Fandoms popping up overnight

Is it just me or are fandoms springing up much more quickly these days? Like, did this happen with LotR back in 2000 or whenever FotR was released?

i was listening to the presidential debate when i realized how much i like Romney's voice, it's a shame everything that he says with it is garbage.

I'm not a huge death metal fan (although I like other types of metal) but I TOTALLY think you should go for it! I love it when a band does something 'unexpected" like using a singer you wouldn't normally expect for a certain genre, and you sound like you've got a real passion for it and know what you're doing. I'm rooting for you, OP!

Agreed. It's fine if the character can't tell if it's someone they know in certain situations, but if there's no reason to not use their proper names instead of descriptors, it's annoying. I refuse to read fics that read like this secret's example, and unless I'm careless, I refuse to rec them.

This is why translating stories from Japanese is the worst. Apparently that is an actual accepted thing you can do, so they do it ALL the time. Especially when it's a short story in which the author has not provided names for any of the characters (which is pretty much all I've dealt with).

I think you're never too old to meet new people and find a place you "fit." :) Although I know what you mean, it's only recently that I found a group of friends that I always hang out with and do things with, so it was a relief when I found them!

What makes me sick in some American fanfics is the author calling characters by their names, if in canon their surnames are being used. Like calling ACD's Holmes "Sherlock" (even making Watson call him that), or, say, calling Hastings "Arthur", or Poirot "Hercule" for that matter. It's just outright creepy.

When it comes to younger/older, shorter/taller, the differences are usually not even that big. It would be like calling my friend "the older one" because she's 3 entire days older than me. Or the shorter one because of one centimeter. But of course, in the world of yaoi fic, characters shrink, grow and age inexplicably.

I was feeling that way until I found the Marvel/Avengers fandom. They are fun and welcoming (especially the Darcy Lewis fans, she's the sidekick of the love interest on Thor). I am having so much fun with it, more than I have since the Buffy and Harry Potter fandoms of old.

It's not only Brits. There's an American fandom I read and write fanfic in. There's an Aussie writer in my fandom that equips the American characters with "torches." Sigh.

all the 'friends' I've made on friending memes never actually talked to me. I ended up feeling really awkward and removing them after making a few feeble attempts...so yeah, I don't do them anymore.
