Ouch.

It's pretty sad that you feel the need to include a caveat about "not being a feminist or anything." If you believe that everyone deserves equal rights, that's the definition of a feminist. If you feel uncomfortable calling yourself that, help change people's perceptions of what feminists are and what they do by standing up for the word and what you think. Hiding behind disclaimers just strengthens the power of people who say "feminazi" with a straight face and get away with it.

Are you really doing FemShep any favors by saying that?

1) Welcome to most fandoms.
2) I read pretty much anything, gen or romance, slash or no. Good writing needs no excuses.

I fully believe in equality for all, but you'll never catch me saying I'm a feminist. I've had too many bad experiences stemming from encounters with self-styled "feminists"- like having them downplay my experience of being nearly beaten to death because my attackers were girls, watching a "feminist" therapist reduce my husband to tears when he tried to seek help for PTSD stemming from him being molested as a child by a female babysitter, being told in college that my brother was going to go on a rape rampage if I let him see my dormitory...

Yeah, if that's what being a feminist is about, then fuck no. I just say I believe in equality. Because I do. None of this gender war bullshit that so many online "feminists" (and even IRL ones) espouse.

Right off the top of my head, I thought of four blind women in Marvel Comics alone. Destiny, Blindfold, Madame Web, and Alicia Masters.

Considering the "dressing like a tramp" comment I assume it's because they've got a little bit of internalized misogyny to work through...

There are probably a lot of others who feel exactly the same but hide it behind more respectable reasons like bad writing or the immoral selling out of barely re-written fan-fiction.

Feminist is just the term for it, like it or not.

O Canada, our home and native land~

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, there aren't many, but then again, there aren't many disabled people in media to begin with, but let's see...

Funny you should mention blindfolds. There is an X-Men character called Blindfold who literally has no eyes, and she covers the blank skin patches she does have with a blindfold.

There's also Madame Xanadu from DC comics and Madam Web of Marvel. And Toph from Avatar.

And do eye patches count? There's Rose Copen from Y: The Last Man, Tallulah Black from Jonah Hex, Callisto from X-Men, Ravager from DC Comics...

Or something wrong with your view of the word "feminist". Personally I'll take option B.

Since I see Toph has already been mentioned three or four times, may I also put in Terezi from Homestuck? Blind, female, awesome. :B

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Sometimes you need to humor your friends. I have a friend who is really into games like World of Warcraft. I have very little interest in the topic but I'll let her ramble on about it a couple of times a week in peace. We share lots of other interests, just not this one.

If you become too bored, it is not that hard to lead conversation to a different subject.

I'm curious why you seem to expect actors or any other celebrities to NOT have a public face and a private face. I mean, really, they're 'hiding themselves'? How DARE somebody want privacy!

Also, you've hung around Jared a lot to know that, huh?

When you get bored standing there watching her network, go find other things to do at the con. (Also, if there are other things you already want to do, go do them and don't let your friend get in the way.) Make "dates" to meet up with her during the con, like at meal times, when she's less likely to be networking. Don't ask if she wants to do this - put it in more definite terms: "Let's meet up for dinner. Six o'clock would be a good time for me." Also, do some of your own "networking" - even if you don't need the cosplay connections, go ahead and chat up the other cosplayers and photogrpahers. You might make new friends and by asserting yourself in your friend's presence, she is less likely to take you for granted.

Feminist is the term for believing everyone in the world is equal? Really? I'm sure the LGBT right activists would like to be called feminists.

I think these people would say it signs you up for more than one social justice movement.

But that's always struck me as pretty bizarre. Basically it means anyone sitting around going "Boy, a more equitable world would be awesome!" is a member of a whole slew of movements.

I'd much rather people reserve the term for those people who actually do shit. But this would probably offend people who think making a couple comments on a messageboard/community makes them a change maker.

Personally I think it's a very rare and special person who can really devote herself to more than one movement and do the work. Because heaven knows we have a long, long way to go.

Sissy fight? Huh?

And who is this?

Re: About the het vs. slash vs. femmeslash vs. gen thing

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I get having preferences. What I don't get is why some people feel the need to argue over their preferences, as if liking a certain type of fanfic makes them somehow enlightened or superior. Like, the sort of person who'll accuse you of being a patriarchy-loving misogynist if you don't read femmeslash. Or the ones who complain about how "There's not enough slash/het/gen/etc. in my fandom!", and then they get all pissy and self-righteous when someone suggests "Well, why don't you just write your own?"

These same people will often turn around and say "Shipping wars are stupid! You'd never see me in a shipping war!" That's what I find hypocritical about it.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
There are assholes and extremists in every single group. They are not all of the group.

if that's what being a feminist is about

Except it's not? Lots of people would have you believe that being a good Christian means hating certain groups of people. Except it isn't.

welp

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the "welp" anon from yesterday, and I just wanted to tell everyone here that your concern and advice really did help. I got through the night fine. I still miss my friend, and I can't stop replaying those words in my head and it hurts, hearing that girl who was always so sweet and wonderful saying something so cruel to me. It hurts so much, and to be honest, I still kind of want to die. My mood is slipping all over the place, and I'm scared. but ughh the main point of this comment was to say thanks for all the kindness and concern
