Is this even legal? I mean, this person is directly profiting from someone else's IP, unless it's a fandom for something out of copyright.

Fanartists are paid for commissions all the time. Don't see why this would be different.

Uh, I don't really see this as different as commissioning art of your OTP or erotica or whatever. If you think it will make you happy and their quality of work is actually worth money, do.

Seems really crappy of them to do but as long as their writing is worth it to you and you have the money, why not?

Eh, people seem to forget that people pay for doujinshi all the time. And while most djka don't make a profit and are lucky to make back their printing costs, there are BNFs who make thousands of dollars off of it.

Making fic requests is so nice. Anon fests are forever. People who write for fests are the best and those who fill my requests are gods.

Hmm, I just don't see how anyone can make a substantial sum of money this way. Maybe it's just to weed out those readers who don't want it strongly enough? You'd have to really love a fic in order to pay for it, after all.

Anyway, OP, it's simply not enough for a Christmas present! Pick some insignificant holiday, like a Fireman's Day or whatever Google happens to celebrate at the time.

I have no problem with this.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Do it. If you're willing to pay for it and the writer is willing to take the commission, who cares what other people think?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
... this person's screenname isn't Thanfiction, and/or they don't go by "Andy", right?

Honestly, this sounds like a scam of some sort to me. Don't give into it. Art commissions are usually not made for updates - you want a certain fanart drawn, and it is. That's way different from this person saying he or she won't do anything until they are paid to do so.

Might be a little seedy, but as long as you're sure you'll actually get what you paid for, I think its worth it.

I'd certainly be tempted to commission someone to write for my OTP, just because it's absurdly obscure.

I understand the arguments for getting paid for fic/paying for fic, but the more popular this becomes, the more everyday fans are going to get pushed out by corporations and such. I know there's a lot of hate for "amateur" writing, but I enjoy it, and I will be said to see it go when more and more corporations go after folks for fanfics and such because they've developed a way to make a profit on it.

It's one thing to offer fic commissions, but it's another to hold chapters of a work for ransom.

I have no problem with people offering stories for money, but I do if it's a story that's already been started and then the author wants money for updates. That's kind of... Questionable.

But it's your money. Do what you want. I personally can't respect someone for holding their story ransom.

I really, really despise the trend of authors suddenly demanding paying for updates. It's like "I need x number of comments or I'll stop writing!!" but with actual money instead of validation from strangers on the internet. I don't necessarily think there's anything inherently wrong with fic commissions, but this is just tacky imo.

I don't mean to cast judgement on OP, though; if you enjoy the fic, it's your money to spend.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-10 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Is this a situation of:

a.) Only creating new work on a commission-based scale. All their current output is new stand-alone works featuring the pairings and preferences of the commissioner.

OR

b.) Refusing to update their own works in progress (begun before this new decision) without commissions for new chapters of those stories. The commissioner(s) now gets to dictate the direction of the existing WIP.
??

I feel like a. is fine (like commissioned fanart), and certainly a lot less confusing. The situation of b. just makes me scratch my head, really! Maybe it's just my distaste of posted WIPs where the future events aren't already decided, but what I described as b. really rubs me the wrong way.

I guess what I find objectionable about this situation is that it doesn't feel that far removed from extortion (e.g., secret #3), but then again, there are one or two writers who I'd toss a little bit of money at if they'd wrap up certain stories.

Still, "pay2fic" does feel different to me than commissioning a piece of fanart, becuse in general the artist draws what I specify. What grills my cheese in this secret is the "maybe have some influence over the focus of the chapter" thing that you're describing, OP, but again, that's just me.

(ETA: Letting different people pay for and steer the focus of each chapter feels almost CYOA-ish to me.)

Seems to me that, if you have the money for it, and would really like to do it, go for it. Why not?

Have fun and treat yourself.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-10 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
This. This is the shit that is going to get fan fiction shut down. It's one thing when it's just for fun, and you can say that no one is getting paid, therefore infringing on the original author/creator's way to make money off of their work. If people are paying for fanfiction, however, that thin protection goes away.

In one way, it's no different than buying fanart. Which I've done.

In another way, I'm side eyeing the hell out of that FF writer. Something about having to pay to force them to continue works they have already started, and only having minimal say in what happens. Maybe if it was an original fanfic for a person I'd think otherwise, but this... It sounds shady.

But as long as it makes you happy OP, and you are absolutely sure you can get what you want out of what you're going to pay, then go for it. I'd only caution that it would really suck if you got hooked and wanted more.

I've done this, $20 commission for a chapter. My impression was that the author was like, "Writing fic takes time that I COULD be using on actual money-making enterprises. Getting some money for it makes me feel less guilty about 'wasting my time' and alleviates some burden"

Thoroughly enjoyed the chapter (and the 50+ chapters before) as well as the drabble the author let me request. I've payed more for hardbacks I enjoyed less!

(Anonymous) 2014-11-10 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
It's your money, I don't see it as any different than scanlation groups having adds or a donate option, not to mention 3rd party reader sites.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-10 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm seeing an astounding amount of ignorance on this thread. Ignorance on how fic commissioning works, indicating nobody's bothered to ask an author why or how. The only one who sounds like they've done more than seen a single line at the end of a fic saying it was paid for...is the OP, who seems to want to be the one paying.

It sounds like everyone's waaaaahing because other people are willing to pay for what they're not, and they're getting the benefit of the commissioners' money. Are there any commissioners complaining?
