I feel sometimes Indie devs think they have to have a reason to make a game, so they're all "let's make it a metaphor" so they can justify what they're doing. And the players are all "that's nice bro, just make a good fun game!"

or maybe that's me being stuck in the J.A.D.E acronym all the time. (Justify, argue, defend, explain.) I know I don't have to defend what I do, just sometimes, I get stuck there.

Huh. That does seem kinda...unfun.

[personal profile] hey_hey_hey 2021-07-03 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
And more importantly those games are just plain boring.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-03 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I've reached a point in indie games where I get exasperated depending on how they deliver a message. A lot of them are sincere and genuine, but some just feel like...well, Very Indie. I don't know how to explain it, just that seeing characters deliver a Deep, Philosophical and/or Meaningful Lesson has as much a chance of being too quirky and niche that it fails to be charming. I guess that's the best way to describe how I feel?

(Anonymous) 2021-07-04 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, because this isn't a thing with EVERY type of video game at all.

Known Indie Game Series Silent Hill, for example, totes isn't about mental illness and trauma.

Yeaaaaaaaaaah. There's definitely a place for it and an audience who will enjoy that sort of thing (also in games and shows too) but I don't want to deal with RL issues in my escapism.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-04 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
For what it's worth, I've always believed that some of the best escapism gives you a glimpse of what you're escaping from.

(Cozy Werewolf Anon)

As a fellow Christian, I have to agree. I, in general, stopped reading Christian Lit around 9th grade or even before b/c the preachy, black and white, absolutism on everything, verses of context, level of writing didn't engage me anymore. And I hate how there are "Christian authors" out there who will "change their name" and try to paint their hate in a "secular" way to "expand their audience" (and still use a Christian publisher so it's all pointless.) It's gross. And Jesus is frowning at you. He's disappointed!

There's a reason Lawhead left Tyndale and went to Tor as a publisher.

As an author even with Christian ideas (Sort of) in my books and some Bible quoting the once, I've never bothered to query a Christian publisher b/c their guidelines for how the books HAVE to be written are so strict and so ridiculous to the degree they don't want their audiences to have to think for themselves, I'd never be "Christian" enough for them. And honestly, it's a good thing. B/C Nuance is a good thing.

I'm doing a video on this at some point where I can go into more detail. I have so many scripts right now for videos, I have no idea when it will go up. The culture is just soo... sanctimonious. It's hard to condense into a comment.

Also, Christian bookstores are SURREAL experiences.

I totally get this. It cheapens the message of the gospel to have it associated with so much 'pop culture' junk. I wish more people would stop trying to be popular and start trying to be a good example.

....yeah, also grew up "conservative" Christian (now "radical leftist antifa Jesus-was-a-liberal" Christian) and was subjected to a lot of that kind of thing. Though I seem to recall that when I saw the first Left Behind movie as a teenager in like 1992 I thought it was kind of neat - Christian horror movie, and it was actually kind of terrifying at points! The sequels were absolute trash though, they should have just left well enough alone.

It's also really weird how different denominations/traditions look at this stuff. Because yes, there are lots of kids I grew up with whose parents only let them read Christian novels, watch Christian movies, listen to Christian music. But then there was this one family I knew who ... they tried to explain to me, I think it was something like "taking something worldly and secular and trying to pretend that it can be Christian is sacrilege"? So they were not allowed to listen to Christian rock because rock music is inherently not Christian and all "Christian" rock music was therefore a trick of the devil or something... so well, we listened to Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd and Metallica. Okay. XD

There were a couple Christian artists who I absolutely adored though, at least at the time. My brother who is now an atheist quoted Audio Adrenaline lyrics at me the other day out of the blue and I cracked the heck up - we saw them live a few times and they put on an incredible show. And I wonder if it's "sacrilege" to think that the guy from Starflyer 59 has the sexiest voice ever... But overall, yeah, not every song has to be specifically and blatantly about God. If you believe God made the world, maybe focus on some of the many awesome or confusing things in the world that people other than JUST people who already share your faith can relate to, and not just literally preach to the choir? *shrug*

100% agreed. Also, not just the movie, but those books are terrible as well, so it isn't surprising that the adaption was awful.

ex-christian and former CCM DJ checking in to say YES THIS.

My day was the heyday of Charlie Peacock's Art House movement, Rich Mullins, Gene Eugene, Steve Taylor's best satire. They were the musicians who said it was ok to make art for art's sake, and they each in their own ways espoused quality in their work. For them it was ok to write songs about sex, to talk about grief and doubt, to write songs about the mistakes they've made, and to hold others to their standards. But of course, the only thing that lasted was the lowest-level schlock that panders. Bland pap that gives lip service to literally any basic tenet but is basically just preaching to the choir, and the choir eats it up with a spoon.

It's been 30 years for me and nothing has improved. Except me, deconverting was the best thing I could have done. But I still have fond memories of the music.

What kind of fanfiction do you read?

What are your favorite tropes? Ship dynamics? Genres? Have you ever just read anything out of curiosity/boredom or because there's a small amount of fanworks in your fandom?
