117. Slash is slash, yeah, but "slash" is defined as boy/boy slash. It just is, the etymology of the word goes that way. "Femslash" is by definition different from slash - that's why it has a different word. Besides, if we go with your definition, "slash is slash" should also apply to "fic is fic", and we all know not all fic is created equal.

Besides, some people just pick a pairing that they like based on the characters they like. If they happen not to like the female characters of their particular fandoms, that doesn't mean they chose to like their pairings just because of the hot factor rather than the character. I read both slash and femslash, but in some fandoms I'm slash-only, in others I'm het-only, in others I'm femslash-only - in other words, I'm a shipper. By definition, I exclude some ships from what I like. It happens. It may even happen that some people don't like female characters in most/all of their fandoms - it doesn't mean they just like characters they find hot. It may just mean that the fandoms they like just have boring female characters.

148. XD! That's a new one, and I like it!

161. ..Yea, I have to admit I think you're not..actually watching the show if you can't see the Sheldon-Penny chemistry :/ It's there.

134. I know exactly how you feel. I want to see those episodes so badly but at the same time I'm afraid of it, because it's gonna mean there is nothing left. The fact that there will be no proper ending doesn't help.

158. Great. So we've had the "I'm so weird and original because I'd hit Rorschach" secrets, and now the "I'm so weird and original because I wouldnt hit Rorschach" ones started, too. Is it really that hard to see that no matter what you think about Rorschach you're not weird nor original at all, because freaking thousands of other people feel the same about him? Just... guh.

101. If you're playing JRPGs for the gameplay, then you aren't a stereotypical Girl Gamer.

Really, i'd take one who only plays FF over ones who act like Lara Croft or Samus or something is some huge power symbol. They're some huge something symbol alright

153: Naaahhh I'm pretty sure it's just more insanity.

[identity profile] kinosino.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey now. Samus is great. Metroid is a great game, she hardly ever removes her armor (at least not until the graphics caught up with her figure :\), and she kicks considerable ass in Super Smash Bros.

Lara Croft, though, is indeed a crappy Indiana Jones-with-boobs! cash-in with none of Indy's compelling gameplay. Even my husband, the biggest perv/gamer in the world, says Lara Croft games suck.

I totally feel you on that. I kinda wish I did play some "boy games" (whatever that means), just because I'd like to work in video games sometime, and most video games are made by boys. But I really have no interest in playing FPSes, fighting games, WoW or whathaveyou. It sucks that that then generates some kind of stereotype. :/

Re: 101

[identity profile] kinosino.livejournal.com 2009-03-31 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
WoW's not a girl game? But it has pretty elves and sparkly magic and and--!!

Really, no matter what games you play, people are still gonna find a way to make you out to be a stereotype. The fighting games I like have cutesy Nintendo characters and omg Snake!!!, or omg character customization with pretty pretty clothes!!! (Soul Calibur). Hell with it.

105. It's probably a horrible sign that for the first few months of investigating watchmen, I thought Nite Owl II was female because I kept coming across her instead of actual information. I didn't find out she was actually a he until I eventually tracked down scans of the comic almost a year later and went, hang on a minute.

117. I think the term implying one enjoys femslash get called femslashers and if you slash both you get called indiscriminate slashers

111 - i never really interpreted naomi's sexuality that way. i was more under the impression that she acted like she didn't care what people thought about her when in actuality she did. therefore, at first, she denied any accusations towards her sexuality - which i think is fairly realistic considering the verbal abuse she gets from katie at the beginning.

where i don't think naomi is one hundred per cent gay, i also don't think emily really 'forced' naomi into anything. emily liked naomi and therefore she went for it and in the end it was more naomi who kind of strung emily along.

117. I agree to an extent. I mean, porn is porn, and people are turned on by different things -- no shame in that at all. A lot of fandom is made up of straight women, and a lot of straight women aren't going to be turned on by girl bits; I totally get that. But while a lot of fic is/involves porn, not EVERY fic does. There's fluff and angst and action/adventure with romance on the side...

So when I see someone list a whole bunch of pairings, het and slash, canon and non-canon and crack, and there is not a single femslash pairing among them... it upsets me, a little. I vastly prefer femslash, and that's most of what I read, but there are usually at least a couple of het and slash pairings I find cute/fascinating/hilariously awesome. I'D TOTALLY READ JEAN ARMSTRONG/TIGRE JUST THROWING THAT OUT THERE. So I wonder.

I do think I've found some explanation though: attraction. If I find a character attractive, I pay more attention to them. I notice the nuances in their actions and speech; I think about their motivations more, because I like thinking about them. So, simply by virtue of being attractive, they become more interesting characters in my eyes because I've devoted time to fleshing them out in my mind. And because I find them interesting, I want to read about them. Just something I've been thinking about.

#161 - I lean towards Sheldon/Penny and away from Leonard/Penny, but I TOTALLY understand what you mean. I hate it when a fandom is completely dominated by a certain ship. I like thinking outside the box and think L/P fans should have their own rightful place of comfort in the fandom as well! :)

124 - Why is everyone always SO CONCERNED about how PEOPLE IN THE INTARWEBZ will view them? If you honestly are interested in the community, why not join it?

128 - I don't necessarily get turned on by pornfic. I enjoy good writing, whether it's erotic or not. I don't think you're "doin it rong" or anything 8D

139 - I think that sketch is all right, but the Lumberjack Song is funnier. There's plenty of Monty Python that I think is kind of wtf and not as funny as anyone else thinks. :\

I think the issue is that some people read fanfic solely for the porn, and some don't.

If you're only reading fic for porn, and you're primarily attracted to men, then it makes sense to want men in all your porn. But if you're reading fic to fulfill emotional kinks rather than sexual ones, then I think the genders involved matter a whole lot less, regardless of your orientation.

Reading for one reason isn't any more valid than reading for the other.

101: There's no stereotype there. If you enjoy FF for their gameplay AND guys in stupidly skimpy clothes, you aren't a stereotype.

Really, the entirety of gaming culture seems to of fallen into some sort of trap. Anything that has a gun is for men, and anything with sir spiky haired the fifth in short shorts is for women and pre-teens.

It's just kind of stupid, especially considering I'm male, and only like like five first person shooters. (Which I suppose might seem like a lot but trust me when 50% of the industry is those, it's not) and instead play mostly strategy games, RPGs, Strategy RPGs, RPG strategy, and games in which little girls shoot lasers at each other for no real reason.

WOO POINTLESS WALL OF TEXT NO ONE CARES ABOUT.

140. Now I really intensely want to read this. As a gen fic or an OT3 fic?

151. Calm down! You're right, it's inevitable that people will jump on the reinvigorated boat just because of the pretty faces. We can only hope the new fans find something deeper--if the movie provides that--or that they choose to do some homework and watch past shows. In any case, the fans you're worried about won't hang around for long... even if the movie is a gigantic success, six months from now it'll be the tried and true fans that remain.

Oh, but what do you mean, we don't need pretty faces? Star Trek is filled with pretty faces! I'll grant you, not all are as traditionally attractive as the people on, say, Gossip Girl but they were still very hot. Nimoy and Shatner were damn fine back in the day and no way would I kick Kelly out of bed. Pretty is what initially drives a lot of people to shows and movies but you have to have hope that the heart of Trek isn't lost in all the epic CGI space battles.

That's very possible. For a long time in school friends of mine were like "OMG you have to SEE this" and one even gave me a transcript of the sketch, and I never "got" it, but I figured it was all about the delivery... and then when I finally sat down with it I ended up feeling sad for the poor mistreated parrot more than anything.

111- I understand what you're saying and have had my feathers fluffed that way before, and IDK the fandom, BUT there is a whole different psychology between getting into a straight relationship and a gay one. Maybe they're doing it wrong, but yeah, a lot of people haven't...even if they've pondered homosexuality, it's never really been something they've thought of without a little nudging.

117- Well, there's always the fact they may just not have any couples they like. I have a hard time finding girl/girl couples *I* like, and I have no issues with femmeslash as a concept. It's just...harder to find good quality of it period, and then harder to find characters I like IN it...
