There's this Russian book that has a quasi-medieval setting and contains a graphic description of how the main hero was trying to have sex with one of the female characters and ended up too grossed out to do it because she hadn't washed for, like, a month and because there were bed bugs in her room. As a matter of fact, he nearly threw up (he was from the future and not exactly accustomed to this sort of thing).

Ever since then I can't help but feel that in some settings unshaved legs would barely constitute the tip of the iceberg.

Things like this is all I can imagine in Hobbit fics (or whatever your medieval style fandom is). Like Aragorn wears the same clothes for weeks while running around in the woods and not bathing. He would be so rank and gross. That is one of the places I am completely okay with fics not being exactly realistic.

Though I think that never shaved female legs wouldn't generally be as in-the-jungle-the-mighty-jungle as we might think.

I'm all for more positive descriptions of body hair. Ladies in ASOIAF aren't supposed to shave, for example, yet we never get any indication that any of the beautiful female characters (Sansa, Arianne, Catelyn, Daenerys, etc.) have leg/arm/armpit hair. Hair is only described to make fun of ~ridiculous homely women~, even though the women should all have some hair:

“Be careful you don't cut yourself. The edges are sharp enough to shave with.'
'Girls don't shave', Arya said.
'Maybe they should. Have you ever seen the septa's legs?”
She giggled at him.

That last one is particularly ridiculous because Val lived in the North all her life and beyond the Wall for a couple of years and should naturally be less concerned about body hair and shaving than Selyse. The implication here is that the naturally gorgeous Val naturally has less pubic hair than that freak of nature Selyse does on her face. I get the sense that GRRM is picturing all of the hot women of ASOIAF as naturally hairless (except for between their legs because he takes care describing their ~mounds) and it really grosses me out.

*I say usually because for some random reason this past winter I decided to start shaving my legs. I'm about at the end of that rope because fuck that's annoying. I think I'll continue to the end of the summer then stop again. Forever.

As a point of interest:

Now I don't remember the specifics of ASOIF, but for Medieval themes, shaving as a practice was brought back from the Crusades to Europe. One account tells of a knight who not only shaved his legs, he shaved his vigorous thatch, and insisted his wife do the same. It may or may not have been a common practice, but it probably happened more than assumed.

Whenever I write fic in a medieval world where no one would shave their legs, I take great pleasure in describing that the women do have hairy legs and that they and their sexual partners like it.

While the sentiment is appreciated...why the hell would their partners care? That's like them noting how hairy the woman's forearms are or how unpainted their nails are--it's not only the norm, there is NO alternative, so why would they even notice that that is anything to 'like'? I mean I guess some people might notice general hairyness and like that, but...buh?

I would backspace out of your fic just because that smacks of bad writing and evangelizing in a context where it's out of place to do so.

I appreciate your realism, but... wouldn't that be kind of weird? Everybody had leg hair back then, so unless there was something unusual about it, it'd just be another mundane thing. Commenting on it would sort of be like, "Hey girl, I love how you've got those two shell-like appendages growing out of the sides of your head, 'cause that's way hot", etc.

You know what this makes me think of? Hobbit (the race) fanart where they are depicted with a lonely puff of fluff on their feet and bare legs.

I have only seen one piece of fanart that depicts Bilbo with hair going continuously from his foot right up his leg. By my logic, that should be how Hobbit hair should work, with foot hair being an extension of leg hair.

And this crosses both genders, since all hobbits have foot hair, and being country folk, I don't expect they shave their legs.
