Making peace with Trump voters in our lives (or not)

(Anonymous) 2024-11-07 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Two extended family members voted for Trump. I need to say that these people have been instrumental in my life; I've been through things that could have been even worse were they not there. They're otherwise nice, kind, GOOD PEOPLE. And yet, they voted for Trump. I'm finding it incredibly difficult to reconcile, to forgive.

Anyone else dealing with this?

Someone who I respected, who has brought us a lot of cases, told me yesterday he voted for Trump. And that he thought Harris was horrible and would have been awful for the country. My mind is boggled. This guy brings us immigration clients. He cares about immigrants. And he's a defense attorney. Yet he voted for Trump. I just don't get it.

I cut them out of my life.

Everyone in my family who voted for the turd I had already cut out of my life due to assholery. Get rid of 'em. Sit down with nazis and you become a nazi. There is no such thing as a good nazi.

I'd also find it incredibly hard to forgive and/or reconcile. I'd have to ask myself in coldly pragmatic terms... do I need these people for something? Money, a potential kidney/liver donation down the line? How much do I have to have them in my life? I don't keep people in my life just because we share ties of flesh and blood, mind you, so "because they're family" doesn't fly with me if there are good reasons why I wouldn't tolerate such behavior from strangers.

And keep in mind that even if you forgive them, that doesn't mean you have to keep them in your life. I'd actually advise caution. You might think they're good people, but at minimum, they've demonstrated some extremely poor, damaging judgment, or a huge deficit in their intelligence and ability to reason and empathize. That's the best possible interpretation. How many opportunities do you want to give them to make bad decisions that will harm you, is what I'm asking? Because now you know you cannot trust them to NOT do that.

The worst interpretation is that they're not as good as you think, which is why they voted for a rapist felon who incites violence and hatred.

Jesus never said to hate your family by telling John and Mary "this is your son/mother". Instead, if your family pull you away from what's right, what is G-d, then you have to separate yourself from that to do what is right.

Sometimes you have to walk alone.

I have to say I'm in a little better place today. Got past the shock and horror and grief. He can't just deport everyone right away, he still will have to follow the law to at least an extent. There are things that can be done to stand up to him. And immigration attorneys can still help their clients. It is going to be difficult, depressing work, but we should at least be able to help some.

I reminded my mum this morning that she said "I think he'll make an interesting president" wayyyy back in 2016. She was like "was I wrong?"

I don't want an "interesting" president in charge of one of the world's most powerful countries. I want a NORMAL one who cares about the populace. The queer, the immigrants and the homeless included. I want a normal one that's not going to go to war at the drop of a hat or take black money from Russia and Israel or needs another nepo baby to be his hype man and fund his campaign.

Re: Elections/Politics thread

(Anonymous) 2024-11-07 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Biden wasn't perfect but he was closer to that than Trump will ever be, and I know Harris would have been too.

I don't want to hear the caterwauling of a rapidly decomposing scrotal wart all over the internet while his cronies give us higher prices and less safety and fewer rights in real life. I want a stable life with housing I can afford and basic needs I don't have to go bankrupt to meet, because my President puts the country's needs over their own selfishness.

Well, there's a reason why the likely fake anecdote about the sentence "May you live in interesting times" being a curse got so much traction.

I have yet to see someone actually explain why they feel a convicted felon is better than a prosecutor as a President and it's exceedingly depressing. Y'all the bar is in hell.

I think for some people, the ACAB has been so ingrained in their thoughts that every prosecutor is evil by default and every convicted felon is some innocent misunderstood little rebel who fights against the system.

Re: Elections/Politics thread

1) I think they just don't care, honestly. "Both sides are bad" + they believe democratic politicians are or should be equally guilty of the same things. To them, one happened to be convicted and the others got away with it. A prosecutor, in theory, would be part of the corrupt system and/or whatever conspiracy theories they believe in.

2) They're mad, so they vote for the guy who is mad at the same things and still saying he's going to break the things that are making them mad, without considering he has nothing and no plans to build back afterward. Trump 'gets it' - but if you ask them what he's going to do to realistically fix or change issues, they get vague and handwavey and don't really know, because there are no actual plans. They aren't voting for plans, is the point - they're literally voting for concepts of a plan, which cannot be bad, criticized, or picked apart and checked with logic because they don't really exist. He'll do 'something,' they're sure. If he has to break some rules to do that then maybe the rules are bad.

3) They don't believe the fascist thing and consider it hyperbole and dramatics because it is hard to believe that someone who kept almost no big promises the last time - where's the wall? wasn't he supposed to fix immigration? - around is going to turn around and change the face of the US. A lot of Trump votes are protest votes to tell the left 'fuck you,' not because they believe in the guy. Politics is a circus so you might as well elect the clown who hates all the same people you do.

Idk, does that make you like Trump voters more or less than before?

I'm feeling a mix of schadenfreude and pity after hearing that a company in PA took away their employees' Christmas bonuses this year because they needed the money to buy products ahead of Trump's tariffs. (The employees are mostly Trump voters.)

Admittedly I can't confirm this story outside of Youtube at the moment, but if it's true, people are already getting fucked and he's not even president.

I'm personally a little gobsmacked that the average voter is legitimately too stupid to understand that tariffs will increase, rather than decrease, the prices of goods; i.e., people whose main issue is "inflation" vote for a hyperinflation policy.

That said we consume too much crap, maybe it is time to retvrn to people only buying new clothes once every couple of years and households spending 50% of their income on food and only the rich being able to travel, maybe that's what'll save the environment.

I'm just hoping me and my mom can lay low, and get through this. Maybe we will actually still have some form of a government that can change this in four years, but I'm not counting on it.
I do wonder how the chuckle fucks cheering this on Xitter, and everywhere else are gonna be feeling this time next year.

Kamala was just a bad candidate who ran a bad campaign, more like a talk show host, than any other reason. Trump didn't win, Harris lost it. She's not Oprah and nobody wanted a president who ran like Oprah who wasn't actually Oprah. She was coronated instead of primaried in, she spent most of the campaign acting like she'd already won, she took advice and bragged about taking advice from Hillary "already lost to him" Clinton on how to handle the debates, and refused to advance popular policies on Palestine or economic revolutions, told us to expect more of the same when the same isn't working, has never apologized for her past as a prosecutor, and her history with Biden's milquetoast White House showed she can play hardball with poor people in court but not with her fellow Democrats on forcing them to confront issues like the most corrupt court in history.

Unless the Democrats have full clear out, really clean house, then I'm not voting for them again. The Democrats inability to do anything about their own broken system is a bigger long term danger to America than Trump is, even if he seems that way now. He can't run again, whatever happens, so this whole Presidency is Trump's lameduck Presidency, and for a dude who bases his personality on just campaigning, winning is probably the worst that can happen to him, but the Democrats always pandering to their donors, hiding from the issues, seeking to be in majority but not in power, always putting up their own internal saboteurs like Manchin to ensure they never have to take hard decisions, that is breaking the Two Party system all on its own. That is making it a one Party GOP system no matter who gets into the White House. That is what we need to fix. If the GOP are going to be in charge no matter who is in majority, they might as well be in the majority and we all admit it.

No more illusory Democrat Governments. They get their act together, or they fall and we get a new second party in a couple of decades who will. All of you freaking out, contact your democrat candidates and representatives such as remain and tell them to win next time they better start playing hardball. They go into every battle acting like they are going to win (even, and especially, like they can't) and raise holy hell if they lose. Some real fire and brimstone, and that they put their damn house in order. No more milquetoasts, no more coronations, no more party grandees, no more reliable traitors, those guys all get run out the party on a rail.

Then they'll be fit to vote for.

I'm done talking to people about who voted or didn't vote and why/why not.

By this point, we have picked a terrible choice and everyone needs to find their own ways to deal with their emotions.
I'm trying my best not to give Trump voters too much of my attention. I know they just want to revel in their win and I'm not giving them my tears or sad/angry expressions.

I'm trying to keep living my life but also keeping my ears and eyes open to see where I can be of use.

That's all I have now.

I didn't have much choice in living a life where the majority of my life is to endure and survive. I have a little more power now, and so I'm going to do my best to keep enduring and surviving.

If other people want/need to feel whatever they're feeling, they certainly should.

But I'm trying my best to focus on endurance and surviving what's going to be a very difficult near future.
