Yeah, I'm getting about forty percent 'female characters just suck/aren't as interesting in my fandoms', about thirty percent 'but it's just about the porn, innit', and about 30 percent agreement.

Hello. Obvious TAS fan here 8U

There are a fair number of people that don't like Martin's work. They've made themselves fairly known. No, you're not a bad Yuugimons fan if you don't like him or whomever that other person is. See? I don't even know them.

People like what they like. And popular things are popular for a reason, even if they are overhyped to a degree.

It's just, ffs why are people under the impression that if you don't like [insert popular thing from fandom] that you're a bad fan? It's stupid. Seriously. And if someone calls you a bad fan because you don't like it, then they're the idiot.

TL;DR FANDOM IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN, STOP MAKING IT SRS BSNS.

137 - I feel like a bad fan - I like Dani, but I'm really going to miss Jane if/when she leaves.

151 - I kind of get where you're coming from, except wtf TOS had pleeenty of pretty people in it.

Who cares? And I mean that in the most positive way.

By some definition, I'm considered to be a 'stereotypical' girl gamer - only because I fit the requirements of 'a person who games who happens to also have a vagina'.
For the record: I'm a huge MGS fan- jesus, for 10 years, already. I like Katamari Damacy, and I've been a huge JRPG fan since I was a little girl. This doesn't reduce any 'gamer cred' or make me any less of a gamer.
Conversely, I do genuinely like games like Call of Duty 4, or WoW- but that shouldn't make me this uber gamer, either. You like what you like, and that's that.

What I'm trying to say is: man, it really doesn't make a difference as to what games you like. As long as you are enjoying yourself, and you like them, what does it matter what anyone else thinks? Why should you let other people's opinions water down your enjoyment?

You can't change anyone's opinions, so you may as well pay no mind to their pettiness and just have fun with your games. Life's too short to worry about what other people think of you.

edit!;
Conversely, don't be fake, either. From what I understand, it's actually more of a stereotype for a girl to fake enjoying 'popular' games for the sake of fitting in. If something doesn't float your boat, just say so, anon.

Trouble is, there are so many generations of Trek fans.

There's those who got into it right at the start. Those who got into it when TOS was being repeated. And those who sorta trickled in after. There's those who got into it when TNG came out, when DS9 came out, when Voyager came out and so on so forth. This is simply another wave.

Personally? I grew up on TNG (literally), it came out the year I was born but DS9 is my fave. And that series happens to have a damn good looking cast in my opinion. Siddig is one hell of a good looking man, for example.

That said, I can see what you're worried about - it's a point. But so long as they make a point to look at and understand the original text you can't get after them too much. Those joining in due to the movie may be a new and scary wave but it's perfectly possible that they'll become actual Trekkers rather than movie!Trek fangirls and fanboys.

You seem very wise, especially the last paragraph. Coming new into an established fandom, you DO have to hold your tongue for a while and understand the dynamics of longer fans and what they like, IMO.

151. Really? I know DW fandom has a lot of crazy, but it was through New Who that I got into Old Who and I made a bunch of really lovely friends. Because of one of my Old Who friends I rented the TOS DVDs and enjoyed them waaaaay more than I did as a kid.

As far as I'm concerned, the best thing that could happen because of the ST movie is new fen do a similar parallel to the DW fen and check out TOS. Also, I personally find the real TOS cast more attractive by far than the new ones.

But it's clear that you have a grudge, and I'm not even going to address your "we're geeks we don't need the pretty" because WTF?

166. Browsing some of these replies... You know, I'm thinking the bit on Scrib is a bit off, considering how many people DON'T KNOW WHO SHE IS. Seems pretty fail, imo.

Re: 166

[identity profile] astraybucanneer.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't say this for certain, but perhaps that's just because not very many people know what she looks like? LK has posted more videos and pictures of himself than Scrib has so he's fairly recognizable, even if I'm sure a fair amount of people can remember her username from ff.net.

Yeah, I'm not even sure if this matters. I can see what you're saying, and for the most part, I agree. Not quite sure whether to be annoyed, confused, or just put off by this secret. :|

Well, a lot (not all, but a lot) of slash is erotic in intent. Or has some erotic/romantic content by definition (certainly romantic if not erotic, otherwise it would be "gen" fic).

And a woman who is very straight in orientation, is not attracted romantically or sexually to other women, may very likely not be interested in reading femmeslash for that reason. I don't see it as such a big deal. My SO is a very, very straight male and I certainly wouldn't expect him to be all that enthused about reading m/m slash fic. Nor would I get all upset about that being the case.

That doesn't mean I think it's cool to go "ew! femmeslash!" any more than it's cool to go "ew! slash!" or even "ew! gen!" If something's not your cuppa, just let it be. But you can't *force* someone to like a particular kind of fic either if it's not to their tastes or interests...

108. LOL worst show EVER. At least, in my opinion :D I don't hate the ship any, just. Seriously. Worst ever.

117. I don't see why just liking m/m is a bad thing. That's just my preference. I read fic for the pr0n. If that makes me a bad person, that's fine. I ship people who's relationship I find interesting and all that, but I'm essentially reading because it's hot and entertaining. Not because I have to "on principle" to be considered an adequate slash fan. I don't seek fic for people I ship if I'm not gonna find it hot, you know?

121. LOLOLOL!! I'm not part of the House fandom, but that secret had me laughing hard for some reason. Great wording.

135. Song is SEXY. Just saying.

117) Slash is not really slash, no. It used to be a catch-all term, if I recall, but when people started using terms like fem(me)slash to separate lesbian sex from gay sex, the meaning of slash shifted to become male-male only.

138) Who is that? He reminds me of a scruffier version of chef Aaron Sanchez and it's really messin' with my head.

143) I have some bad news for you, OP.

149) Are you a Zutara fan by any chance? Something seems familiar and I can quite place--oh, wait. Same delusional batshit, different pairing and fandom.

111. eh, I get your point, but I didn't see it as Emily pressuring her. she kissed her at the party and Naomi clearly didn't mind, and from that point on, she definitely wasn't saying "I'M NOT GAY OK" any more. she's bi. appreciate it, cause according to most tv shows, we don't exist.

124, dude. even if your flist doesn't understand, it's YOUR journal, not theirs. what's the worst that could happen? they unfriend you? and that'd be pretty fucking crazy if anyone took you off their flist because of a fandom-related comm you joined. realistically, maybe a few of them would just go "um. really?" and you'd say "YES. 158, bahaha again. it's not EVERYONE, just more people than expected.

too-big secret 1...OMG.
