My husband doesn't like seeing movies with our kid because he thinks she can't sit still to watch the movie. (She's 7 now, and does much better than when she was 3-4, the last time he saw a movie with her.) So he goes with his brother to the Disney/Pixar movies they want to see. Or if we all go, she and I sit on the end. Don't feel bad for not wanting to see it with a kid, basically is what I'm saying. Even parents don't always want to.

That being said, I'll be on maternity leave when the new X-Men movie comes out, baby due basically that week, so it's quite possible I'll be taking my infant to an early morning show during the week when I hope there won't be many people there, adults or otherwise. My daughter slept through Ghost Rider, I'm hoping her brother will be kind enough to do that for a movie I actually want to see. I'll be sad if I have to leave because of a cranky baby, but I could get lucky and have the theater to myself, which has happened on occasion in a first thing in the morning show on a weekday.

I don't want to be a dick, but, why would you take a baby to a movie theater?

You know you might ruin the movie for some others (including yourself). Why not get a babysitter for just a few hours or have the grandparents spend time with the baby while you go see the film.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Not who you're replying to, but I don't know of any babysitters suitable for a young baby (no, really, even qualified), and the grandparents are out of state. Believe me, and I've only gone to the movies if I'm desperate to see something and there's no other option, if the baby cries, I am out of the theatre at lightning speed.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
If your desperation to see a frickin movie overrides your good sense as a parent I see you as at best, needing guidance and at worst, a self-centered asshole.

Unless she's formula feeding, there is no way a mother can be parted from her newborn for very long, and even then it's damaging to both. Also, immediately after birth is when a lot of hormone-fueled animal instinct kicks in and you just don't want to be away from the baby in case you have to defend it from predators.

But honestly, I think you should pirate, OP. You'll have just made a human being, take a small indulgence.

...FOR TWO HOURS?

YOU BELIEVE IT WILL BE DAMAGING FOR THE BABY TO BE SEPARATED FROM THE MOTHER FOR THE LENGTH OF AN X-MEN MOVIE?

ARE YOU A BIOLOGIST FROM ANOTHER PLANET

Unless she is suddenly in the "Universe of the Four Gods" from Fushigi Yuugi where an hour in our world is several weeks in the FY-verse, it won't be damaging to the baby, believe me.

There's nothing wrong with taking a baby to a theater.

The problem is when your baby starts fussing and you refuse to leave the theater with him/her.

Sounds like ayrt is considerate and wouldn't make other people sit through the movie with a crying baby. (Or if she has the theater to herself, it won't matter that much.)

I came here to ask this too. I get really wanting to see a movie even though you have an infant, but other people want to see the movie just as badly and if the baby starts crying at a pivotal moment it might break the tension or make important dialogue inaudible for her and at possibly everyone close to her and ruin the movie experience for all involved.

A sitter of some sort just makes more sense than going to the theater with a newborn. Sure, some people say their baby will sleep through the movie and even has before, but that's no guarantee that another baby will or even that those babies would do it more than once.

It just seems more courteous to the other people who paid to see the movie too, and there's no chance the mother would end up having to pay for a ticket then have the money wasted by having to leave half-way through. Plus, I imagine it would be more relaxing and enjoyable to not have to be constantly alert to the baby.

Agreed -- wouldn't the loudness of the theater be damaging to baby's ears? :\

"In fact, movies are very loud and that might be one of the strongest reasons to not bring a young child. The decibel levels at theaters vary greatly, but the Center for Hearing and Communication warns that theaters often have the volume turned up well beyond 90 decibels. And that's too loud for anyone, but it's especially dangerous for young children whose ears are still developing."

I took my baby to see Thor: TDW at a "crybaby" session. It was great, the front carpet bit under the screen had babies crawling all over it. I did the nappy change on a seat up the back. And lots of breastfeeding. Does your cinema have anything like that? If not, yeah, quiet cinema times are good.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
"I did the nappy change on a seat up the back".

Ew, why would you do that? Seriously, I find that really disrespectful to the people who will have to use those seats after you.

Don't take your baby to a movie. Get your husband to watch the kid(s) while you go with a friend.

I go to early morning weekday showings because they're cheap. They're also usually packed because they're cheap.

NO ONE wants to suffer through a movie with a crying child any more than they want to suffer through someone texting or talking during a movie.

Please don't take an infant to a movie. Your baby's health must come first, and exposing a newborn to loud noises for 90 minutes can be incredibly damaging. Wait a couple weeks until you can find someone to watch him/her, or just wait until it comes out on DVD.

After reading this thread I stand corrected about newborns and loud sounds. (I don't have any kids and am years away from wanting to have any, so I don't know much about newborns v. other babies.) Definitely agreeing with this.

Please reconsider. That has the potential to harm your child. I get wanting to see a movie, but there are DVDs and RedBox for that and then you're not overstimulating or damaging his hearing.
