102. In the comic, I found him insanely insidious. In the movie, I found him a slimy narcissist.

107. It doesn't make you a bad fan at all! It makes Jackie Earle Haley a FUCKING AWESOME ACTOR.

147. Charles Chaplin? o.O

[identity profile] jesscheaux.livejournal.com 2009-03-16 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
101. ME TOO!

102. Must be because his actor is so pretty XD I know I was a little pissed at him when I read the novel but when I was watching the movie I kept thinking MY GOD THAT MAN IS PRETTY! I also think he's like super gay in the movie XD

113. Well, it's YOUR FIC. It's not like you have to keep writing Zutara because you're getting paid or anything. If you want Zutoph, then change it! If you want to keep with the same fic you'll have to ease into it but it can be done! Or, maybe you could just start writing a new fic that's Zutoph!

119. AWWW THAT KITTY LOOKS JUST LIKE MY CAT THINES :D

Too Big 1: GET HELP! That's the beauty of writing fiction, you don't actually have to go through those things to write about them, like people who write about war or historical fiction. It's awful something like this happened to you, please get help :(

actors, characters, those people are among some of the awesomest there are.

161) I love Olive and Nolive is cute...but I feel that if it actually happens it will go against the whole series =/.

121 - This secret intrigues me, it looks very interesting. What fandom is it for?

124 - ...I would read that.

147 - I agree so, so much. Charlie Chaplin FTW...And I'm basically in the same situation as you. I'd love for an older, talented man to take notice of me like he did with several younger actresses. Also, I'm reading the biography of his third wife, Oona O'Neill...And the fact that even though there were three decades separating them in age they still managed to have a long and happy marriage with eight children just makes me so happy. I want something like that someday.

150 - Also, this movie intruiges me. What is it?

So many Ozymandias secrets FTW. Favourite character in the comic, and favourite character in the movie. Booyeah. <3

You should see her one for Cassandra Clare's latest, City of Glass.

"Dear Edward and Jacob, I adore you both, but I'm spending the weekend with Jace. Sorry! Love, Stephenie."

Yeah... I don't even like CC or Mortal Instruments and I winced.

What about when she "reviewed" Wicked Lovely? She said those books were only popular because of their covers.

It's... nice and ironic because that's the only good thing about HER novels. =P

I... sort of agree. Race and racism and how it affects fandom IS a really really important thing to talk about, and it's something we should be talking about. But apart from the people who already are anti-racist and passionate about the issue and want to have this discussion, people don't really find talking about race/racism to be very enjoyable. It's scary for everyone involved, no matter what race they are, and it's emotionally taxing to have to deal with it instead of ignoring it. Discussions about race take mostly everyone outside of their comfort zone.

Does that mean we should just ignore it? Of course not! But because race comes up so much in meta/fandom discussions, the average person can get quite overwhelmed. People who are overwhelmed can get overly defensive about it ("who, me? I'm not privileged, this whole discussion is stupid and full of reverse racism!!!") or just ignore the topic altogether ("this is lame, write more porn.")

Because of that, I think it might be helpful not to have this discussion so much on communities that aren't devoted to the discussion in general. Once in a while, meta or discussion about racism will make you think. Maybe it'll make you want to go to space online or offline that's completely about the racism discussion. But right now we're just overwhelmed with the amount of racism discussion, and there's too much going on for us to really absorb as much as we probably should. It's "oh, this again?" instead of "hey, you've got a point." We should still talk about it, of course, but people will listen better if it's in smaller doses.

OP, I'm going to take a wild guess and assume you're white, because I can't imagine a POC posting this... One of the reasons that Racefail09 is still dragging on is because of people like you who said, "this makes me uncomfortable, so you should all stop talking about it."

Look, I know we were brought up to avoid ever discussing race, and that we were taught that acknowledging race is rude (with the unspoken implication that white people do not have a race and being nonwhite is some defect that people just can't help, it's not their fault they were born that way). And I know that when people do talk about it we have this squirmy feeling in our stomachs as we remember all the unintentionally racist things we've said or done in our lives.

BUT. This uncomfortableness is important. It is your conscience reminding you that yes, racism is an important thing, it is still around and it is not just confined to personal insults or acts. Just because you yourself don't intentionally do racist things doesn't mean that the problem doesn't exist, and when you dismiss a discussion of race the way you just did, you are saying, "You people are making me question my worldview, so I'm just going to announce that you don't matter."

This is wrong, wrong, WRONG, so wrong it's not even funny. Normally I would agree with you about internet wankfests-- I love them because it gives me something to point and laugh at. But this one isn't about shipping wars, it's about a Real Life Issue that affects fandom in every aspect. And if you go through [livejournal.com profile] rydra_wong's comprehensive list of links, you will get a bunch of better explanations than I can give you right now-- though if you only read one thing, read this (http://mmcisaac.faculty.asu.edu/emc598ge/Unpacking.html).

My point is, who are you to tell people to STFU about something like this? We-- fans of color + white fans like me-- are never going to shut up until other people stop plugging their ears and singing, "La-la-la, can't hear you!"

Re: 129

[identity profile] jaquenerd.livejournal.com 2009-03-16 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
...I should have just come here first. XD

But yes, I agree I agree I agree. Especially with the second paragraph.

All the people going "HOW DARE YOU SPEAK OUT AGAINST SOCIAL INJUSTICE!!!11" just make it obvious to me how comfortable they are with said social injustice. Hopefully, the less defensive ones will read people's comments again and think about what is being said.

True. When it comes to Antony, Cicero can't keep his hands to himself.

FUCK YEAH WATCHMEN

101. I did too. D: Especially at Dollar Bill. What a stupid, horrible way to go, poor guy.

102 & 116. FFFFFFFFF YEAH WELL I'M WORSE I DIDN'T LIKE HIM SO MUCH IN THE COMICS BUT I LOVE HIM IN THE MOVIE... and I think the reason is that I just found his movie-self to be far more of a sympathetic character. In the movie he was a lot more... smug, I guess? And movie!Adrian seemed slightly more guilty about what he'd done (letting Daniel beat the crap out of him rather than going off to 'meditate.') Idk, maybe I'm not making any sense. (I swear it has nothing to do with the fact that Matthew Goode is gorgeous.)
Also, I love the giant fucking purple triangle that is Veidt International's headquarters. Just thought I'd throw that out there. (BOYS FOLDER)
Also also, /y/ made me ship Comedian/Ozymandias. WHYYYYY
shutting up now

107. I think it must have been the almost-whimper he did... and the chin quiver... and the little wince... that sent everybody into ";___________; whyyyyy" mode. Just a guess. /cries.

Watchmen secrets: Bring them on. Better this than that Hetalia or Twilight shit. (But, less Ozymandias; more everybody else.]

1 - The first time I saw that [clip; haven't seen the movie yet], I cried.

109 - The mysterious Stig. Could be fun. :D

142 - I <3 Peter Davison. In any role.

147 - Wow, a Charlie Chaplin secret. Cool beans. I think... I think I wouldn't have said no to that myself. :X
