152 - Ha! Me, too. A little. Awww, I miss Ted =(

184 - I like this secret. It's gonna be a whole new SHOW with a new Doctor, a new companion and even a new freaking showrunner. So really, we should all just wait and see. (I'm totally optimistic, btw^^)

Re: 127.

[identity profile] laura-sk.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
YAY! I was starting to feel so alone in my love for them. I really don't get why Frank Herbert decided to make Chani Paul's one and only, when she had absolutely nothing special, or interesting. At best she was very domestic. And their love story felt so flat and predictable. Irulan on the other hand is such a layered, graceful, unique character that's been wasted. Shame.

135 - obscure secret is obscure. That movie freaked me out, totally weird and awesome.
162 - calm and peaceful but ADDICTIVE. Seriously it's like crack.

163 - That movie made me irrationally anxious about throwing electronics away. Also, if they have any human personality (like my c.d player saying "hello" when it turns on) makes my heart break.

147. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! I thought I was the only one who felt this way. Because seriously? I never understood the beef of people getting pissed off from their fanart being used for icons. It's a compliment, r-tards! It means your art is that good, people will use it as an icon. ;^;

110. Don't worry about it too much. It's annoying when people jump to conclusions like that, but if they judge you just because the dislike people who happen to like the same character as you, they probably weren't worth your time anyway.

117. In my dreams, he collaborates with a good writer on a series that requires frequent drastic costume changes. *_* Ahhh...

125. A big factor in whether I'll like a song or not is how much it inspires me creatively. Which is kind of similar, I think?

145. I have such conflicting feelings about this movie (which I haven't seen). On one hand, I love WWII movies. On the other, TOM FUCKING CRUISE. ;____; And I keep hearing it's good... I've more or less settled on renting it when it comes out.

147. I think it's rather silly when people get angry about others using their fanart for graphics (if you don't want people using it, don't put it on the internet... and the characters aren't even yours), but I think you need to chill. Unless they say things like "I won't draw anymore until I recieve x amount of donations." asking for donations or having a Paypal button doesn't make them some kind of horrible person. If all of their art is free to people who don't donate, then they aren't actually selling anything.

178. Yeah, their translations are kind of all over the place. Sometimes they're good, sometimes they're pretty awful. But, why would you want them to redraw the sound effects? Viz is the only publisher that does that, to my knowledge. They usually end up obscuring more of the art than if they'd left the old ones in.

182. This is why I mostly stay out of fandom, but it doesn't help very much.

template: This is excellent. I hate those secrets more than I ship it/I'd hit it secrets combined.

[personal profile] azurite 2009-01-13 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm torn with the sound effects. You're right in that it's part of the art, and that changing it can often obscure MORE of the original art... but the original author intended it the same way stylized BAM! and POW! and WHOOSH! appear in American comics. It's a pain to always have to flip to the back of the book to read the glossary of sfx terms. Some scanlators I know will have a small "SFX: BOOM BOOM" next to the original, and that's okay, I think, if it's not obscuring any of the original art... personally, I can read the kana used for most SFX, so I don't mind if they're not romanized, but to not translate them ON the page? It's kind of a pain. And in many manga, the SFX are crucial to understanding someone's reaction or where someone is.

113: This has to be one of the dumbest secrets I've seen. Just because of bagged milk? Please. There's other countries who have bagged milk too, do you not like them either?

[identity profile] delfeus.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
166. Aww! I'd probably do the same. Was the book good?

178. I hate it when the original sound effects get removed. I like reading them in the original language. The other stuff is true, but it's not just them, either. Plus I don't think that they Americanize things as much as Viz, although I might be mistaken. Me not being American, I really hate it when translators do that.

the book's good, it's just sort of depressing as far as children's books go.

111) Of course ff.net has good fic! You just have to look and follow the recs and favs.

156) I'm older than almost everyone in fandom. But I think that fans in their teens and twenties have a lot to offer fandom, and I enjoy their company a great deal. I just ask that those under 18 either respect my wishes and stay away from the porn (I write other things as well!), or at least have the good grace not to point it out to me when they do.

168) Ogiue is really the stand in for all yaoi fanficcers. It's hard not to empathize with her.

170) There's CJ Cherryh fanfic out there? Really

181) It's a rant community. What did you expect?

159: Anime drawn men are hawter then IRL gay men? :D Most real gay porn I find the men are either ugly or they're all skin heads (not in THAT way, mind you) so maybe you just want to see something prettier? XD

162: Cute animal lives are cute -,- until you read THIS: http://lparchive.org/LetsPlay/Animal%20Crossing/Update%201/index.html

I was linked here because of the troll secret, made the mistake of reading through some of the related comments, and now I really, really, really don't ever want to even consider touching Hetalia with a ten-foot pole. I didn't have that much interest in it to begin with, but come on fandom it's like you're not leaving a rock unturned (to splooge under).

Hetalia.) FYI, I'm not a hater or anything-- I haven't read it. But wow, just in the past month, all of a sudden, there seems to be a huge explosion of these secrets. Did every one just get into it at once?

113.) I'm also from the west coast and haven't heard of bagged milk. I feel so out of the loop, but! I like the idea of bagged milk! Certainly beats the every day mundane jugs or cartons. (and.. as noted by many, very stupid reason to dislike Canada or any country/person for that matter. People in FS are so petty.)

117.) From what I've seen, his designs are really nice and secret rings true. I'd wear a lot of his designs.

119.) AoGG secret!

122.) I loved Drew in this movie -- I found her entirely cute after seeing it. It was my first movie of her's.

162.) Living life surrounded by cute animals every day and having nothing to worry about but it's little town dramas.. what could be more pleasant? The animals are really adorable.

Re: Hetalia

[identity profile] qichi.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's about right, really. I mean, look at 171. Back in like June, the fandom was still fairly small with not too much going for it other than some boards on /cm/.. then more and more people kept coming. A few big-name artists joining the fandom brought all their fans over, the anime announcement dragged a bunch more in, it's.. gone from fairly normal-size fandom to ~OMG LIKE COOLEST NEW THING~ pretty quickly.

110

[identity profile] feenietime.livejournal.com 2009-01-13 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
What is this prettiness so many speak of? He's attractive, sure (strong jaw, broad shoulders, mysterious air), but pretty? Max Galactica is pretty. Klavier tiptoes on the border of pretty. But Edgeworth? I just don't see it.

That said, echoing what others have already stated: he has way more going on than his looks. I highly doubt anyone's going to think you like him for that reason.
azurite: (sailormoon - manga venus fade)

[personal profile] azurite 2009-01-13 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
111 - Alas, you can't be the judge of whether or not your own fic is bad. If people could do that of their own fics, we'd have even MORE tripe on the Internet, and more self-absorbed, pretentious tweenies with no way to shoot them down when someone points out their ellipsis abuse or missing commas. That said, I dislike FFnet's system of support and how they have gone willy-nilly deleting reported fics without checking into them. However, I do like their upload system, the C2s and forums, their new beta system, and the fact that they are the BIGGEST DAMN ARCHIVE ON THE 'NET. So I still post my stuff there, and I still get more reviews there than I do at any other archive (and I do post at lots). So I'm not running away. I'm with you. I do think gems can be found on FFnet, but someone usually has to point you to them. The likelihood of you just FINDING one while searching for your usual/favorite genres or fandoms or whatnot... slim to nil.

113 - I went to high school in the U.S. and our school lunch milk was always bagged. I HATED IT. You had to be some sort of expert with the pointy straw and stabbing it in exactly the right spot to avoid getting splorshed in the eye with a jet of icy milk. And I do mean ICY, because they'd keep these bags in the freezer, so sometimes you'd get milk with ice particles in it. Not fun. That's why I had soda almost every day. This was before the ban on sodas in schools, and of course, my teeth paid the price. Stupid bagged milk. Whatever happened to those cute stubby cartons? And why must they be environmentally unsound? Why not make little plastic bottles, like the gallon-sized ones, but smaller? ;_; GOT MILK!?

116 - HOMG THIS! I thought there was something "wrong" with me because I seemed to be an oddball in the freakin' fandom for liking Miaka! Everyone was all like "Ooh, poor Yui," but I saw Yui as someone who was gullible/easily manipulated, untrusting, sadistic, and cruel! Of course, both she AND Miaka changed, and that's what makes me respect them as characters, but people who just... typecast them (esp. Miaka) as whiny or food-crazy... there's more to her than that! She grows and changes, but you have to give her a chance and WATCH/READ!

126 - Wow Xena secrets are makin' a comeback! Or a come-on! Or something, but yay with Xena secrets!

142 - So you're willingly proving one of Freud's theories because... why? Seriously, why not just NOT say anything about some of your new fandoms for a while. See if anyone else brings it up first. Just enjoy it quietly, as a lurker, and then if something related comes up in fandom, drop a tiny hint. You don't have to SQUEE or anything. And seriously, if your friends DO mock what you enjoy, they're NOT friends.

145 - I couldn't see it because, even though the subject matter interests me, why don't they bother having a German accent, at least? I get that, in fanfiction, you're writing in a language particular to your audience; same with 'fic. But in prose, reading "dialectized" words is more difficult than hearing it. Why does it seem like actors (or perhaps screenwriters/directors/Hollywood in general?) is getting lazy whenever it comes to the little details that make a different setting so much more rich and vivid? I could never take Cruise as a Nazi seriously because he just looked and sounded like an American in a Nazi costume. If he'd had even the TINIEST accent in the movie...! *sigh*

147 - Um, having a Paypal account and accepting donations are NOT the same as making a profit. If someone does fanart and makes a print of it and SELLS it, yeah, I don't agree with that. It baffles me whenever I see Artist's Galleries at cons that allow that very thing. But if a talented artist garners a wide following, it may drive up site bandwith costs, or posting more art might require an upgraded account on some site (say, DeviantART). Those donations can help pay for it, and it's not like the people are "paying" and getting something in return (like a print or whatnot). The people probably aren't making a "profit" at all, because profit is what you get IN ADDITION to the cost of time and supplies needed to produce something or run a site. I doubt the donations any artist gets (even popular ones) is enough to truly "make a profit" off someone else's work.
azurite: (sailormoon - lethe & mnemosyne)

[personal profile] azurite 2009-01-13 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
175 - Yay for variety in the Hetalia images used! I especially like this one because it looks "fun." All the others, some country or another always looks grumpy and/or sad (which is not BAD, but it gets tiring).

178 - OH, WORD ON A STICK WITH AWESOMESAUCE ON TOP! I also dislike their so-called original manga program. It seems awfully cruel to creators, even though as audience members, we have gotten some cool (and beautiful) stories/titles out of it. But Tokyopop started out bad (I'm remembering my right-size, wrong everything-else Sailor Moon manga) and hasn't gotten much better. I like Viz a lot more, but even they make a ton of mistakes, don't interact with their customers/audience/fanbase like a publisher ought to, and TBH, used to be a lot better even when they were flipping manga and putting them in the wrong order with weird covers. At least the QUALITY was decent back then! The best company right now for manga, I'm discovering? DEL RAY. (It probably has a lot to do with the fact that they're Kodansha's subsidiary in the States now, which I hope means that titles that Tokyopop formerly tried to translate will get a second shot. Sailor Moon and Sailor V, PLEEEEEEASE!?)

180 - Somewhat OT, but last year when Borders had that stuffed polar bear for Christmas? I got one with a big purchase, and I named him Iorek Tomorrow, the Marshmallow Bear. ;) I wish I could sew, 'cause I'd make him shiny fabric armor.
