I just watch it. I came into it after the first season was done, knowing nothing about it other than it existed, and I don't give a fuck about its fic. Where do I fit in your hypothetical?

I definitely had expectations from all the Tumblr gifs. And the show is nothing like fandom wants to believe it is. And yeah, it is an awful show, but I love it anyway. I mean it's cringeworthy awful in a lot of parts, but it's still fun.

Basically I just take the approach that fandom and the show are two different things and I enjoy them separately. Sometimes I get frustrated that there's hardly any fic that is in character and deals with canon, but eh.

I know. I've decided to look at the fic as a completely separate universe, like the different Sherlock series. As long as it's written well, I don't bother comparing it with canon anymore.

I don't know why I didn't notice the first time I watched it, how bad the acting is.

Like, I tried rewatching it, and made it to episode four before I went "fuck this" and watched Downton Abbey instead.

It's just LAUGHABLE at how bad they are. Which is sad when you consider that Daniel Sharman is a classically trained actor. /shrug

It's really noticeable the change by the end of second season. Still not the best acting, but years beyond the first season.

I certainly was expecting something better, and was disappointed by all the contradictions and ignored plot lines. It's MTV, so I knew that it would be their usual teenage drama, but I hoped that there would be a more coherent plot. And it would help if they'd hire actors based on their acting skills and not their good looks.

At this point the only thing that would get me to watch the next season would be Peter taking a good hard look at his plans, and this time being a bit more careful and killing everyone under the age of thirty. Then Argent and the Sheriff would spend the rest of the series trying to catch Peter as he travels through the US biting people and gathering a new and more competent pack.

Hah, I watched it because I was curious about the Sterek. And I kept waiting for it to happen. And it never happened. Seriously, where is the Sterek?! I don't see it. I kind of like the rest of the show though, even though it is really, really bad.

Really? Because I got into the show precisely because of how bad I was told it was. My Wednesday nights are spent ripping each scene a new one with my best friend and that includes "Sterek" scenes. I swear, the moment Stiles dropped Derek in the pool scene was the funniest freaking thing ever. I laughed so hard.

That said, I still like the show and think it has some merits. Generally, I like it because of its potential and for some of the nice one-liners. Some of the best scenes don't have Stiles or Derek in it.

And before you write me off as, "Well you're level-headed because you don't ship Sterek." Ummmm... I ship everything in that show. Unless it's with Peter or Gerard. They can go die cold and alone with blue balls. But generally? No, I can ship so it's not that.

I think a lot of people recognize Teen Wolf isn't a masterpiece. They may not rip into it like I do but that can definitely acknowledge that it's not perfection. The thing is? They like it despite that.

And, hello, shippers? They obsess about their ship. No freaking duh! This happens in every fandom. I don't know why you expect Teen Wolf to be any different.

So, yeah, the problem with your fandom? It's not the "new people expecting a different show" or "idiots who don't recognize how bad/good it is." The problem with your fandom is that it's a fandom. It's unstable and weird and uncontrollable by design. It also doesn't help that the show targets a younger audience and really plays up the fanservice. Don't blame the fandom for being the precise thing the show was meant to bring in.

So I don't know man, what were you hoping for?

Yeah, after watching the show I was pretty surprised that Sterek was the fandom ship and the lack in anything else. Everyone in that show is so shippable. It's ridiculous. And sad that fandom doesn't work with that.

I agree about the quality of the show and actual Sterek support - I was expecting a LOT more, based on how popular the pairing is.

However, I think there's a decent-sized group of fans (myself included) who ship Sterek, but not in a canon-compliant way. Like, we don't think there's actually all that much supporting material in canon for it, but the fic out there paints such a vivid, wonderful picture, we get sucked in. :-/

I watch the show the same way I do for any other guilty pleasure show, I KNOW it's ridiculous, but I tune in anyway. That I make sure I'm not exactly 100 percent sober every time I watch "Teen Wolf", well... that might have something to do with it too. Yes, it is better when taken in slightly inebriated.

Teen Wolf is a horror-comedy in the same line of An American Werewolf in London, Shaun of the Dead and Drag Me to Hell.

I have a theory that the fans who make fandom related fic and art that is completely out of character with TW, such as Sterek, aren't fans of horror-comedy. They watch TW for other reasons that the writers of the show, who are fans of horror-comedy, are aiming for. (Those fans like the cute guys and shipping potential, for example.) So, not being fans and not familiar with the genre, they aren't going to write and create things that are in tune with the show.

So, I ask you, out of pure curiosity, if you are a fan of Teen Wolf, are you a fan of horror-comedy as well? If not, for what reasons do you watch Teen Wolf?

I'm anon above who started watching out of curiosity about the Sterek and never saw it, but did enjoy the show. I do like those kinds of horror comedy films, and I think I do like it because it's bad!

lol i've seen people say they have never watched the show or only watch sterek cuts but they are involved in fandom. and i've seen so many people admit they thought stiles was the main character or didn't even know scott existed. so basically, i agree.

the writing is flawed as shit but i think there is so much potential, so many interesting characters and aspects. and they get shafted :(

There are still a number of people who don't care much about sterek and still enjoy the show. It may not be the best show ever, but its certainly not the worst.
It keeps you interested and entertained even while there are a few plotholes.

Its sad because if it wasn't so popular, i don't think it would get any amount of the hate it gets. Its a teen show about werewolves on MTV. What do you expect.

I've watched the show since the first episode aired and only now after season 2 has ended started reading fic. I know it's a silly MTV program... that's why I love it ♥

However, I have to say if I went by tumblr, I'd think the show was Sterek 24/7, not Stiles and Derek interacting once every few episodes for 30 seconds. I can see the discrepancy.

I watched the show expecting a mashup of:
TVD + lots of werewolves everywhere everyone is a wolf stiles is a wolf right? who is stiles anyways is he a main character? + MTV quality control^tm
Like, I was expecting to watch one episode just so I could laugh at it, and then drop it.

That it was a campy horror comedy was a unexpectedly awesome surprise. It might be bad, yes, but it's a fun show to watch.
I know a lot of the meta and fic is super ooc, but just scroll on by and let folk have their fun :(

I watched from episode one because I remembered the movie, which is silly and fun. The show is fun too and it sounds like you're expecting it to be something it never was.

I ship Sterek because despite their limited screen time I can see the chemistry. A lot of people don't but it doesn't bother me and it shouldn't bother you. I also ship Stiles with about four other people.

Is it weird that the fandom has so many people that have never seen the source material? Yes and I don't get it. Is there a ton of ooc fic because of that? Yes but some of it is well-plotted and enjoyable anyway.

It's not a perfect show or fandom but I still love it. Nothing wrong with that.

Just because I've seen it a lot on the comments, I just wanna note that I didn't intend to bash Sterek. I don't really care about that, a lot of people do only focus on it, But I don't hate Sterek.

I don't hate the ship itself, nor do I hate the fic, etc that it generates. What I meant is that it's just ridiculous, that for all these people claiming they like this show so much, you don't actually see many(on LJ it's a lot more than other places) people that actually... comprehend the story line or give two shits about any other characters. And it's not even a difficult story line!
I guess I am just used to fandoms that, even though there are tons of shippers for a Big Ship, they still actually care about the canon and the other characters. The concept of being involved in a fandom where you've never even exposed yourself to the source material is just so foreign to me. And that it is such a HUGE portion of the fandom that is this way.

I started watching before Sterek was a thing, and I know I shouldn't let it get to me, but the Sterek part of fandom really annoys me to the point where I find it difficult just to enjoy the show now.

If you people actually *watched* the show before forming an opinion of OMG they're totes in luv, you'd know there isn't really anything in canon to support your ship.

Yeah, I saw Tumblr Stereking all over the shop, then read some fic, thought I'd better watch the show. Found the show pretty boring, the Sterek scenes non-exitant, but decided I really enjoy the fic. Lukily theres *alot* of fic

TL:DR - I mostly ignore the show, I'm here for the Sterek fic.
