Classism in fandom

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
We always hear a lot about racism, sexism, homophobia; but what about classism? Have you seen fellow fans express classist ideas in their interpretations and meta about a canon, or show classism in their opinion of a character?

Agreed. I wouldn't say the Weasleys are my favorite characters, but a lot of the criticisms of them sound really classist (like them not being able to afford new things for Ron is a character flaw or even criticism of them having 7 kids).

Harry Potter is also the main fandom where I have noticed it. It has wierd amounts of fetishism for the Malfoys upperclassnes as well

Which is missing the point on so many levels, considering they're basically JKR's middle finger to Maggie Thatcher...

I've noticed (in a lot of fandoms) that there are lots of AUs that romanticise the hell out of poverty and homelessness, which by its nature comes from a privileged (I know that's a dirty SJW word around here, but it applies), middle-class point of view. As someone that lived for several years on the very edge of homelessness, it pisses me off to no end.

I love reading about financial struggles. And I'm well off. So, sorry I'm one of that people who likes romanticizing such things. In my defense I give to local homeless charities. And I get the difference between reality and writing.

I agree. Once I read a Sherlock fic where a Mary Sue OC was homeless. It was supposed to make her look tough and badass, but it only made it all the more obvious that the author was a white middle-class teenager.

Tbh I was guilty of that when I was a kid. I blame Mark Twain.

ETA: and the curious thing is that our family wasn't really well off. But we were never destitute or even very poor, either.

It goes both ways on the spectrum, really. I notice AUs that romanticize being a CEO, too, and assume ~rich CEOs~ constantly have money at their fingertips to do whatever they want with and never actually do any work, much less devote a majority of their lives to running a business which 50+ other people's entire livelihoods depend on, which could all collapse at once and wreck everybody if they make the wrong business decisions. No, all rich people have stress-free, wonderful lives. Blech.

I don't mean to say that being rich is harder than being poor, just pointing out the very narrow middle-ish-class perspective that most of these things get written from. It's inaccurately romanticizing both ends. :\

I immediately thought of the Derelicte fashion collection in Zoolander, based on the clothes of homeless people. And then finding out this part in the movie was based on a real fashion show.

The distasteful romanticising doesn't only happen in fandom.

Classism can be particularly tricky because of how much class is often correlated with education.

That insidious tide of Rose Tyler haters in Doctor Who. It infuriated me so much I wound up retroactively liking her 100X more than I liked her the first time I watched the show (I never hated her, but I didn't love her either) just out of defiance of them. There was one person who was listing Rose and Martha's comparative qualities to see who was a better person, and literally said that Martha being higher-class than Rose was reasonable to include as something that made her a better person. And I distinctly remember someone once asking "why would a Time Lord spare a thought for a council-house chav?" DO YOU EVEN UNDERSTAND WHAT SHOW YOU ARE WATCHING YOU DUMB-FUCKS.

All of the fandoms where I hear about prejudice against lower-class folks are British. Americans seem to have more of a thing against upper-class folks or folks with upper-class aspirations.

So many "happily ever after" stories involve the characters getting randomly rich and never having to lower themselves to interact with poor people again the way they did in canon.

A lot of Sherlock Holmes fic is quite open about portraying wealthy clients' problems more important than poor ones'.

Sherlock is 500 times worse than Sherlock Holmes, which is vaguely hilarious given that Sherlock Holmes was set in the uber-classist Victorian era.

So many AUs turning the characters into nobility or movie stars so they can have glamorous Downton Abbey upstairs angst instead of normal-person angst. And when it's "A is a duke. B is a prostitute. They fall in love." it's usually soooooooo patronizing.

I can't even list the amount of judgey "poor people should act like this, otherwise they're scum" leveled at the Weasleys.

When one half of an OTP is lower-class or uneducated, having them constantly worship and fall all over themselves consoling the higher-class or educated half with their manpain (even if the higher-class one is a woman -- women can have manpain too): Ron and Hermione, Starsky and Hutch, Tony and Steve, Batman and Nightwing...

A lot of this, especially in fic, is actually often very subtle and insidious, not overt, which is way worse than overt classism. Sometimes not even recognizable as such unless you read enough fic to start to pick up on odd patterns. Especially gross when comparing the various Doctor Who companions.

One of the reasons I love the Lewis and Inspector Morse fandoms is because both the canons and the fic are wonderfully non-classist.

Generally, I'm very thankful my fandoms are all progressive in these regards. I haven't had to deal with any of the above.

IDK probably haven't noticed 'cause classism pisses me the fuck off.

Although yesterday as I was shopping on the sims I thought about how the internal economy is fucked up - I mean I can buy a house for $15k and a single egg for $600? 25 eggs = the price of a 1br house??

I got really upset over it for a couple of minutes u_u;

Shameless US fandom is awful, the amount of people who just don't understand how it is to actually live a life like they do in the show. Which means they make a huge deal out of things than in a life similar to that wouldn't be made a deal out of and they ignore the actual real problems they have.

For example one of the characters might or might not be Bipolar and the fandom is so angry at his family for not noticing that something is wrong with him. Ignoring the fact that the only person in the household that can earn enough money lost her job and the issue of how to pay for rent/utilities and food is a lot higher on the list of priorities than anything else. And that is just the top of the iceberg of things that they have to deal with so no there is sadly no time or energy left to notice that one of them might be struggling. Living a life like that means you handle the crisis first, everything else fades into the background and no that does not mean they don't care about their brother, it just means that life sucks and you have to deal the best you can.

I have a lot of feelings about Shameless US fandom, mostly because the life they live on the show is a televised version of my life

Not so much about characters, but about the other fans. Especially other anons, or if they're trying to tear down someone they know is of a "minority" group.

Re: Classism in fandom

I haven't actually seen it directed at fictional characters, but when a con moved and people were sad that it wasn't near them anymore, there was a lot of "just suck it up and put aside money for plane tickets if you want to go! Are you a real fan or not?!" It infuriated me because not everyone can afford plane tickets even if they save all year. Some people really truly can't travel far for a con, no matter how fun it may be or how many friends might be there or how much of a True Fan of the franchise they are. And here these other people were complaining that there are so many "whiners" who should just shut up about not being able to go because it's irritating to see. Ugh.
