You nailed it 'nonny. Although I saw on fanficrants earlier today that people are getting all het up that the backlash 'gainst SJW is beginning. It gives me hope. The real fans are beginning to fight back.

Anyone who tries to tell you using the word stupid is stupid. I wish people that anal would shut the fuck up until they can complain about something really offensive.

I think it's the most stupid thing I've ever heard that there are some people who are policing language to the point where they claim that the word 'stupid' is ableist. I mean, I could see making that argument for the words idiot, moron, or imbecile, since they were all once medical terms for mental retardation (although I think that's going to ridiculous levels by itself), but stupid? Stupid has never meant "someone who has mental disabilities". Stupid has only ever meant "someone who is not smart."

Saying someone is being ableist for using the word stupid is, frankly... stupid.

I agree. How a word is used is way more important than what the word is. I mean some words are definitely bad enough that somebody who's not in-group pretty much can't do anything positive with them. But "stupid" or "lame" or something really are not those words.

Or "crazy". I'm mentally ill and I can't see the damn point of policing every time the word is used. If someone's trying to insult mentally ill people, they can do it with only the "correct" words. If someone's saying something neutral or actually affirming, why does it matter if they're being a little coarse?

Personally, I love the word "crazy", and I love adding modifiers to it to mean different things (crazy good, crazy awful, crazy AWESOME, etc.), but then people point out that it's ablest, and I'm always left a little O_o.

Also, stupid. Stupid works, for me. I like the word, it has a kind of flow to it.

You know... I always hold my breath when I go past a cemetery, but it has nothing to do with respect and everything to do with reading at a young age that if you breathed in/near a graveyard, lingering souls could try and possess your body.

Yep. Still freaks me out a bit...

Ironically, I hurt my own eyes immediately afterwards because I rolled them so hard.

i hate stuff like this because i feel like it can make people who are actually trying to be reasonable look really bad?

the other day i got jumped on for saying something was "pretty lame." then, more recently, someone called me a "crazy SJW" just for correcting someone's improper use of the word "transgender."

both sides need to stop tbh

[identity profile] strangetwn-god.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I just don't care about colloquial use of words like crazy, mad, insane, or nuts that have been around for over a century. But if you were going to use a technical term related to mental health/disability as an insult, that's an entirely different matter.

I used to hold my breath while going past cemeteries so that my wishes could come true. Same with crossing bridges, while soda was foaming over ice cubes, while school bells finished ringing, and tuning a guitar.

jfc my parents suck for telling me all this stupid shit as kid. I will hold my breath for them out of respect for the successful trolliness though.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-22 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
On one hand, I don't want to be ableist.

On the other hand, I'm frustrated by the self-appointed SJ language police's attempts to strip useful metaphor from the English language.

I walk with a limp and am mentally ill, among other things, and I do not object to "lame" or "crazy" used in the metaphorical sense. I object to being described as "lame" or "crazy." I do not object to a fictional character being described as "crazy," because by definition, they are unable to take offense.

The point of all this is how we treat each other, and I think the most obnoxious fandom SJers are losing sight of that.

The most ridiculous thing SJW have done has been brainwash teenagers into thinking that a miraculous cure to blindness wouldn't be an unequivocally good thing. Disabilities aren't identities, they're disabilites. They don't define who you are. I don't believe being blind makes you inferior to someone that is able to see, but the ability to see is an inherently good thing. If you were going to have a blind baby and the doctors offered to give him perfectly functioning artificial eyes for free... would you really say no?

[identity profile] fm-gatekeeper.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
I want people to be comfortable, and I mean, there are some ways of using words that are just damn offensive--I feel very uncomfortable around people who use "retard" or "gay" to describe something defective that they don't like, for instance, because in my opinion that's a horribly offensive context to use that word in.

But when it gets to the point where you're telling people who actually are in that group how they're allowed to feel, I draw the line. And that's all I see most of the hardcore people doing, nowadays.

I especially don't like it when they go around telling people who haven't made their sexuality obvious that if they're straight they should shut up. I'm bisexual, in a relationship with a person of the same gender as me, and I don't want straight people to shut up. I think everyone needs to have a place in the dialogue about sexuality for anything to get better--straight people should realize that there are probably things they're not aware of because they're straight, but they don't have to NEVER HAVE AN OPINION EVER or NEVER EXPRESS IT if they do. They just need to realize that they a queer person will probably have a more informed perspective than they do on the issues, and that they should take that into account--and half the time when it's someone they're telling to shut up, they have the same perspective that I do, and I'm not straight. Oftentimes, the people telling them to shut up are the straight ones!

Ditto for trans issues, although it bothers me less because people in general still need to be way more aware of those than they generally are. Everyone has a place in the dialogue about gender issues. Everyone.

As a queer, non-cisgendered human being... STOP IT. It's great that you feel that way, but STOP TELLING EVERYONE ELSE THAT THEY HAVE TO.

WE DON'T FUCKING NEED YOU TO SPEAK FOR US.

Let us speak for ourselves. Those of us who agree with you will agree. Those of us who disagree are not self-hating carriers of internalized bigotry--we're just different.

Isn't being different supposed to be okay?

ETA: ...WOW THAT WAS RANTIER THAN IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE oops.

To be honest, I'm too old for this shit. (Old enough to know where that's referenced from) I really could give two fucks about what someone thinks about how I speak. I generally don't insult people and if I was, well, I probably do want to get under their skin and would intentionally say something to offend them because I'm in the heat of the moment. Other than that, if someone's got a problem with it they can get over themselves and either ignore me (which is what I would do if I was them) or tell someone who gives a shit. JS

[identity profile] nyxelestia.livejournal.com 2012-02-22 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of the SJW philosophy about really nitpicky things (i.e. lame, dumb, ect.) started on the "your experiences =/= everyone else's experiences" principle, which is good - I think people need to be confronted with the fact most people don't look at the world like they do and have different life experiences to back it up.

Increasingly, though, I think SJWs need to be hit with that, too. Like, there are literally HUNDREDS of English dialects and cultures which speak English around the world. Are you going to account for all of them? "Nigger" has a very derogatory history, yet I've heard it used as a neutral or positive term just as much as a negative one. I can have the exact same friend in the exact same situation call me "bitch" in two different voices/tones, and one will be an insult and the other a compliment. Meanwhile, will I have to stop using the word "white" because for most of my life people telling me I'm "acting white" or "turning into a white girl" was an insult? Or will I have to stop using the word "Caucasian", the politically correct term for people people, because that ethnicity is used as an insult? Oddly enough, I'm pretty sure if I explain these life experiences to the vast majority of SJWs, they aren't going to start treating "white girl!" as an insult that should never be repeated and instead insist people use the term "very young Caucasian female" (though on that note, it's really not that hard to use politically correct terminology to insult someone utilizing race/sex/gender/orientation/ethnicity/religion/ability/ect.)

Like, seriously SJWs, I get the whole principle about how I can't use something with a bad history just because I've heard it in a good context in my life, but how come that principle doesn't apply to you? Why are YOUR life experiences accounting for everyone else's language use if mine can't?
