFAO Colonel/Pudge ahahahdajhgdgfj

Don't read Wallflower. Unless you're 15 or so, at which age you'll probably think it's OMG so deeeeep!! I read it six years too late: maybe that's why I'm on my holy crusade to stop people reading the damn thing.

Are you serious? JRRT developed a full history for his series. He defined the fantasy genre. JRRT put time and effort into it! I couldn't make it past the first page of Eragon because it was so terrible, but I can reread LOTR because it's interesting and continues to be so.

Then again it's like comparing apples and oranges, you just can't do it.

Also, LOTR has been around for seventy years, I bet you no one will remember Eragon in seventy years.

Re: 113

(Anonymous) 2009-01-06 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't stop LotR from being a bore.

Not the OP, and I'm not defending Eragon.

YES, they're quite horrible.

I've long since accepted the fact that apparently, only the shittiest German Bands have a stab at international popularity.

Go listen to some Tocotronic, Tomte, The Notwist or even Peter Licht, that's where the truly excellent German Music is at.

You may all accuse the author of copying stuff, but I think you are all just bitter that he wrote a bitter story than you favorite books.

At the second "bitter" I was going to say, "ha ha, Freudian slip much?"

Instead, I'm going to say: I don't pay attention to the literary judgments of people who can't be bothered to proofread. I'm moderately fond of LotR, which is to say I read and enjoyed them but probably won't read them again for another decade, and I've never read Eragon; but "recommendations" like this are a good reason to stay away.

Elitist!secret is elitest. And judgmental. Cry moar.
