Old movies you still enjoy...

(Anonymous) 2024-09-21 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I realize "old" can have a wide interpretation, but I guess let's say pre-2000? (And it hurt me a little to type that, after realizing that 2000 was nearly a quarter century ago.)

Not a movie but a German New Year's Eve tradition: Dinner for One. I know the whole thing by heart now but it's still a joy to watch each NYE.

Recently rewatched Real Genius for the 4798327589472389th time.

Also:
Die Hard
Silence of the Lambs
Back to the Future series
The Fifth Element
The Goonies
Hocus Pocus
The Princess Bride
Adventures in Babysitting
Apollo 13
Beetlejuice
Ghostbusters
et al

Honestly, there are more "old" movies that I enjoy than current movies.

Lots. Tons of horror like The Thing, Alien, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street series, The Fog, Night of the Living Dead, etc. Most of my favorite Disney movies are pre 2000s. Tons of drama, like Schindler's List, The Green Mile, The Truman Show, American History X.

I'm embarrassed these movies are considered "old". I love a lot of movies that were made in the 30's, 40's and 50's, ffs!

I blame my Dad for getting me into really old films, so my range of 'old movies' is pretty wide and go back to the silent era (which reminds me that I still need to check out The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, so this might be my first spooky movie of October).

To name a few Vincent Price movies - Comedy of Terrors (1964) and The Raven (1963). They're both pretty fun movies to watch and I quote Comedy of Terrors an annoying amount.

To throw in a list of favorites:
The Producers (1967)
Young Frankenstein (1974)
The Marx Brothers: A Night at the Opera (1935)
Hello Dolly (1969)
Harvey (1950)
Carry on Screaming (1966)
Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)
The Court Jester (1955)
The Children's Hour (1961)
Highlander (1986)

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Airplane! yet in this thread. That one is absolute gold! I also never tire of Beavis and Butt-Head Do America or 12 Monkeys.

Actors you thought would make it big vs. actors who actually did

(Anonymous) 2024-09-21 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you ever watched a TV show/movie and thought "Wow, that actor is going to be HUGE one day" only you were wrong?

Re: Actors you thought would make it big vs. actors who actually did

(Anonymous) 2024-09-21 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Jaye Davidson, but I think that was more because he didn't want to act anymore. I remember hearing that he demanded a ridiculously high (at the time) salary for Stargate to encourage them to ask someone else and they just gave it to him.

I thought Harry Lloyd would be a star. He’s an amazing actor but somehow just never got the right roles I guess.

Not mine, but my parents thought Peter Scolari would be the next big thing when they first saw Bosom Buddies... where his costar wound up becoming one of THE most widely-beloved actors of basically the last forty-odd years.

I thought both Thora Birch and Mena Suvari would become A listers. Same with Christina Ricci.
But maybe I just stanned indie darling actresses who also did teen comedies in the late 90s-2000s

Quvenzhane Wallis. Everyone thought so, and then Annie 2014 was a flop, but I didn't think that would be enough to kill her career. Haven't heard anything about her since.

Secrets you don't want to make...

... but you wouldn't mind if someone else made them for you! As always, including the fandom and full character names is a big help, and while I'm definitely not the world's greatest expert at secret design, I'll try my best. Please note that secrets with lots of text are sometimes difficult to accommodate and I'll give it a shot but might not be able to make secrets where the text is so lengthy that I can't fit it into the limited space.

I'll monitor this thread until tomorrow's secret post goes up, so feel free to leave your comments until then!

Yours truly,

a secret maker

P.S. Please don't worry if you've submitted a secret and it hasn't been posted yet. I usually post these threads before running out of the previous batch of secrets to get a head start on the next batch.

I tend to get obsessed with things that rarely have any fandom or critical media surrounding it. Comedies. Standalone novels with no real fanbase. Old movies. If I do find someone talking about it, it'll be a DW entry or YouTube video from three years ago.

Sometimes I still comment. They never respond.

I want to indulge in my current obsession, damn it.

Seats as surfaces

(Anonymous) 2024-09-22 02:00 am (UTC)(link)

Do you have someone in your life who treats seats as surfaces? As in, chairs and sofas get treated as something to put stuff on, whether it be laundry or paperwork or books or hobby supplies, hindering your ability to sit anywhere?

My partner does this, and it's starting to drive me mad. He leaves the seats he wants to sit in clear. All other seats in the house get filled up with his stuff. Tonight, he apologized for the laundry all over the couch. "I'll get that upstairs tonight," he said. "Wouldn't it be easier to just fold it upstairs?" I asked. His reply: "for some reason, I don't like folding it in the bedroom."

I just wanted to scream: I don't give a shit if you don't like folding clothes in the place where the fucking clothes go! Figure it the fuck out already! You are 43 years old, and this thing you are hung up on makes no sense! And what's more, it negatively impacts the other people living in your house, in the sense that we cannot sit on seats because you have covered all the seats with items.

I perhaps wouldn't be so mad had I not worked very hard over the years on the things that piss him off about me. But he just gets to say, "FOR SOME REASON I DON'T LIKE DOING THE SENSIBLE ADULT THING TO DO SO I, A SUPER LOGICAL MALE BEING WHO IS DEFINITELY NOT SUBJECT TO EMOTIONAL BULLSHIT, AM ENTITLED TO CONTINUE BEING A FUCKING SLOB!"

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm sick of my male partner acting like it's some sort of horrible imposition on him to expect that he will not prevent me and his child from being able to sit anywhere due to the bizarre fucking damage that he refuses to deal with because I'M A MAN AND EVERYTHING I FEEL IS VERY IMPORTANT AND LOGICAL SO HOW DARE YOU QUESTION IT.
