I actually have a good friend whose a trans* man and who occasionally says (jokingly) "I hate trans* people." Only it's mostly because of his trans* friends doing stupid things and having a self deprecating and somewhat offensive sense of humor.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure I understand what you mean, OP. There is no right or wrong way to be trans. And what misinformation are you talking about? As a trans person who's on tumblr a lot, I've never seen anyone trivialise trans people or issues and your secret makes no sense to me.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
i assumed it was fandom-related... like they're insisting characters that aren't trans ARE trans which would be fine if they weren't, like... almost making light of it and fetishizing it in the process? i can totally understand why some transfolk wouldn't be pleased with this

Anyone else feel like the bit about headcanons was tacked on as an afterthought just to keep this out of the failbar?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, this is definintely about insisting "characters" as "canon" trans (or being trans what canon says, because the character's creator is too cissexist to realize the crossdressing male character they wrote is "really" a trans woman), making it very much fandom related.

[personal profile] scrubber 2013-11-12 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I sort of agree, because they are usually so... precious about it? I'm cool with people doing whatever with characters if it makes them feel included and happy, seriously more power to you. I truly mean that. If there's a character who I could viably interpret as genderqueer I am all over it. But don't pretend. Don't pretend it's a valid interpretation of canon (it rarely is), don't pretend you are totally thinking outside the box by making a (example) masculine female character into a transman, and REALLY don't pretend you are totally changing the world with your little blog on Tumblr. Until you make and distribute a story with the characters you want, all you're really doing is promoting the media you claim to be flawed with your fanwork so good job I guess?

But hey, Tumblr is self-congratulatory for no apparent reason, news at 11.

PS. Stop being so surprised when Japan doesn't have trans characters in their stuff. They're not going to get with the program for a while. If it were up to me it wouldn't be this way, but hey, what is my American ass supposed to do. The manufactured indignation is getting super old. Japan doesn't have a liberal American view on gender. Shocking. Crazy.

(This should go without saying, but I'm not actually defending Japan.)

The funny part is there are actually a number of legit well written trans characters in anime/manga. Mostly transwomen, but still.

The wank about Hanji from SNK was unbelievable tho

Basically the author went "You're asking about Hanji's gender? If it's that hard for you to tell I guess I won't even confirm it now lol" and somehow everybody took that to mean Hanji is trans/genderqueer/etc and proceeded to throw a shitfit whenever anyone in fandom referred to her with female pronouns.

Jesus christ what's the point of celebrating "representation" when there's no proof of it being canon whatsoever

i don't wish all trans communities on tumblr would vanish. there are a lot of good trans blogs on there too. it's just that those blogs (the ones i follow anyway) tend to focus more on live action trans photography and porn and aren't at all connected to fandom. but yes, i wish the fandom teenybopper baby trans kids would at least stop clogging up tags with their pointless fantasy trans headcanons. </another trans fan>

Oh, Tumblr.

The other day I ran across a how-to-pass guide written by a trans man, and Tumblr was jumping down his throat with accusations of misogyny because the guide was basically "how not to look like a lesbian". because, according to Tumblr, not wanting to be mistaken for something you are not is sexist.
I don't want to be called ma'am every time I leave the house, this isn't because I hate women, but because I am not myself a woman.
I'd like to see some of these so-called allies be afflicted with constant misgendering for just one day, maybe then they'd see that it isn't a game, or a trend, or internalized sexism, or whatever they want to pretend it is, it's an unfortunate thing that some of us have to deal with every bloody day of our lives, and if we can find a guide that gives us advice on how to not be mistaken for women, that's a good thing, not a woman-hating thing.

Yeah, umm, I wasn't going to out myself with this account. That didn't last long.

tv/movie recs with well-handled trans characters?

[personal profile] gondremark 2013-11-12 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
Ideally, I want a show or movie that has well-developed, realistic, and believable characters, at least one of whom happens to be trans. Everything I've seen so far has trans characters as jokes or as part of a Very Special Message, not as people.

There's Hit & Miss, which handles things better than most, portraying trans-ness as an important facet of a character instead of as a joke, and is more about the character doing things than the character being trans, and she's portrayed as a woman, instead of as a man in a dress. I'm telling myself there has got to be another show like this, but that's the only one I've come across.

I'm hoping this is because I haven't looked hard enough, not because such shows don't exist.

I just generally scroll and nope past the "omg X is so ftm/mtf because bullshit reasons lol". It turns trans identities into fucking quirks like freckles.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
What I hate the most is when some of those ill-informed wannabe SJWs on tumblr treat trans issues like the new and improved version of genderbending. Suddenly, a canon gay character isn't good and SJ enough anymore, he needs to be trans as well. Oh hey, let's say he's actually MtF trans! Look, the canon gay character who is interested in a guy turns into girl being interested in boy! How great!

Yeah, fuck you.

Another trans dude and I half-agree - it'd be nice if some good fic cam out of it! Progress! Everyone wants to be represented (WELL!) in the media, so why the hell not the trans crowd. But...

You can't have nice things on the internet.

Few months ago, I found a new thing and via Tumblr I had read that there's a trans character there! In popular sci-fi! Marvellous! Didn't know that it had been a headcanon at the time - one I REALLY misinterpreted. There was this really kick ass woman in there, one of the mains and my brain concluded that it must be her - go rad trans woman character, yeah! Yup, fandom made her into a trans dude, because she had "masculine" traits. They even wrote this one fic where they paired her (as a man with a guy and labled it het (on AO3) - gave up on the fandom then.

The worst trans headcanon EVER? Belle from Beauty and the Beast. Yup. It's there.
