I can get down with that. I'm not for having children shriek or question what's going on - at least while I'm there.

I try to go in the morning or the middle of the day, but half of the time I see a child there anyway, like do these kids go to school at any time?

Although children didn't say a damn thing when I saw ParaNorman.

There's always kids too young for school or kid's being homeschooled. Or it's a school holiday. My kid gets Valentine's day off for some reason this year.

That's not a child! The shriek is me, thequestioning is my dad!

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Well, no one likes an ill-behaved child in the theater, but also no one likes some asshole leaving their phone on and answering calls loudly. Whether with or without kids there's a chance the audience will be unpleasant; but at least kids tend to be less jaded. I enjoy having some kids in the audience because they will laugh at the funny parts and gasp and the scary parts and get way into it, which I really enjoy. I DO think not wanting to go WITH kids, aka with kids in your party that you're responsible for, is different, since there's a level of responsibility there you might not want when you just want to see a movie.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this--does the OP think adults somehow are magically innocent of obnoxious, disruptive behavior in movies?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't like seeing a movie with a lot of people whoever they are. The most disruptive people I've ever been in a movie with were three old ladies watching Iron Man 3. They loudly told each other who was on screen, spilled hot coffee on my neck and down the back of my shirt, then got bored and started loudly talking about their grandkids and where they were going to have lunch. I shushed them several times, openly asked them to be quiet twice, and fortunately the people in front of me left the showing halfway through after their phone rang so I could move.

Give me an over-excited kid any day.

You can have the asshole with the phone removed.

If it's a noisy kid, then you're just told to Deal With It, because it's a Kid's Movie. I have actually experienced this, and I'm not above tattling on someone having a phone out of worry.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in a similar situation. I work with kids everyday and I don't like them....

I mean. In work it's fine. I enjoy herding around the munchkins and doing other classroom activities. But outside of work? I'll find 5 min to fawn over your little bundle of joy and then you better take it back. I love "kid" movies, too. But. Can't tell anyone, though. A lot of my co-workers have kids and I get asked constantly when I'm going to start having 'em. I don't want them.

I feel you. I actually used to tutor kids with learning disabilities and other issues.I'm good with them, but if anything, it made me realize I'm glad I don't have to take them home.

This doesn't sound like you dislike children, it sounds like you just interact with a lot of children for your job and it's understandably tiring. But taking a job dealing strongly with children when you dislike them? That sounds like you'd only be hurting yourself and them (because kids know when an adult dislikes them).

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
My husband doesn't like seeing movies with our kid because he thinks she can't sit still to watch the movie. (She's 7 now, and does much better than when she was 3-4, the last time he saw a movie with her.) So he goes with his brother to the Disney/Pixar movies they want to see. Or if we all go, she and I sit on the end. Don't feel bad for not wanting to see it with a kid, basically is what I'm saying. Even parents don't always want to.

That being said, I'll be on maternity leave when the new X-Men movie comes out, baby due basically that week, so it's quite possible I'll be taking my infant to an early morning show during the week when I hope there won't be many people there, adults or otherwise. My daughter slept through Ghost Rider, I'm hoping her brother will be kind enough to do that for a movie I actually want to see. I'll be sad if I have to leave because of a cranky baby, but I could get lucky and have the theater to myself, which has happened on occasion in a first thing in the morning show on a weekday.

That's fair enough. Kids can be annoying, and having a friend's kid there would really interrupt your experience if you're not into mediating *their* experience.

I have a small kid, and hate Disney and young kids' stuff in general, so I'm not looking forward to all that when they grow a bit older. Perhaps we can avoid Disney.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I think there are theaters that just sort of become "that theater where grown-ups watch kids movies". We have a local one that, I shit you not, had a completely packed room for Up, and I counted at most two children. Good place to be, it's just a shame it doesn't tend to pick up much kids movies.

I prefer to sit at the bar at restaurants, or just go to a 21+ establishment, for similar reasons.

Do I mind kids as a whole? Nah. But sometimes they're loud and I just want to enjoy my dinner and beer (or movie!) in peace.

I don't have much of an issue with kids, but I feel your pain at the thought of going to the theater WITH a small kid. Some kids can sit quiet and behave for the length of a movie, but it's depressing how many who CANNOT get taken to the movies anyway.
