You forgot the part where you get called racist if you don't like this movie, regardless of your actual reasoning.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-23 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
came here to say this. Doubly so if you like Lottie but not Tiana.

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2012-03-24 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Lol you also get called racist for not having Tiana as your favorite Disney princess, because obviously she's the only one that people can truly identify with... or something, so if she's not your favorite, it's because she's black.

(I love the movie, but wtf.)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-23 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? Most of what I see is admittance that it didn't quite live up to the old traditionally-animated Disney features and that Tangled is fabulous spunky fun.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing is, both movies are animated with a computer. One is just 2D and the other is 3D. Nobody uses actual cels anymore in animation. So in that sense PATF really isn't "classic Disney animation" anyway.

[identity profile] othellia.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Technically they've been computer animating them since Little Mermaid and the CAPS system. Though they still count as traditionally/classically animated because every single frame is hand drawn vs creating a 3D model and manipulating it from pose to pose.

Ghibli still uses cells. Just not all of the time.

So how do you define classic Disney animation? Stuff from the 1930's? Stuff from the 50's? What about in the Dark Age? What about the Renaissance? How about Roger Rabbit? That was done on cels.

Also, I will point out that cels is often used in the business to refer to a handdrawn frame in animation, not just the celluiod itself.

I think it's perfectly okay to not like some things and like other things.

I liked about 50% of Tangled and I liked about 50% of Princess and the Frog. I also think it's okay to like the animation style and not the movie. I love the animation and the music in Princess and the Frog but I'm not a super fan of the plot/flow (too rushed, not enough Doctor Facilier, etc.). The animation in Tangled was meh but the movie was more "conventional story" so I know why people like it more - even if I thought all the songs but the first one were kind of crap and most of the movie made me roll my eyes.

Also I know the internet will disagree but seriously : Can we please not have any more sassy horses in Disney movies? SO. OLD. HAT.

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2012-03-24 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
No. Maximus is flawless.

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't like it because I'm "specieist." I despised it that the hero and heroine spent most of their on screen time as frogs.

You must be hanging around die-hard Disney fans, because I see plenty of people who love it and admit it was flawed.

[identity profile] unicornherds.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked the animation and art, and one or two of the songs, but overall this movie fell flat for me. And I'm fine with that. I like Disney movies, but that doesn't mean I have to automatically love every single one.

[identity profile] canadian-kazz.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
If I'm really honest, I love that movie for the bad guy and little else.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I really like PatF, but it certainly had a lot of problems, the biggest (IMO) is the pacing issues. IMO Tangled is a much better film in general, and more than justified being computer animated. No worries.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-24 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I liked PatF better than Tangled due to the look of the female characters in the latter, but I see so many people loving on Tangled whereas Princess and the Frog is largely forgotten it seem.

PS - How can you not like Dr. Facilier? He had all the makings of a great villain and a fantastic song.

Well, it was iconic because it was a black Disney princess (and about time) but that doesn't mean that the movie itself was 10 kinds of awesome. Disney's been pretty hit-or-miss for a while now.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-03-24 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't like it because the "lesson" felt waaay too much like "it's wrong to be a woman with big career aspirations and no romantic aspirations, and you'll be happy once you get a man!"
Yes I know that it was supposed to be about the main character working too hard and never letting herself have fun or have a break, but the whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth. Like when it was the evil choice to get the restaurant but she had to give it up for her man; I know it was a life and death thing with the villain, but again, it's the bigger social context and the general feel that I didn't like, even if the specific situations in the movie were technically okay.

The prince reminded me of Zevran from Dragon Age, especially when he mentioned having had a "charmed life".

It's cool if you like Tangled but not Princess and the Frog.

I'm just rather sick of people assuming that I'm an animation purist (or worse, only in it for the SJ) because I like Princess and the Frog and not Tangled.

[identity profile] heron-advocate.livejournal.com 2012-03-24 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Most of the comments I've seen about these two movies in the same place seem to be along the same lines as yours. I personally liked PatF better, though I like both movies.

[identity profile] 21lights.livejournal.com 2012-03-24 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
I loved the animation in PatF, the villain was excellent, and Tiana was cool. The rest of it just didn't work for me. And I hated the sidekicks. They were just annoying.

I thought Tangles was, at the very least, a more memorable film.

In my experience, it's been the opposite. People can't shut up about "Tangled", but no love for "Princess and the Frog". As much of a die-hard loyalist I am to 2D proportional animation, I have to say that "Tangled" was better-animated and had a better script. But "Princess and the Frog" had better characters and slightly more memorable music (though both were pretty forgettable in that area). So, really, I wished they'd been smooshed together into one proper film (2D animated, of course, lolz).
