Re: Sexuality v. Sexual Orientation

Why do people still think demisexual has anything to do with who you actually want to have sex with when it has been clarified over and over that it's about who you feel attracted to, not what you want to do with them?

-not a demisexual

Re: Sexuality v. Sexual Orientation

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
No it doesn't? Demisexuals are only want to fuck people they know (you know like the majority of the population). It doesn't define what type they are attracted to.

honestly, demisexuality started as a joke on an RPG board by a teenager. And it just comes off as being very slut-shamey. "Oh we don't have sex unless we KNOW people. Not like you people who will just fuck any warm body you can find."

Re: Sexuality v. Sexual Orientation

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
If that's how you read it, then that's on you. Because the label isn't about YOU, and it takes a special kind of narcissism to act like it is.

Re: Sexuality v. Sexual Orientation

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Like I said, make up wahtever label you want for yourself. But don't act like you are oppressed or belong on the LBGT spectrum.

Re: Sexuality v. Sexual Orientation

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Oppressed? No. Lonely and side-eyed for not ogling "hot people"? Yes. And I think that's probably what a good portion of the people you say are crying about being oppressed are talking about, you just can't get your head out of your ass long enough to see it.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Who the hell gets lonely and side-eyed for not ogling 'hot people'

I am honestly curious about this experience that is apparently common where people are mocked for not enjoying hot bods or something

er

the whole point of demisexuality is that you don't experience sexual attraction towards someone unless you know them well. doesn't mean you want to fuck them. I'm straight but I don't want to fuck every guy I'm attracted to. (I can count the number of dudes I've actually actively wanted to sleep with on one finger)

Re: Sexuality v. Sexual Orientation

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
The whole point of demisexuality is that you're basically normal. Of course not everyone wants to have sex with everyone, even within their "preference." I don't really see anything queer about not being attracted to strangers, and taking a little bit of time to get to know someone before you really develop sexual feelings for them.

Re: Sexuality v. Sexual Orientation

[personal profile] diet_poison 2014-06-21 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I don't disagree with any of that, anon. I'm talking about something slightly different/more specific: the idea that being attracted to a group of people =/= wanting to fuck that group or someone in that group. Sexual attraction =/= actual desire to sleep with someone.

And in case my last bit was confusing to you - I didn't really think about it this way at the time but I can see how it could come across that way - I don't identify as demisexual at all, I'm just pointing out that the attraction I've experienced to men - quite a few, overall - rarely means I actually would like to sleep with them. Even if it's still sexual attraction.

tl;dr to clarify what I meant: even if you are self-identified as demisexual, you can still be attracted to someone and not want to sleep with them

Re: Sexuality v. Sexual Orientation

(Anonymous) 2014-06-23 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
No it isn't.

The whole idea of demisexuality is that you're essentially asexual until you stumble into a close relationship with someone compatible and you're suddenly like "Wait, what is going on? What are these feelings??" because you never experienced budding sexuality during puberty like most people do.

Re: Sexuality v. Sexual Orientation

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
I don't even know what you're trying to say.

That's normal. The vast majority of people feel exactly that way.

"Demisexuality" might as well be "standard human sexuality."

Re: Sexuality v. Sexual Orientation

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
So I'm a weirdo for being able to look at strangers or celebrities I've never met and think they're hot? Because I thought that was what was normal. I thought "standard human sexuality" involved sexual attraction being influenced by physical appearance. But I guess I'm the special snowflake now for finding people's appearances sexy whether or not I'm acquainted with them, huh?

The slut-shamey part has been my problem with many who say they are "demi" "omni" or "pan" sexual (which don't two of those mean 'attracted to non-human species? Which we really don't HAVE any sentient non-human species as of this point???).

Then again, the assholes I've known who claimed demi were....well, assholes. Maybe it's not that way for everyone, but it is hard for me to not roll my eyes when someone says "I only sleep with people I love! I'm only ATTRACTED to people I KNOW!", because THAT'S AN EXTREMELY, EXTREMELY COMMON human experience across ALL sexualities. So much that it doesn't seem like it needs its own "label".

Pansexual doesn't mean attracted to non-humans, though?

I think "pan"sexual means attracted to all genders, which includes transpeople and genderfluid people. I think. I've also heard pansexual used interchangeably with demisexual, which is confusing as well.

How are those people non-human tho??

Re: Sexuality v. Sexual Orientation

You hit the nail on the head. The biggest problems many people have with demisexuality are:

A) the slutshaming, which does unfortunately crop up in the asexual community

and

B) the tendency to claim "oppression" for being demisexual, which is no.

Re: Sexuality v. Sexual Orientation

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
I think omni- and pan- are used pretty interchangeably to include transmen and transwomen into their spectrum. Especially if the subject in question in pre-op. Because we can talk all we want about being the gender we say we are, that doesn't mean people attracted to that gender necessarily like bits belonging to the nonmatching sex.

Re: Sexuality v. Sexual Orientation

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
But doesn't bi already cover that? I mean, if you're attracted to men and women already, then I don't see how what particular parts they have would change anything.

Actually we have plenty of sentient non-human species. What we don't have is sapient non-human species.

I should go bitch about that in the word usage thread.
