Another thin weekend on the secrets front, glad I wasn't at work. None of these, from Friday onwards, would have seen me through a shift.

Stop being an entitled whiny brat and make your own secrets then, ideally not even more shitty troll secrets.

I hope your boss finds out you're reading F!S instead of working, you lazy brat.

AO3 question

(Anonymous) 2024-05-12 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Is there a way to post a fic on AO3 so it's only visible to myself? Drafts get deleted after a month or so.

One of my favourite authors deleted their fics. I was able to retrieve some of them using the wayback machine but only in chaptered form, which is an annoying way to read fics to me.

Is there a way to unload the fic to AO3 but in a way that it's only visible to me? AO3 would be the easiest and most comfortable way for me to read the fics, but obviously I don't want them public in any way.

Re: AO3 question

(Anonymous) 2024-05-12 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's a function on AO3 since its an archive meant for everyone/or anyone signed on.
However, if you have an account on here or are willing to create one specifically for fanfics - you can post it and set it on private so that no one but you can read it - plus you can tag it and put it behind a cut so that you can organize it. That's what I've been doing with half-written fics that I'm working on.

Set pairing as No Pairing and No Warnings and No Sex

Nobody on AO3 will ever look at it, I guarantee it. They are horny little bastards over there, they won't look at stuff they can't get their masturbation material from.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-12 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you tried contacting the author to ask if they're willing to provide a copy in a better format, or if they've re-posted them elsewhere themselves. Re-uploading deleted fics to the very site they author deleted them from is kind of a dick move, even if the intent is to make them private.

Re: AO3 question

(Anonymous) 2024-05-12 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
One, start downloading fics. Two, just copy and paste each chapter onto a google doc as one document. Keep it forever.

This is the answer.

In my say we'd print our fics out for reading offline, it was too expensive to read them logged in.

AO3 is not an appropriate platform to meet this need.

Yes, you can create a Collection by going to the Collections option on your dashboard, click the New Collection button, give it a name, then tick the Moderated, Closed, Unrevealed and Anonymous boxes, then add the fics you want to keep to yourself to the collection.

Save it as a word document? Or other office based equivalent, that's how I save the fic I want to re-read because then I don't even need to be connected to the internet to read them.

Or I suppose a private Dreamwidth blog could work too? It depends on how you want it formatted I suppose.

Do you watch stuff on the Internet Archive?

(Anonymous) 2024-05-12 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I've just found a childhood show I use to watch called The Animals of Farthing Wood on there and watched the Cutie Honey movie on there the other day. Plus I found an account with a lot of Anime OVAs uploaded on there that I intend to go through too.

I was just curious if anybody else watches anything on there and if they wanted to share?

I didn't know you could watch stuff! I used to love Animals of Farthing Wood - I'll definitely take a look!

Now and again, I use it more for music (such as albums with defunct labels, where the musicians are deceased, that are extremely hard to find legit and high quality versions of). Great resource!

Age Gap Question

(Anonymous) 2024-05-12 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
The comments of an Instagram post have me wondering about age gap perceptions, so I figured I'd ask around to get some input. This goes for age gaps of at least ten years.

-Are there certain demographics you think (or have observed) have more objections to large age gaps in any capacity?

-Do you think there's a point at which large age gaps become less of an issue? If so, what is that point?

I think age gaps are mostly an issue with
a) people who don't have many rl examples of relationships with age gaps in them to observe and learn from and
b) kids and teens who look at people 5 years older / younger than them, see how adult / juvenile they are in comparison, and don't have the rl experience to understand that the major life experiences and development they have or will go through in 5 years as a kid or teen is nowhere near as dramatic for, say, a 30 year old.

Age gaps are fine in anime. Also a media with 100+ year creatures. Like LoTR, for example.
It's also accepted more if a man is older than a woman.

Re: Age Gap Question

(Anonymous) 2024-05-12 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
In real life age gaps are a shortcut we use to assess power imbalances. A 40 year old has more life experience than an 18 year old and can use that to manipulate the 18 year old into decisions that are not in the younger person's best interest. That's why age gaps get less and less relevant as the younger person gets older. A 20 yr old with a 30 yr old? Sus. A 40 yr old with a 50 yr old? Why bother bringing it up.

In fiction I love age gaps for the inherent power imbalance.

I agree with the person who said that conservatives make age gaps less of an issue, but usually only in one direction. As long as the woman is younger than the man, that's as it should be (they love marrying an underaged girl to an adult man).

Re: Age Gap Question

(Anonymous) 2024-05-12 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It's WAY less of an issue once the younger party is an adult with life experience/money-- and that's different for different people. Someone who made it big somehow at a young age and won't be financially dependent on an older partner, and who has seen something of the world isn't in the same position as someone who was more sheltered, or who can't support themselves.

There was a relationship with a sizable age gap in my family, between two people who met as adults and had similar interests, education, same general field, compatible outlooks on life. And like... yes, when you enter into a relationship with a much older partner, you take into account what it's going to be like to outlive them and all that, but accidents and illnesses happen to people all the time and people can be widowed at any age. I know secondhand that it's very possible for a relationship like that to be built on mutual trust and respect, and for the families of the couple to approve and view it as totally normal-- why wouldn't two adults who are in the same field and have the same hobbies want to see each other socially, and why couldn't those two people hit it off even if they're not the same age?

As for fictional couples... whether or not there's an age gap is not something I tend to think about, tbh. There's a ship I don't like where the age gap is the kind of minor thing that romeo and juliet laws are for, there's another ship where one character is 50+ years older than the other and I ship it like crazy. And I get why the age gap is a factor for people who don't like one or the other, but like... for me it's a question of chemistry, of whether I think two characters are good for each other... occasionally if I think they're bad for each other in an entertaining way, but the big age gap ship is one where I think they're the best people for each other.

How do you stop thinking about negative/stressful things/bad memories/etc. ?

(Anonymous) 2024-05-12 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always been someone who has anxieties and worries a ton, usually about things that I realize are ridiculous and will never happen, but that doesn't stop me from worrying about them. I also will be trying to sleep, or even just doing something in the middle of the day, and a horrible thought will come into my head...either replaying something traumatic that happened in the past or a random awful thing that worries me. When that happens I try to just put it out of my mind and think about something positive/happy instead. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but when it doesn't work immediately, my thoughts will eventually wander onto something else anyway, and I won't think about it anymore.

From time to time I talk to my mom about these sorts of things, and she says that when she has a negative thought, she will think about something good instead, and it will go away, and that it always works since she's had plenty of practice at it. She's super into self help books and recommended one that she thought would help me. I am not interested in self help books at all and have never read one in my life, but I was sick of this issue I'm having so I borrowed the book she mentioned and started reading it last night. I only read the first couple chapters, but it said that not thinking about negative things or thinking about positive things instead absolutely does not work because trying not to think of something means you will think of absolutely nothing else. Since it also mentioned something about looking forward to 2020, I realized it was written pre-pandemic, and I feel like that was such a huge trauma for pretty much everyone in the world that a self-help book written before then can't possibly properly address things that people are feeling now, so I just put the book aside.

Anyway, last night when I was trying to sleep, I was having the negative thoughts, and trying to think of positive things instead did not work. I absolutely could not think about anything else no matter what. I feel like the stupid book cursed me or something and now I'm doomed to forever think about awful things when I'm trying to fall asleep. One of the happy/positive things I would think about as I was trying to fall asleep was stories I wanted to write and it would help relax me, and now I feel like that's something that's been taken away from me.

I feel like most people would suggest therapy, but 1) I can't afford it right now and 2) I've had a bad experience with a therapist in the past and really don't feel like it would help. I really don't know what to do though.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of thing? What helps?
