152. I know exactly what you mean. I only ever, anymore, venture into the Fire Emblem fandom, because it's nice, quiet, and feels like home. But there's so many more series I like.

So yeah, when people ask me how I can like something because the following is so crazy, I just kind of give them a "... what?" look. Because, to me, they're not a package deal.

113. The Eragon series has a good enough story, but you just CAN'T compare it to LotR, much less say it's better. Lord of the Rings is a lifetime's worth of work, with a history and languages and...good God, it's just a class all it's own. You can't compare the two. I HEAR YOU. I am sick to death of friends saying "I can't read/watch X series anymore because its fans are such (bleep)". So don't read their forum or whatever anymore, for pete's sake, and quit letting their squabbles get to you! There is NOTHING wrong with being a fan of any piece of story canon just because you happen to like it.

"Itadakimasu" I can see as leaving, because it has no real English cultural equivalent and no matter what way I've seen it translated ("thanks for the food," "let's eat," and others), it just never seems to have the right tone.

I'm only partway through the game now, and I know there are no spoilers, I already know about Aster and what not, and goddamn I ship them so hard, and I was INDIGNANT and the lack of Richter (so far, and in the future apparently) and yeah.

Don't feel bad though, its really not a matt/mello situation as far as I can tell. It would have been nice for Richter to have lolcharacter development :<

101 - Seems to me it would be MORE work to leave it untranslated, then add a translator's note at the top of the translation. Why not (as in your example) put "Just according to plan" and be done with it? Leaving half your shit in Japanese or whatever language just makes it more irritating to read, unless you're explaining a cultural joke or meaning at the top.

129 - I have no idea what's going on there (other than someone bawwwing about stolen fanart), but that person owns.

101. I'm inclined to agree, although depending on what English the translator/editor chooses to use, it can end up sounding out of place and kind of throws me out of the moment. An example off the top of my head - xxxHOLiC and hitsuzen. "There is no coincidence - only hitsuzen," is usually how I see it. If people translate it, I'd be much better with "inevitability" or even "things that are bound to happen" than "fate," which seems too final to really get the nuance of the word, IMO.

161. This secret amuses me because I've been a Perfume fan for a while and only just learned of capsule a couple days ago from a friend. I don't know about anyone else, but personally it hardly ever occurs to me to look for music based on the producer/record label. I generally find music I like based on poking around the genre or by recommendations from people.

107) Yeah, it's cry moar -- but I know exactly what you mean. Not so much now that I've been out of fandom for a few years but for a while there... yeah. Being fangirled feels more awkward and inappropriate than flattering. Like someone mistook you for someone important.

109) Yeah. Same thing happened to me. Used to be i was squicked by lots of stuff. Er... not so much now.

121) Patience. And of course it helps to hang out places where there are single people of your preferred orientation.

122) I'm the opposite. Real life politics matters and effects me, who you ship is no one's business but your own. You may judge me hard, but I think you have serious priority issues.

152) THIS. Seriously. I love dozens of canons, I read books, enjoy movies, love TV shows, and I'll maybe bother to participate in one or two fandoms. Fandom is so not necessary to enjoy canon. Occasionally, canon isn't necessary to enjoy fandom (there are some damn good fics and art out there that stand on their own merits).
