117. This again? Some straight women prefer m/m (and het) for the same reason some straight men love lesbian scenes in pornos but would never watch gay porn. On the other hand, I'm bi and have been with and faithful to my partner for 15 years. I read w a y more m/m than f/f because my partner fulfills all my f/f needs (w/out getting tmi on you). Go figure. People: We come in infinite varieties and no two have the same taste.

126. LOL! You made my night! Definitely a plausible theory. ::g::

I'm the exact opposite - I tend only to like stereotypical "guy" games and the trouble with those is that there's no fandom.

...And it is tempting to pretend to like KH or FF or some other bloody thing just so I can talk to people on the internet about it beyond the scope of LOOKIT MAH GUN, OH NOES BECKETT DONE GOT RAEPED.

Luckily, there's the megaten games >_>

You want to know how to stop this kind of "takeover?" Do NOT kowtow to anything your fannish newbies say, no matter what it is. "Kowtow" doesn't mean "agree" - which, of course, happens a lot in fandom and makes friendships possible (as well as some civil disagreement). Earned agreement is good. I'm talking about humbling anything you say before their interpretation, like they're the Enlightened faction and deserve to be in charge. They can bring up NOTHING that fandom oldies haven't already discussed to death, with respect to meta subjects, LOL.

I've been a Trek fan for almost 20 years. I don't want to see it warped and ripped up, either. New ideas are a great thing, but total disregard for the "oldies" in a fandom makes me want to slap a bitch.

(Yeah, I know what it's like to watch new fans swarm across a fandom already largely peaceful and comfortable, and hack and cut at it and divide, divide, divide, until it damn near breaks. And no, this new crop of fans will NOT be just like when the Next Gen "trekkers" got into Trek back in 1987. The Internet has changed manners, discussion methods, and the type of people attracted to "geek" fandoms.)

I can't wait for all of the brand spanking new TOS fanbrats. Sarcasm goes here.

Look I know our fandom is sort of the ur-example of the Mary Sue but I am not interested in the explosion of shitfic that is going to come of all this...

151. That is exactly my fear. As much as I like some of the cast, I don't want some flashy new show.

133. WTF, the girl in the middle looks like a FAKE person.

135. Yeah, not going to lie. That song is incredibly sexy >:D

145. LOL, secret because your friends would be right.

150. Wow! Your mom instilled the wrath of possible weeaboo-ness in you? That's... disconcerting.

152. :D :D I say "____ ( ) is _____" in my head all the time...

153. That is certainly a gorgeous picture!

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2009-04-01 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
117. Some people don't ship f/f pairings because they don't find it hot. Seriously, how is this so hard to understand that people make secrets about it over. and over. and OVER?

And yeah, yeah, but that's so shallow, blah blah. Fandom is a fun hobby for fuck's sake. If people are just there for the hot porn and don't give a damn for the deep character analysis, I happen to think that's just fine.

Now, personally I will read some femslash if a friend strongly recs it, or something about the summary intrigues me...but since I don't tend to go looking through more general fic comms or archives, that doesn't happen very often. I'm open to it in my fandoms from the perspective of, "reading good, interesting fics." But I don't usually find it hot, and I don't seek it out.

I generally relate best to the male characters in my fandoms. FANfiction is about other people's established characters - if I don't care about the characters that much in the first place, I sure don't want to read lots of fic about them.

The best fiction I've read about lesbian couples - stuff I actually really liked and could sometimes even find hot - has ALL been original fiction. That might be a matter of the difference between the way women can be written about in books, and the way they can be portrayed on television. I don't know.

But really, most femslash bores me.

151. This secret is so obnoxious.

You know a lot of people have gotten into Classic Who through the new series, right? Yeah, David Tennant is pretty; but I don't have a single friend in Who fandom who doesn't find much more to it than that.

If Trek fandom is ruined (hah, yeah right), the consolation will be that it pisses off people who say things like, "We're geeks, we don't need the pretty."

Sorry, forgot that being geeky means living in a bubble of sex-repellent. Won't do THAT again.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2009-04-01 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
but I don't have a single friend in Who fandom who doesn't find much more to it than that

Maybe your friends have enough sense when getting into a new fandom, to be civil with the existing fans and look around a while before running off at the mouth about what's wrong with the old shows and how the new ones are OMG SO MUCH BETTER THAN WHAT YOU OLD 'TARDS THOUGHT?

(Sorry, I can see the reason for the OP's worry. I have both "old skool" and "new skool" fans on my f-list for more than one rehashed series/movie. I too have been the new kid in a very old fandom before, and while some of the "oldies" are old farts who won't listen to reason by anyone who hasn't watched for 30 years, most like new ideas but simply don't want their squee harshed; they really don't seem to hate the "newbies" so much as the attitude a small but loud percentage of them bring along. If that makes sense.)

117: What? In my experience, most slashers do enjoy femslash as well. I've never heard of any actively avoiding it (until this secret).

124: We can't always expect to be understood. Join if you want to; the reactions of your friendslist will tell you a lot about them, including who's worth a closer friendship and who's best to keep as acquaintances.

128: No, no, there's no rule that says that you must be turned on by your ships. Slash isn't automatically porn.

141: I've never understood why it's so important to some people to have read something at a particular point in time. I'm just happy when my friends discover anime I love so I can talk to them about it!

149: I just finished the anime today (I was planning to watch it sooner, but couldn't find the time until recently) and I loved it. Including the ending. But it's not like we were told exactly what happened, right? They both survived, so anything is possible.

150: Congratulations on resembling an awesome character! Too bad your mother has strange ideas about the power of anime...

166: I think he does an awesome parody of several of the characters, especially Kaiba, but I don't think everything he does is super-special-awesome (yeah, yeah, sorry).

OH MY GOD YOU

I went to elementary school with her. And she was a royal BITCH to me so I still hate it whenever people freak out about her. We went to a gymnastics camp thing at my summer daycare and she would always be incredibly intense about everything. So when she was on TV I just seethed whenever people were like "oh, she's so cool!" when I just remember her as a conceited bitch.

It's SO refreshing seeing ONE PERSON with the same view.

Re: 122

[identity profile] nirejseki.livejournal.com 2009-04-01 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, trust me, it's not just you and OP. She always creeped me the hell out when I saw her on TV and such, and I know a lot of people with similiar feelings on the subject. ^^

148. Ah, wow. I just saw the movie for the first time tonight, anyway (secret being that I was actually kindasorta curious and had an excuse because it's not like I chose to watch it...) and beforehand, I heard that music from my favorite band would be in it, and was wondering if that would "ruin" it, like it ruined sparkles for you or vampires for the "classic" vampire fans! (And I ended up giggling uncontrollabley when that song came on, anyway, because I was thinking "Hah, you can't ruin that for me!")

152. Erh, I'll admit, several of my friends are...the type of people that phrase is useable around. And another secret is that, well...I think phrases like that are actually kinda cute and fun, I mean, come on, anything that started with a picture of a fuzzy stretched-out oversized cat just HAS to be fun! (Secret because most people find "internet speak" obnoxious)

111, 117, 128, 139, 151, 159

[identity profile] arcadiaego.livejournal.com 2009-04-01 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
111: I saw it more as Naomi being scared to admit she wasn't straight, not that she was pressured into saying she's something she isn't. And seeing as there is a long and disturbing history of trying to make gay people 'become straight' yes, the reverse situation would have been very offensive. However, what *actually* happened in the show wasn't.

117: I don't read very much femmeslash because most of it doesn't do anything for me, even though I'm attracted to women as well as men in real life. There's nothing "wrong with f/f on principle" it's just not my thing.

128: You're not. Everyone's different.

139: John Cleese's rage vs the shopkeeper refusing, against mounting odds, to admit that the customer is in fact right. i.e. the British shopping experience. Plus John Cleese losing it is funny. It's probably something to do with us all being repressed.

151: Don't be an elitist ass. How do you *know* all the Who fans are in it simply for the pretty. (And are you suggesting no one ever fancied an old school Doctor?) And what's wrong with fancying actors anyway? It's what people do, "geeks" included. Why the blazes do you think they used to get Kirk to make out with an attractive woman every other week?

159: It isn't.

I don't have anything against F/F ships, it's just not as interesting to me as M/M. I freely admit I'm in it for teh buttsexz. Also the fandoms I'm in don't have interesting female characters to slash.

Re: 117

(Anonymous) 2009-04-01 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
I thought there were plenty of interesting female characters in One Piece, if that is indeed one of your fandoms. But hey, I don't really like Sanji, so obviously YMMV, as the saying goes.

101) Man, screw anyone that'll look down on you for that. You like what you like. I only have a problem with people who are all like, "IM A HARDCOOOORE GIIRL GAAAAMER I HAVE BOOBS BUT ILL KICK YOU ASSSSSS RAAAAAGHHHHH PHEEEER" but then rarely stray outside of stuff that their boyfriend plays or has a huge yaoi fandom. Other than that, it's perfectly fine to not play many games or only a limited genre or two and still call yourself a gamer. :D

102) Pff, seriously? Man, if anything that game had the opposite effect on me. They kind of go out of their way to point out how brainless and vain fashion these days is, and basically the "best" stuff doesn't match at all. That and you can easily beat the entire game never bothering with it once. :P But, that's cute: "Am I brave enough to wear this?"

105) *Nosebleed* Man, I'm not what you'd call a chubby chaser, but DAT ASS

117) *Shrug* You like what you like. I'd say more but I'll probably end up offending someone by being insensitive.

128) I can relate. I appreciate M/M and F/F stuff just fine, but it's gotta be M/F for me to get turned on at all. Not sure why, you'd have to ask my penis, not me.

136) I... Wow. I just can't like him. Robin is my favorite character. D:

139) Even as a Python fan, I can say it's an acquired taste, and somewhat overrated. Also if it's not your thing, then it's just not your thing. Just please, please tell me you don't prefer the internet's new brand of "random" humor like the travesty that is Rathergood to this.

143) I... *Forcibly holds mouth closed with hands.*

150) You should have also made it a secret because the few pervy guys that frequent this comm like myself immediately perk up when we hear a phrase such as, "...I look just like Rangiku". :P Anyway, there's no shame in being inspired by something you like to try something different!

152) I'm surprised they don't know that meme. It's been around for a while now, and isn't restricted to (nor did it start in) anime fandoms.

166) Those are nice arrows, at least, for MS Paint. :D
