Most Interesting Historical Time Period

If you like reading or researching history, what's your favorite historical time period? What interests you about it?

Pre-civil war, abolitionist era, about 1830's-1850's.

It interests me because the United States was this one big powder keg, and every year brought with it more and more pressure. I like the heroic stories of basic fucking human decency, of the underground railroad and the people who made their homes into stations, of the abolitionists who put their safety and livelihoods on the line to promote the end of slavery, of people like Frederick Douglass who not only escaped slavery, but went on to publish his experiences first hand.

It's the best and worst of a nation all balled up into two decades, building and building until the ultimate outbreak of civil war.

The Romans had intrigue, the Civil War had drama, the Revolutionary War had us kicking out the British, ancient times had horrible diseases and human sacrifices. It's all so fantastic.

Second half of the 19th century, I guess, sort of fin de siecle and things around that. Maybe from the 1860s or so through to the start of WWI. I think what fascinates me is that it's this long period that's sort of in between things. Everything is kind of uneasy. On the one hand, everything seems peaceful, there's no major wars, there's tons of progress; on the other hand, there's all of these huge, massive changes going on under the surface and all of these almost invisible tensions the whole time. You have awful stuff going on and great advancement going on and all of it kind of just mashed together with no one having any idea what the future holds. And you have, I think, the advent of real globalization, where the world is being really knitted together, and all the changed out of that.

I think World War I marks a precipice, where everything changed in an almost unimaginable way, and to go back and try and trace the thoughts and the feelings and the worldviews of the people from the period before that is just fascinating. I don't know, I just love the art and the literature, I love the aesthetics, I love the culture, I love the history. It's just fascinating.

Runner-up time period would be the 17th century, because it's just fucking insane.

Classical to Late Antique Roman to Early Medieval Europe. Rome because they have the best emperors ever, Early Medieval for the intrigue into cultures that didn't have written records previously. Then Viking age, because all their shenanigans entertain me. Jumping over to Japan, anything from Heian to Edo period. I guess that's "medieval Japan" if you will.

I don't list modern or early modern history (for most countries). For the most part, the older the better. But the struggle is finding enough record of it.

I find that the older it is, the more interesting it is to me (with the caveat of cavemen -- interesting but not my first choice). I just like to imagine how different but still the same things are -- how people lived their daily lives. I really like how people tried to make sense of their world and how resourceful people were.

Some of my favorite time periods/places are medieval Europe, Roman/Greek ancient history, and early colonial America. I also like learning about people and the sea. Vikings, Age of Sails, ancient merchant ships -- just the ingenuity of people harnessing the ocean. And, I'm a sucker for ancient disasters too.

There are a lot of different periods in 16-19th century Europe that I am a sucker for, but if I had to choose one I would say the (little over) hundred year period between 1730-1850. Especially the French revolution if I had to narrow it down even more.

I love so much of the political thinking of this period, and the move from monarchy (both absolute and not) and the growth of democracies (or at least democratic thinking).

For the French revolution I love the desperation, the hope and the raw brutality behind a lot of it to mention some things. I could honestly go on and on about the French revolution all night, so I'll leave it short before I get started.

If I were to choose a lesser known period/conflict I love it would have to be the Hundred Years War.
