Creepy nighttime noises

We have screech owls in the woods outside our home and they can make really creepy noises in the dead of night.

I get the skittery pitter patter of mice feet in my house. I prefer it when they are not in my bedroom.

Foxes screaming. Cats in heat. My AC turning on. For some reason the main pipe is in my closet, so every time it turns on there is a loud THUNK.

The last night I swore I heard the sound of something moving or felt something tap me.

I freaked out for a solid five minutes that an intruder had snuck in and would rob/assault me. Then I remembered we have a freaking German Shepard.

No more creepy pasta for me.

but you don't. Kind of the opposite of a weird turn-ons thread.

Mine:

- Muscles. It seems like someone pretty much decided that the definition of attractiveness for men was having big muscles... and it's a big turnoff for me. Especially if it's obvious that you've been spending hours in the gym (rather than getting some muscle from hard work, which at least looks a little bit more natural).

- I don't find giant lips too attractive. Like Angelina Jolie (otherwise pretty) or the Homestuck guy.

- Tans. I know I'm not the only one who dislikes fake orange tans, but natural ones only look good on some people to me, and I don't think I'm one of them, so I really dislike getting tanned in the summer (and no, dimwit trolls, I'm not talking about people who naturally have darker skin because of their race).

- Really angular faces on men.

The nuts in your family tree

I've been thinking lately about how much of the messed-up stuff in my stories comes from my extended family. All my immediate relatives are basically okay, but the distant relations are like a V.C. Andrews novel. What I'm wondering is, how does this compare to other folks? Is my family unusually nutty, or do you have similar relatives?

Some of the stuff is potentially triggery, so I'll give details in my second post, just in case.

The 1001 Nights

So I'm reading a translation of The 1001 Nights/The Arabian Nights I got used from a bookstore recently, mostly because I'm curious about the original stories behind Aladdin, Sinbad and Ali Baba, but also to maybe glean something about Arabic culture from a more direct source.

It wasn't unexpected from something so old that there's a lot of sexism, violence and racism, but I'm having trouble picking out any overall morals and values from the stories. The fairy-tales, myths and such that I've read from other cultures (mostly western) all tend to have a set of morals they espouse even when that isn't the immediate point of the story. Don't lie, don't cheat, don't steal, don't be a moocher, don't murder - horrible consequences if you do.

But in the Nights the heroes are doing all of those things and being rewarded and called virtuous, noble, ect. for it, but when the villain of the story does them it's shown as, well, villainous. From one story to the next, and sometimes within the same story, the exact same actions are considered villainous or heroic depending on if they're the protagonist.

Or the pretty girl he wants. In "Julnar the Mermaid and her Son" for example, the princess the king wants to marry turns him into a bird in a demonstrably malicious way when they first meet (something repeatedly shown as a villain behavior that wasn't forgiven in previous stories), but is excused and marries him at the end because he 'is still madly in love with her.' In fact, I've found the characters to be so simplistic and shallowly created and self-centered in their motivations that to me they're all horrible and unlikeable so far despite the overall story being very entertaining.

Being overall unfamiliar with the culture I feel like I must be missing or overlooking something, so I wonder if anyone here could shed some light, or just point me in the right direction to begin looking it up myself.

Madame Secretary (Sounds a little like The Good Wife crossed with The West Wing, both of which I like)
Gotham (Batman isn't my favorite, but I do like Ben McKenzie and the backstories might be interesting)
Scorpion (I wasn't going to watch this - while the concept was sort of interesting, it didn't really grab me, but the promos they've been showing have caught my attention)
Forever (Ioan Gruffudd as an immortal crime solver who dies and gets resurrected with some frequency - have to check that out)
Red Band Society (Octavia Spencer and dark humor plus the kid sister from Big Time Rush)
How to Get Away with Murder (Viola Davis and Shonda Rhimes, have to at least try it)
