I think a lot of people in fandom are jealous of characters' hair. I'm white but my hair is very very thick and kind of troublesome to maintain, so while it's not as tough to maintain as yours sounds like I can sympathize.

Long straight hair is rather easy to maintain actually. I just have to brush/comb it everyday for about half an hour otherwise it starts getting really tangled really fast; which wouldn't be so bad except then I end up with a lot of pulled out hair in the shower.

Shampoo and conditioner would probably be the worst, since I need huge globs of the stuff to get every section. Oh and my neck starts to hurt if it starts getting too long. And I have to start putting it up whenever I sit down otherwise I risk sitting on it (and this goes double using the bathroom).

Usually I cut it by then; one time I let it grow a few inches longer but things only got more annoying.

Aww, I love Jheri curls.

You could try a straightening perm/thermal reconditioning? Mind you, it's really expensive though. But if your hair bothers you that much, you could try it at least once and see if you like it.

TBH, I've always liked curly hair myself. Mine gets somewhat curly if I cut it short, otherwise it weighs itself down and ends up straight with a few waves/curls at the bottom (and I get split ends... so many split ends! T_T ). And long hair also makes my face look pudgy.

If it's any comfort, I suspect a lot of drawn characters have long straight hair because it's easier to draw that way and still be dramatic.

Eh, long hair does look more dramatic...but this is coming from a black person who doesn't give much thought to their hair at all.

I think a lot of people are unhappy with their hair. Especially compared to beautiful animated hair.

FWIW, I have long straight hair and I can't run my fingers through it without getting tangled either. :(

I know I'm white so it's like, not the same deal, but maaan I have envied straight hair, particularly Asian/anime hair, for years. When I was twelve I was a huge fan of Hotaru from Sailor Moon (I know her hair isn't long, but it is swishy!) so I had my waist-length curly hair cut above the shoulder to look like her. Surprise surprise, my hair still was not straight, and it ended up looking like a poofball instead of Hotaru's sleek locks.

Also, I got teased for my curly hair as a child, and other kids would make comments about how you can't run your hands through it, and if you tried you'd get stuck. (And how I must use a weedwhacker to cut it, and that I must have lice, and all kinds of things.) Being able to run your fingers through it is not the metric of hair-awesomeness, so don't even bother with that. >____>

I found I had a better relationship with my hair when I tried to make it more of what it was instead of making it something else. Using straightening products and brushing it out never got me anywhere. Finding the best ways for it to curl did. Neither of us is ever going to have hair like those anime characters, but that doesn't mean our hair can't be just as awesome.

I always thought braided hair looked really nice, and that would possibly be less maintenance for you and would let you grow it long and give you that ~swish~.

Ugh, wow, anon, that sounds absolutely not fun. I can empathize a little bit; I used to have super thick long hair, and it took hours every day to wash, dry, and if I wanted to style it or something. It wasn't at all as bad as yours, but it was very unfun. Then in Feburary, I got it all chopped off to a pixie cut. And suddenly I watch all the TV shows and I'm like "I WANT THAT HAIR. WHY WAS MY HAIR NEVER LIKE THAT. I WAAAAAAAAAAANNNT" even though I'm happy with my short hair.

I guess the moral is; nobody's ever perfectly happy with their hair, ever?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeeeeaaah, I can't really blame you. Long straight stereoptypical Asian hair can be pretty darn low maintenance for those lucky enough to have the type.

[personal profile] gossy 2012-06-03 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm Asian and my hair is not fun to maintain. It is very dry and also kind of wavy but never holds any sort of color or curl. I've tried every type of conditioner and shampoo combo... I've tried coconut oil, washing it less, washing it more, sulfate-free, natural, expensive salon brands, suave, dry shampoos, whatever. It's just damaged and horrible looking. And when it gets humid outside? Forget it. There's like ten billion tiny little hairs sticking up all over the place.

Would you be willing to sacrifice your thickness for length? Because your head would thin out.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm also black with the same kind of hair (that I wear natural) and sometimes I feel the same way.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate it when media makes you feel bad about your hair. Natural hair can look just as wonderful as straight hair like this: http://neffyfrofro.tumblr.com/post/23882481460/enjoying-the-london-sunday-sun-almost-3-years

Straight, long hair is pretty overrated. I have a relaxer in my hair mostly because I'm really lazy about my hair and I can't keep up with a natural look or straighten it with a hot comb every single day. Otherwise, meh. Long hair gets so fucking annoying in the summer as well. I usually chop it short for summer because you get bored always pulling it up so you won't sweat on it.

I am looking for a way to embrace my natural hair one day as soon as I can find a few looks that look awesome on me. It feel like my hair is the wrong kind of nappy (actually thin but looks thick and ultra soft) to pull off some of the looks I want. I wish I had thick hair. LOL.

Seriously, look in some natural hair tumblr and you can find all sorts of nice natural hair styles: http://naturalbelle.tumblr.com/

Don't let it get to you. I mean, there's nothing wrong to relaxing your hair (if you can stand the pain) but there's something wrong you internalize media's measurements of beauty that you will think your hair is awful. I mean, I'm trying to let go a lot of fucking self-image damage myself.

I can kinda sympathize... while I'm white and don't have the same issues, medications I'm on (one necessary to control my hormonal disorder, the other necessary to control my autoimmune condition) have caused my hair to thin out severely. If it gets any longer than a bob, even by a couple inches, it starts falling out in clumps.

I'm not sure if this would be of use to you, but since you mentioned having trouble with your hair in general... ontd_political did an info post about black women's hair in which a lot of members shared hair tips and tricks.

I used to have really long hair that reached down to my waist at one point. It was lovely but so hard to care for because it got tangled really easily.

I got it cut down to shoulder length and layered a couple of years ago and it's much easier to care for now. Not so easy to tie up though.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm white and have a pretty thick, long-ish hair. I'm growing it and hoping to get it to hip length. I used to have very short hair most of my life. Now I have no glue how to take care of my hair and sometimes I think I should just cut it short. Short hair is the smartest style, I think. I remember when I used to get up at morning and only thing I had to do to my hair was to "brush" it with my fingers! You should definitely try short hair if you haven't already. I think black women's short hair tends to look good because they have more volume. Anyway, three hours is a lot of time to put on your hair, if I'll end up having to go trough a lot of trouble to keep my hair looking ok, I know I'll cut it short.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
My hair can't decide if it was going to be blonde or brown so it went that mousy inbetween colour. Also I have straight hair and unless it is freshly washed it has a tendency to go limp and greasy.
Once it somehow managed to go both frizzy and greasy at the same time.

I think I have the same exact hair type, anon. I wouldn't mind it if I could just manage it without all this effort, heat or product and hours of tending it. Long straight hair that isn't too thick and never frizzes seems so simple in comparison.

As a person with long straight hair I am jealous of yours. Grass is always greener eh?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
long hair isn't the easiest to maintain, either. my hair is long and basically straight, but because i keep it long the ends get super dry and ugly and it also gets tangled easily. i use a special conditioner that's like 50 dollars or something ridiculous like that to maintain moisture, and i have to comb it a lot otherwise it starts looking stringy. also long hair has no volume! anyway, what i'm trying to say is that hair is kind of a bitch to deal with no matter what (unless you're a man or are blessed with a face that actually looks good with a pixie cut). the best thing you can do is find a style that requires the least amount of maintenance for the best result.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you me, OP? ;_; Anyone with hair that doesn't friz or drive them insane should seriously be thankful for it.

[personal profile] inkedfeathers 2012-06-03 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Long hair is ridiculously hard to maintain and I'm not black, but my hair is VERY thick and brushing it, gaaaah... it's a nightmare! ;^; I can never run my fingers through my hair either. Pretty much ever. It's only after brushing (and tearing out huge clumps of hopelessly tangled-up hair in the process) and oiling does it look smooth, but it's all a liiiie. Stick your hand anywhere near it and you might not have it back.

I tend to keep mine in braids. That keeps me from having to go through the painful process of brushhing it for at least two days or so.

I love my hair's length and volume, but it's murder to brush.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-04 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Would you consider a wig, anon? I have the straight long Asian hair thing, cancelled out by having the worst high hair line ever. I actually look bald, because my hair don't start until top of my head. Thankfully wigs exist.
