111. I agree, there CAN be and IS a lot of good stuff there. Honestly, the only thing that's preventing me from posting my fanfic up there is sheer laziness.

154. Except that being Sparrow's first mate would've still meant we'd get another strong female in the series, but instead they just seemed to replace her with Elizabeth, instead.

157. I think I started swinging back and forth on my feet with my hands in my pockets because of him, too. Darn you, Lee Pace, and your mesmerizing body language!

178. Same, and same. The only scanlations I read are for DNAngel, and only because I wanted to see how it was being continued and couldn't wait for the US release. I'm still buying the books when they come out here.

Really, sloppy translation or no, at least some of the money still goes back to the original creators of the work, and that's a good thing.
(Also, they were the ones that started the trend of NOT flipping the artwork, so that's where the "authentic" label came from. So technically it's accurate, it's just that they've gone down in quality wildly in recent years.)

also, 113

[identity profile] magicalmophead.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
They've got bagged milk in India, too. XD It weirded me out when I lived there and first saw it. (Of course, in India we also had to boil the milk, then skim off the floating bits of fat. ...Yeah, I found I didn't want to have cereal for breakfast much there. I was/am a spoiled American, I guess.)
ext_81845: penelope, my art/character (contemplation)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
117 Eh, none of those outfits are particularly stunning, they just look like anything you could buy at the mall.

124 I don't think he aged well at all

125 Well, it's not the same thing, but I like a song a lot more if the lyrics are relevant to the plot of my story and/or one of my characters.

140 Never stop being a dumbass with a shallow, passing interest in history!

147 The weird thing is that nobody seems to have a problem with people paying money for commissioned fanart at conventions.

155 LOL LOOK AT ME I'M TRYING TO GET ATTENTION AND I THINK SHIT LIKE THIS IS FUNNY BECAUSE I HAVE AN INCREDIBLY HORRIBLE SENSE OF HUMOR

163 God, that movie is so disturbing. I can't believe it's actually aimed at children. Putting all the obvious scenes aside (the parts shop, Toaster's dream sequence with the scary clown) the entire movie touches on the fear of abandonment, which is very strong in a lot of children.

178 I hate them too. And their books often have a lot of printing errors.

All Things Doctor Who

[identity profile] andy-longwood.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, as far as I'm concerned, this Matt Smith is as col as the next guy and I wish him all the best in the world.

But I would totally prefer the next Doctor to be old and not even prettier than the last one. Or black. Or nonhuman. Or a girl. Or -

Re: All Things Doctor Who

[identity profile] girl-curve.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the Doctor IS nonhuman. Unless you're talking about casting a nonhuman actor, which I think is a little outside the realms of possibility at this point. (I'm imagining Pedro the Drug Dog in the Tardis.)

I agree with you on the other points.

I would die if KT stopped writing Bleach, though. :/

118. I wouldn't say I'm more interested in the campanion, but I am pretty damn interested.

I'm still hoping Donna comes back. =(

137. I'm trying so hard to get a ship for this show. I just can't think of any that I really like. (Well, there is Daniel/Betty, but I don't ship it that hard.)

143. At least you didn't just stand there hyperventilating, like I know I would have done. xD

[identity profile] fruitsgrow.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Because Thirteen was actually becoming a layered character before? Yeah, right. Pretty much everything they do with her makes her worse and worse; they don't know how to handle anything properly with her. If you think Foreman is the worst thing to happen to her character, you haven't been paying attention.

And I'm happy to be stupid and a moron if it means I get pretty people having sex. But hey, I think you're stupid and a moron, too.

117 - I think he's good at both. Though the manga could use more Nemu. :3

147 - I disagree. Creating fanart takes quite a bit of work most of the time--is it really asking so much to be asked for permission/given credit when it's taken for icons? And asking for a donation is not some kind of heinous crime, if their work is being hosted on their own site--I don't believe those are free to maintain, so a few donations from appreciative people here and there help keep their work up on their website for everyone to see, critique and enjoy.

Honestly, when you walk through Chinatown and see someone's NaruHina fanart blown up into a wallscroll with their watermark still on it for about 15-20 dollars, and you know the artist isn't getting paid shit for it because it was STOLEN--yeah, I'm gonna sympathize with the artists.

165 - I like all of them, but I do want Nill to have a happy ending more than anyone. Haine comes next. Double points if their happy ending is together. XD

147

[identity profile] hooves.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I totally agree. I'm not much of an artist, but I would be upset if I saw something I worked hard to create being used without credit by someone else. It's not hard to tag icons with "Made by so-and-so" or even "Art from DeviantART" or something.

I would be just as upset if I saw any of my writing being published by someone else. =]

108.) That looks interesting. =O

111.) Amen. But you know, there are good 'fics on FF.net. You just have to find the right fandom and the right authors. I have mixed feelings about your post, though. A part of me says, you know, wow! And the other part of me says, wow, what a self-centered person. =( You're probably a perfectly nice person, but please don't think that your 'fics are good and everyone else's suck. I've been posting to FFN since 2002, and sure, my old 'fics suck. But everyone starts somewhere. My 'fics aren't the greatest, but I know they don't "suck". So who's to say that just because you post your 'fic, people will realize there can be good 'fics on FF.net? I don't know, it sounds terribly egotistical to me. I don't post on FFN so that there will be "good" or "bad" 'fics on there. I post there because I like the system and the way stories are archived. It's easy to find my way around and for other people to find my work. I don't post my 'fics in my journal. Just on FFN. So if you're planning to post to FFN, please do it because of more reasons than trying to prove you're better than everyone else in your fandom. It's kind of rude and it makes you look like a bad person, even if you're not.

119.) I wish I knew you. I'm the same exact way, and I recently went out and bought Anne on DVD. I've had the VHS tapes so long, you see. I thought it was high time to have it on DVD! Their love is absolutely amazing, and the story never gets old for me. I love both Anne and Gilbert. I would love to find a Gilbert in the real world. =]

122.) I love Drew Barrymore because of that movie. Ever After is amazing, and she was more beautiful in that movie than she is now. I loved her just as she was, then. Not only is she an amazing actress, but IMHO, beautiful inside and out.

156.) I've never lied about my age, but I'll admit that I sometimes struggle with listening to people that are much younger than me. I can't help it. I work with people so much older than me that I feel like I'm in my mid to late 30s, and it makes it hard for me to talk to people younger than I am. But even though I've mostly gotten over that, I still struggle with relating to them. That makes it hard.

163.) The Brave Little Toaster made me cry. If I watched it now? I'd probably still cry. I feel bad for throwing out appliances, and it reminds me of the Ikea lamp commercial.

176.) Honey, do yourself a favor. Don't rush headlong into a fandom when you know you end up getting bored so easily in the hopes that that dive will...I don't know, make you popular? It's not a good idea. It's not the lack of "Oh my God! Keep going, I can't wait for an update!" comments that makes you lose steam. Stop fooling yourself. If you want to write a series, the best thing you can do is go around, read 'fics by other people, REVIEW THEM (NOTE THE CAPS LOCKED LETTERS THERE PLEASE), and while doing so, plan a series. In fact, start with a one-shot or two, and then determine if you're still into the fandom enough to write a longer story. And plan ahead. And review other people's works. You know, I'm not saying they or you or anyone deserves reviews, but that is always the best way to hope for some in return. How could you expect other people to care about your work if you don't care about theirs?

Last but not least... It's fandom. While most of us would love to be renowned fans/writers/etc, it won't happen for everyone. Even people who dedicate years to one fandom sometimes end up forgotten about.

And yes, it hurts that people don't seem to care. But jumping headlong into a fandom by writing a series isn't the best way to go about it. Get known in the fandom by reading other people's work, commenting on their art, et cetera, and then when you begin your story, you'll have people who are actually interested in seeing what you can do.

I've been in fandoms for long periods of time, and I am ALWAYS skeptical of a new writer. I know it's bad of me, but I'm always afraid to see what kind of horrible mistake this new writer might make with my favorite characters.

(None of this was meant to offend anyone...)

[identity profile] magicalmophead.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kinda like you--I generally avoid R-rated movies (I think the only other two I've seen all the way through was Fight Club--which was for a class--and Paprika), so Slumdog Millionaire was the first R-rated film I saw in a theater. After seeing that I'm thinking the rating is "more like guidelines than actual rules" (thank you, Barbosa) because...I don't see how that movie deserved an R-rating. I've seen far more violent and intense PG-13 rated films. I think I'm going to start just looking into the content descriptions on Netflix or wherever (which is what I did for Slumdog) than just judging it on the actual rating alone.

147. I'm beginning to think that there's a huge misunderstanding.
Are you pissed about the fact that the artists want to be credited, or is it the manner in which they ask (or rather whine)?
It's probably the attitudes of a few fanartists that trigger all these arguments and the defenders take it as general disrespect...In that case, I wouldn't credit a self-entitled bitch either. (Though I'm not using anyone else's fanart anyways, there's just too much drama to deal with. Holy fuck.)

165. Agreed. Even though I love Badou, Nil is the one I'm really feeling sorry for. I don't know what it is, but Naoto and Haine seem too cold...sure, it's part of their characters, but also part of the reason I never got attached to them :/

105. XD You're pretty awsome, OP, and this secret makes me grin. There's just something nice about knowing that a fandom, any fandom, helped somebody get over a bias. ^_^

111. I really love FF.Net. If it wasn't for that site, I never would have gotten into fandom, and I wouldn't have had an outlet to practice my writing. A couple of years of writing regularly and getting feedback has improved my style like nobody's business. (Disgruntled poster has been posting good!fic on FF.Net for years, thank you very much...)

113. Ah, then you better starting hating America, too, because we give out bagged milk with our public school lunches...

123. OP has a very good point.

166. XDD That's a cool pairing!

171. That's *exactly* what I thought. I know that's why I joined. ^_^
